Insomnia struck. Logged on Twitter.

Toho's 2017 Godzilla Anime just started their Twitter account. Announced voice cast & some artwork. Can't make sense of the translation - people have that skill which I lack - but based on the artwork it looks like the film is like Avatar/King Kong where people visit a planet/secret island & come across monsters. And Godzilla.

I don't know, if you know, but Gen Urobutchi is the one responsible for this.

#anigodzi is super-cute. I endorse it.

I'm gonna be honest, I have a really hard time envisioning a Japanese animated Godzilla movie. Maybe I just never watched the right anime, and am therefore ignorant, but anime doesn't seem like a medium that's conducive to the Kaiju genre. (I mean, most of Eva's Angel kaiju levitate on order to cut down on animation costs. I think only two of them walked with their legs in NGE. You get a good sense of scale with Eva's angels, but never a good sense of fleshy, muscular weight. Godzilla needs all of those things in order to work.)

This isn't to say that I think this films gonna look stupid or anything. On the contrary, I'm very intrigued to see what this will look like. It already looks like it might be the best Godzilla animation ever, seeing as how it's only competition is the cheap Hanna-Barbera show, the ugly looking 90's cartoon based off of Emmetich's "Zilla," and that short "Bambi Meets Godzilla" gag that was made in the 60's and released with certain versions of Godzilla '85.

It's Polygon Pictures, so it'll be 3DCG.

Sachiel, Israfel, Matarael, Bardiel, Tabris . . . not sure if the last two count.

Anyway, there was a short for the Expo that had a pretty compelling SR/Kaiju battle. If the anigodzi (heh) movie manages to capture that feel it could work really well.

Forgot about Isarfel. And yeah, Bardiel is simply a successful version of the Lilliputian Hacker angels. And calling Tabris a kaiju sounds wrong.

Most people agree that was really damn good & corrected virtually all of the films problems. If this is superior to it we are in for a real treat.

Not sure how I feel, looks fun but the con trailer genuinely gave me hope it would be serious toned.
:um:

I will say this has grown on me a lot.
And on that thought here are some new TV spots with a good amount of new footage and a reference to events in the opening credits of the 2014 Godilla.

Has it ever been explained why they want to kill the guy? He's just sitting there on his island in the middle of nowhere. Why does anyone give a shit?

Who, Kong? I got the impression from the trailers that they had no idea he's there and they drop bombs on the island as some sort of seismic mapping scheme, maybe searching for treasure or resources.

I'm eager to see it.

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw the TV spots and yeah, they want to kill him for some reason.

I'm sure the guy who wants to kill Kong will turn out to be the Real Villain.

I think Samuel L Jackson wants to kill Kong in retribution for his men that were killed when Kong first went to town on the helicopters.

Also very happy to see a giant Octopus in there.

Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat / Krampus) will direct Godzilla - King of Monsters.

Very high hopes about Michael Dougherty directing! Trick 'r Treat is just wonderful! Krampus is a far more genuine recreation of the 1980s Amblin feel that everyone says Stranger Things pulled off (it didn't) & it's a genuinely fun Christmas movie.

Very curious to see what he'll do with a budget. Hopefully Warner Brothers will let Godzilla - King of Monsters be a film first & NOT end up as their Giant Monster Universe's Iron Man II or Batman V. Superman - a film more preoccupied with setting up the future Cinematic Universe than actually telling the story you paid to see in theaters that day.

^ It shouldn't be too difficult, in theory. Godzilla doesn't have a wildly complex mythology or anything like that. Just have him show up, stomp on a rival monster or two, and have fun doing it.

....unless they want to do something really convoluted with Mothra and the little fairies. Or Planet X. Or Monster Island. Or the Third Planet From the Black Hole.

I've been very apprehensive about US Godzilla 2 sequel as though I think the first film was a solid film the human element for me was a huge let down and just didn't match the level of the Toho films. Hearing that Michael Dougherty is directing G2 changes everything for me because Krampus was such a brilliant homage to the 80's monster classics and I think if any one can balance that human/monster element well its him and he could even add that dark horror edge to it at the same time.

Well kinda ironic then as it seems, Stranger Things breakout actress Millie Bobby Brown will star in G:KOM...
