Oh damn, it's real magnets. And there I was, thinking it was some kind of optical illusion!
Oh DAMN, this thing comes from basically next door, (if it is really produced in Slovenia)
And OHHHH DAAAAAMN, this is fucking expensive, 2500€! And I thought the new iPhone was frivolous, lol...

Re: [Music] The Grand Music Discussion Thread [3]
Did it come with a pacemaker warning? Because that sounds like the kind of thing that would make a device unmarketable in Europe without a crapton of safety warnings to avoid elderly people collapsing onto their turntable while changing the record...
I think there are actual moving parts in the mechanism below the plate because I can hear them move, it's actually louder than you'd expect. It takes like 10 seconds or so for the platter to spin up to a 33rpm (and likewise to spin down to a stop), so it isn't like there's a strong magnetic field that fixes the plate to an axis. The field seems more to lock the plate in a fixed position and then something else, like a weaker field, makes it spin.
Probably an oscillating electrical field. The same principle is used to make those little white magnets spin that can be used to mix chemicals in a lab...you drop the magnet into your fluid-to-be-mixed, put the receptacle on a special base, and flip the switch on the base...
When it's not spinning, there's 4 little legs that come up to hold the platter so it doesn't need magnets. When the thing is spinning, it's a *real* bad idea to try to mess with the plate as it starts to oscillate on a specific axis and it can damage the needle, and probably other things.
Somewhat sounds like a future iteration will require an additional guiding system to avoid accidents with the plate (also, hope you don't live in earthquake country...

I guess it's good that the platter is isolated (well, on what amounts to a soft suspension) to prevent rumble from a bearing - but the arm is not isolated with it, so there is still a path for environmental noise and vibration.
But I won't be buying one - my 60yo Garrard 301 is still quiet enough for me, given all the other sources of noise on a vinyl record. I re-lubricate the main bearing occasionally to maintain its performance, of course.

I do buy vinyl occasionally, but mostly for the huge artwork. I don't even own a working vinyl player at the moment.

Re: [Music] The Grand Music Discussion Thread [3]
Been listening to two albums a good bit lately.
First, saw Chromelodeon get back together to play MAGFest. so I've been listening to their album The Final Recordings. It's pretty good if you like chip rock, in particular, been digging the closing track Triangular.
Also, been listening to FM-84's album Atlas. In particular, I really dig the second track Running In The Night.
Also, Neil Cicierega's ridiculous Ghostbusters remix Bustin has been stuck in my head.

Saw and heard this magnificent feast of audio and visual assault on the senses just a little while ago:
Ken Ishii - Extra
I have to say it made me appreciate much more the animated work of Koji Morimoto as being more than one of the many minds behind The Animatrix. I never knew until I checked out the Wikipedia article that Koji worked on the animation in particular for the concert sequences in Macross Plus. And the song was sweet!

I've been sorting through Kevin MacLeod's vast collection of music that usually finds it's way to YouTube videos. After tons of searching, today I finally found the one piece of score that was used in the Uwe Boll Rant Parody that Phelous made. It's called "Jaunty Gumption" and I definitely will be looking forward to adding it to my iPod collection later.
