Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
Who remembers that Miraculous Ladybug thing which was set to be a Japanese/French collaborative anime (with a gorgeous PV) that got made into a fairly generic 3D animated series instead?
Because it's getting a movie in 2019.
Information beyond the fact it's supposedly happening is more or less non-existent. If it's real I'll wait for trailers- I was really looking forward to the show that we almost got, and this could be good.

Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
This looks way more interesting and well-executed than the Jim Carrey adaptation. To the film's credit, it recognized that the books individually weren't enough to carry a film, let alone warrant an entire franchise of films. However, instead of taking an opportunity to flesh out one book, it compressed three books into one story and stripped out the bulk of the content. Plus Jim Carrey was entirely over the top, which is a shame because the dude is capable of more subtle acting and his Count Olaf could have been really entertaining had he done so.
A mini-series really is ideal for these books, and this new Olaf seems to have the right balance between cartoon villainy and subtlety, so I look forward to checking it out when it's released.

^ hey I like that movie and I thought Jim Carrey was great he made the perfect balance between complete joke you can't take seriously and intimidating threat. Olaf is supposed to be an over the top bad actor. That's part of the joke. The kids are supposed to be the only one who can see through his disguise is because the the adults in their life are incompetent or outright evil.
Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread
I agree with your assessment of what Count Olaf is supposed to be, and I also think Jim Carrey is a good pick for the role, but he should have cranked it down a couple notches, IMO. He probably needed a stronger director, and given that the existence of the film is probably entirely due to the Harry Potter craze at the time, I imagine not a lot of passion went into the project from the studios.

It's not really Jim Carrey's fault. He played him a lot more like the book, but the studio stepped in and wanted him to be more over the top. There are deleted scenes out there where his performance is better.

Cautiously optimistic for it. But the production value on the Jim Carrey movie looks a bit better. Some of the greenscreen is really noticeable.
and I get that Olaf's disguises are supposed to be terrible. But I could imagine adults actually falling for the disguises in the Jim Carrey movie, I can't imagine people who have met Olaf before falling for his disguises here.
Some of the humor here works. But other jokes, kind've fall a bit flat. . .
It seems they're going to flesh out more of the lore of the books, which had their fair share of puzzles and an overarching mystery, so I'm looking forward to that.

Cars 3? Seriously Pixar? The last cars movie killed the brand for me, just pretend it doesn't-

Okay. . . Who let Chris Nolan direct a Pixar movie?

That's not cool, Ray. Just because we see a slow-mo car crash and turnover doesn't mean Nolan. You had me seriously excited for a Chris Nolan cars film, and now I'm just disappointed. Thanks.

I got the joke, Ray: it was a good one.
Though, Gob still might look good in a cocktail dress.

We have to remember what's important in life: friends, waffles, and work. Or waffles, friends, and work. But work has to come in third.
