I'm utterly baffled at this thread. Why would anyone care about defending the dignity of fictional characters in noncanonical works?

My theory is that there are some people who care so much for these characters, even though they are fictional, that they don't want to see anything bad happen to them. It's a reflection of their own views on people.

Sex is okay. Sexualizing people is okay, and people want to feel sexy. They're still people deserving of respect, even if you imagine them naked. Go out, make sexy friends, and get naked with them. Find your Misato (or Asuka, since I guess that's the one you find sexually attractive?).

I know you are right however the reason why I subconciously think of it like that is because of what kind of society I grew up in.

So sex to me is something reserved and tabbooish.

The biggest problem with Eva doujins IMO is that A: they're not all written/drawn by Saigado (AKA the greatest Eva doujin maker of all time) and B: They tend to focus on the same pairings/plots for the most part. The world needs more of the obscure characters, damnit! Let poor Hikari get some time in the limelight! (NO NOT LIKE THAT GO AWAY MEGURO)

Honestly, if/when I get the hang of digital drawing I might do doujins of my own. I have plenty of ideas.

I doubt it. Every mention Mr.Tines makes of /a/ confirms my lack of interest in it - and I don't feel my life is any less rich as a result.

Search for "degrading the characters" on the current /a/rchive, and you'll find what I mean; for example, posts like this one. This was before ACK totally lost it, and simply started accusing everyone who triggered them of being the tripfag !Akemi, like here.

Geez if he ever saw the Gendou shaving commercial he'd probably have to be put on suicide watch.

View Original Postlily liver wrote:the most persistent thing that bothers me when i see them/stumble on them/flip through one out of curiosity is that it usually never really features a character from the series. they look the same, but is it really the same character? i get it, its someones fantasy, but it bothers me on a deeper level that the characters barely resemble their official-canon counterparts in how they would act, or what sort of situation they would put themselves in. i've only actually taken the time to read one of them, which was Re-Take, and it treated the characters pretty faithfully. they still had depth, they still had their general strengths and weaknesses, struggles, insecurities, and so on. most of them i see appear to replace the subject characters' entire personality with one solitary attribute, which is that for some reason they are sex crazed, because the genre demands it. maybe i'm weird for feeling this way, but when i'm browsing some hentai gallery and i scroll past a hentai pic or doujinshi page of Asuka or Rei or Shinji behaving in a way that completely betrays their original character in a really shallow and baseless way, i die inside just a little bit.

what is your opinion on this?

"This is also a world. The possiblity within me. The me at the moment is not always the me as I am. There are many myselves. Yes. There must be the me who is not the Eva pilot."

View Original PostReichu wrote:I feel much the same way, though IMO the shallow, copy-and-paste aspects you describe extend far beyond doujinshi to pretty much all aspects of fandom self-expression. You see it throughout fan-art and fanfic in general. The issue rather preoccupied my younger self, to the point I made a satirical totem to my displeasure.

SPOILER: Show

Explanation: I'd discovered that Evas without armor skeeved most people out. That base reaction of disgust is useful, since it's pretty much what I might feel when I see the soulless, OOC exploitation of my favorite bunch of fictional characters. In Reichu logic, the natural way to satirize the worst habits of the fans is to do the exact same thing, only replace the object of their desire with one of disgust. Hence, I dabbled in risque images of Evas strutting in swimsuits or in skimpy Santa Claus outfits, which eventually led to the abomination above. One could easily imagine a garage kit of the same scenario, only with Asuka and Rei or something.

Most people don't get it, though, and I suppose I can't blame them. True art is ineffable?

Woah, that's awesome. Did you mold those things yourself, or is that what the Eva figurines look like when you remove their armor?

Wow. So that's what they look like without all that armor on. It's definitely creepy, but it screams "quality workmanship" too.

Anyway, to add my two ha'pennies' worth to this thread: If it ain't RE-TAKE, I ain't readin'.

NGE provides partial glimpses that don't always have a sense of internal consistency, so from those I had to develop my own idea of what the Evas really looked like. I used my "naked Eva" design as it then existed (early 2005) when making the sculpture. (It's evolved somewhat since then, though not appreciably.)
