More intentionally vague remarks about the NX from Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nx-wil ... n=homepage

NX is "neither a successor to the Wii U nor to the 3DS."

"We swear, it's not a replacement! Honest! Please buy our previous-gen... I mean, a Wii U!"

"It's a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U,"

I certainly hope so for Nintendo's sake.

Also in the interview, Kimishima talked about why the NX is launching next spring instead of coming out in time for the busy holiday shopping season this year. He reiterated that it is important to have a strong launch lineup of games, and it can take time to build that out.

Thank Rei. It seems they've actually learned something.

This is actually how the DS started out. It wasn't originally intended to replace the Gameboy; it just ended up doing so when it was found it could competently do everything the latter did, while competing at a price range the old fanbase could afford. They kept the Gameboy alive for a while with the Advance Micro, but it was found just to be cannibalizing sales at best.

I've always been a Nintendo fan, but the Wii U was the very first console system of theirs I didn't buy. I wish that for this cycle they wouldn't try to revolutionize video games again, and would just release a solid controller-based console with their usually good lineup of games.

Get a pro controler and that's basically what a Wii U is. Has/will have about the same amount of good and worthwhile games that I found on N64/GameCube/Wii.

More than "basically". It's how they marketed it and everything: as Nintendo's return to the traditional controller and "U", the traditional gamer (as opposed to the casual audience, who incidentally made the Wii the best-selling Nintendo console ever).

Really? I don't recall any marketing for the Wii U. At this point, there's no reason to get one with the NX around the corner.

You're right, I should clarify: That's how Reggie characterized the console when he introduced it. I never saw any marketing for the Wii U either after that.

Apparently, Nintendo still thinks it lives in its own little world where it doesn't have to compete with Sony/MS.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/with-n ... n=homepage

"For us, it's not about specs, it's not about teraflops, it's not about the horsepower of a particular system," Fils-Aime explained. "For us, it's about the content. Nintendo is a content-focused company; we create entertainment that makes people smile. So for us, we're focused on bringing our best entertainment to both the Wii U and the NX in the future.

"Whatever Microsoft and Sony are doing in terms of talking about new systems, that's for them to fight out...

:deskbang: Nintendo, you need to care about both. Look at the PS4 and the X1. They have great games AND great specs. Not to mention all the third-party support you lack because of those specs. And they're both outselling the Wii U hand over fist. Do you see the correlation here?

I'm getting really worried about the NX again. This is almost as bad as that controller hoax, except this is their official stance.

Sony does have both, but currently X1 seems to be struggling on the content side. Still, I'd rather have a company that only cares about content, than a company that only cares about specs.

Xbone has games? but from the E3 I saw it sure as hell didn't look like it.

They have this edgy dystopian fantasy with 60 look. A melting pot of Bioshock and Fallout. Sadly it seems to be conceived by a 13 year old... I wish I could have played that when I was that age. Now it merely elicits a meh...

The new Zelda could turn out great (it certainly looks really cute), Pokemon Sun&Moon seems like the usual fair (e.g. enjoyable, if you're into it) and Mario Party on the DS is a genius idea.

Now Sony is, where it's at. FFXV is developed with PS4 in mind foremost, I'm sure (since no one in Japan owns a Xbone), Persona 5 will come too, also, there's Nier, The Last Gurdian, Gravity Rush 2, Bound and Dragon Quest XI (hopefully, it'll come to the west).
Each of these games would be a system seller for me (Gravity Rush 2 & Bound maybe not so much), and since all of them (except for FFXV) are PS4 exclusives my ♥ goes to Sony for this round. It's nice to see that Sony seems to have learned from the last generation, so the failure of Xbone bewilders me that much more.

Xbone may not have tons of exclusives, but I got one basically for its backwards compatibility. I didn't have a PS3, but I had a pretty massive collection of Xbox 360 games. I can still play Witcher 3 on Xbone, plus lots of other great non-exclusive titles. That's enough for me. I don't really need a PS4 to buy the next Persona game or support Hideo Kojima's next vanity project.

Yes, I'm not just talking about X1 exclusives. It has tons of great multiplatform games that Wii U doesn't have because developers don't feel like downgrading their games to make special Wii U versions of them. Back when it was the most powerful console for about a year, Wii U got quite a few multiplatform titles. But as soon as the PS4 and X1 were launched, it got left in the dust. My point is that Nintendo needs both exclusives and multiplatform games to keep the NX selling strong, and they're going to have to be on par with the competition power-wise in order to get multiplatform games. But they still haven't realized that. They want to live in a fantasy world where they have no competitors instead, and keep churning out hideously overpriced consoles. It's 2016, why is the Wii U still $300+? You can buy a much more powerful PS4 or X1 for about the same price now.

Certainly not what I wanted to hear from Nintendo, even if specs never particularly mattered to me in the purchase of a console. I'm only disappointed to the extent that I want to be really wowed by any system I buy, and being told about what it's not capable of is antithetical to that.

A lack of exclusives has never bothered me about any console, though. When I bought my PS3, I didn't do it for "the exclusives", and my favorite games on it weren't exclusive to it. I bought it for the hardware, and for the software it runs, not the software that machines I didn't buy don't.

"Exclusives" are a business reality we begrudgingly accept, not celebrate. Do remember that an exclusive is just one company paying another for a monopoly on their product (or, if it's in-house, a company making you buy their proprietary hardware to play their software). And luckily for all of us, natural forces have been driving games to more and more platforms for quite a while now -- against the kicking and screaming of the very people who benefit from it most, it often seems.

Eurogamer just announced a HUGE leak on the NX, and is citing multiple sources:

http://gematsu.com/2016/07/eurogamer-nx ... cartridges

According to the leaks, it's a handheld gaming system with detachable controllers that latch onto the sides of the screen, and it uses cartridges (most likely flash cards IMO) as its physical media. NVIDIA is reportedly supplying the processors, with NX development kits using the Tegra X1 chip found in the Shield TV Console and Google Pixel C tablet.

Unfortunately, sources also said that it will likely not be on par with either the X1 or PS4 in terms of power. Although I will cut them a little slack for this seeing as how it's primarily a handheld, it will still be a very powerful handheld. Nintendo is also recommending developers use 32GB cartridges for NX games, which gives us another clue as to the system's processing power.

Also according to sources, Nintendo will officially unveil the NX in September of this year.

I still have mixed feelings about this console, but they're mostly good now.

I played the shit out of my DS and traded up for a 3DS, but ever since I got a smartphone I have barely touched the thing because the phone is good enough and far more convenient. Similarly, why the hell would I buy a console when I already have a PC and most of the best games are ported there too? I just don't see the point.

The age of buying a device (not counting peripherals) specifically just to play games should be over. If you must design hardware, make a Nintendo brand smartphone/tablet/whatever that is optimized for gaming and make games that play on it AND other devices of the same type, distributed through a Nintendo service that can compete with and operate seamlessly besides steam/apple store/google play/whatever.

I know this is a leak and we should wait until september, but,I hate the nintendo's take on the NX.Like wii U,it will be a commercial failure because people don't want these gimmicky controls that are barely good that forces the console to be inferior.
