Re: News of Anime in Japan
Masaki Yuasa will direct a new Devil Man for Netflix starting early 2018.
This makes me unbelievable happy - especially since Devilman was such an influence on Anno, but I've never gotten around to watching it. And it's directed by Yuasa by all people. Great news, great news.

I've never seen Eureka Seven. . . Would this be a good jumping on point? Is it going to be a sequel or reboot Ala Rebuild Of Eva? Only time will tell.

Re: News of Anime in Japan
Who knows?
If you're interested in Eureka Seven (I rate it highly), just watch the original series, then stop.
Do not watch the film (Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers), which uses the same characters with different personalities and backstories to tell a different, incompatible, and inferior tale. Do not even acknowledge the existence of the "sequel" series (Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean), which retcons the original right from the start, and then retcons itself every couple of episodes, introduces new storylines and characters some weeks which are never resolved or heard of again, and overall is perhaps the worst sequel ever made.
If they make films that are true remakes of the original series but condensed to meet modern impatience, I guess that could be interesting - anything else has the potential to be a complete disaster. Either way, why wait? Just watch the original.

Re: News of Anime in Japan
EU7 is in my top 5 fav anime ever! The hype is REAL!!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHP_9heGEKo
And yes, I hate Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers with a passion, but I don't think AO is as bad as people make it out to be, but mileage will vary on that.

I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever

Re: News of Anime in Japan
Now I've read a bit about it, the idea is that the trilogy covers the original series, but starts earlier with the first "Summer of Love" that is only mentioned in the anime and then follows the same story but with a new ending. If they don't drop the ball, it could be a worthwhile addition to the franchise.

The films will follow The First Summer of Love phenomenon that occurred a decade before the first Eureka Seven series. The anime franchise thus far has hinted at, but never depicted in full, "the beginning of it all." The films will then have the same basic story as the first Eureka Seven series, but will have an original ending. The trilogy will have completely re-recorded lines, redone footage, and new scenes.

The trilogy will again feature the two protagonists of the first TV anime series, Renton Thurston and
Eureka, but will also introduce the "First Summer of Love" incident that occurred 10 years before the
TV anime story and was never directly illustrated in it. The site says that it will not be a remake or a
remix, and all dialogues will be reconstructed. With newly filmed and produced footage, the trilogy will
show a totally new ending "nobody has ever known."

I will have a laugh if the Rebuild of Eureka Seven film series finishes before Rebuild of Eva does.
Re: News of Anime in Japan
Masaaki Yuasa's Mind Game, one of the all-time mindfuckiest anime films, gets a Kickstarted region-free western BD release. Considering the initial funding goal was met within two hours or so, hopefully this encourages more Studio4°C releases in the same vein.

That's good - especially for the US, where comparatively few players can be modded to play even the subbed R4 PAL DVD release which I have.

That, and this will be the first Blu-Ray release of this movie, for unalloyed viewing pleasure in HD the DVD can't provide. (Also, a booklet; and stickers!)

Don't get me wrong, I really want a new Megazone 23 project to happen but if it suspiciously sounds like Macross Delta what with the idol group being talked about, I would rather not. Plus MC Sakura just oozes Freyja Wion homage.

I am incredibly ambivalent. On the one hand, it sounds like they've put a lot of thought in the setting, which is good. We have no aliens this time around (there were none in the original or in III, either, so that's a push), and the factions seem plausible. But the MC design is atrocious, and I dislike extending the mascot robot concept to this particular franchise. I'll have to see how they execute it before making up my mind.

Then you've missed out, since it was a pretty good show.
Sad to see the mangaka was treated like this; proof positive that publishers are far more worried about style over substance (which is an absolutely bizarre thing to say about this particular work, but nonetheless true).

It's a show about boob and butt battles! I can get something like that on the internet for free. don't get me wrong I like fan service, I don't like the entire premise of a show being an excuse for it!

Keijo was the first sports anime that didn't bore me. It was actually funny and thrilling and I liked the cast. One of the best series last year. Sad to not see a sequel.

One in four anime studios is losing money.
In terms of numbers of TV productions, the anime business is burning on all cylinder. In terms of that translating to health of the studios producing all that anime, no so much. Public TV broadcaster NHK's Oikonomiya examined the industry found that one out of four anime studios is experiencing net losses.
After hovering around 20% in 2011-2014, the number of studios in the red broke 25% in 2015.
Remember that link I sent talking about how animating in Japan is considered '3rd world slavery in a modern country? Well. . . a
It reported that 80% of animators (for these shows) quit within their first three years, and average wages for an in-between animator come out to about 60,000yen ($540) a month. Animator Tetsuya Akutsu revealed he had once spent five hours on a frame for which he was paid 200yen (under $2).
