In Spring of 2019 (first half of the year, some time from March 20 to June 21, 2019), Netflix is making Neon Genesis Evangelion, Death (true)², and The End of Evangelion available for streaming.

I'm not sure why it took any streaming service this long to get it. And I'm kinda surprised that it went to Netflix of all places.

Now, does this news increase or decrease the possibility that we'll get a bluray release on this side of the Pacific?

Because nobody could release it before the rebuilds finished.

This might be an early marketing move for the final Rebuild film set for the following year. Encourages new people to check out the series and films, and gets them on the hype train now for the big new film just one year later. I wouldn't be surprised now if 3.0+1.0 does manage to reach western markets sooner than later some way or another.

As for a Blu-ray release, I talked about the possibilities a little in the Rebuild thread, but it basically depends on what the contract Netflix has on the series is. Most likely it’s Streaming Only - they most likely can’t call it a Netflix Original and keep it in perpetuity like they did with Little Witch Academia (bought all world rights outside Japan) or Devilman Crybaby (financed the production), especially since their ad heavily pushes how influential this series has been for 20+ years - and they’ll have some Exclusivity on NGE up until the home video release of FINAL in Japan happens. Then another company, Funimation most likely if they’re still around, could put out a physical release. At the very least I would say it makes a physical disc release of NGE + EOE unlikely until late 2021 at the earliest.

But this is all hearsay. I have no idea what will happen. Distribution of visual media is changing at a rapid rate and what was the norm now won’t be the norm in six months.

I'm sure the rights weren't exactly cheap, so for Netflix to renew the contract/make Blu-Reis available/doing something with rebuild; all that depends on what streaming numbers the series is able to pull. I'm sure expectations are very different, since Evangelion is an old classic in a delicate licensing situation.

I'm curious as to if they have the rights for the dub? Do you think Netflix might redub the show?
I hope, at least the subs are ok... I've never used Netflix before, what is their track record with quality of translation and dubbing (especially in the Anime sphere?)

Super cool news! It’s about time Khara licensed out the show. I’m not actually surprised that Netflix was the one to get it, I gather, although can’t say for sure, that it was Khara asking for an insane price for the rights that kept Eva off streaming for so long. Netflix would the only one who could afford it plus have the world wide reach that Khara probably would want to promote the show ahead of the last movie.


I really hope they do give a complete redub, after 23 years the show needs whole sale changes in that regard. Netflix dubs have been fairly good, and when they aren’t, see Aico, they give it a complete redubbing. However, I gather their record subbed is spotty. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about them, and while I don’t know enough Japanese(I’m learning though!) to tell for myself, watching FateExtra with friends who know more has led me to believe those complaints are founded.

After the initial joy for the announcement I think I'm pessimist about it.

I don't see any reason why Netflix should renow the rights after they'll expire (especially if they are expensive and being a 25 years old anime the views should be pretty frontloaded), and if we don't get a BD release now the situation will be exactly as it is today.

Plus the audio and quality video on Netflix is generally not as good as a classic home video release, and of course I wouldn't own the series.

I'm sure a lot of people will watch NGE for the first time because of this, khara will get a lot of $$$ and the 3.0+1.0 hype will grow exponentially, however this does nothing for me.

Well, those are all good things to me, and that's all that Khara will want. Maybe we still won't get Blu-rays, I don't know, but getting streamed on the world's largest platform is a far better fate for the show than the limbo it's been in. It just happens to be the nature of the media landscape today, physical discs aren't nearly as important.

I want to spread the good word of Eva, so I love it!

I do wonder though, if the release will include the Directors cuts of Ep 21 - 24?

Most likely considering they will stream Death without the DC content (if my memory on the various Death cuts isn't wrong).

The show may deserve it, but as a fan of the show the best way to watch the show will still be JPN BDRip + audio + subs localized. And it's kinda sad to me. I want to watch the show in the highest video quality possible.

Agreed EoE's translation completely ruins the meaning of the movie
