I hope you had the sense to not pay in full upfront and to get some sort of documentation of the agreed due dates.

Re: FML general thread [8]
Not really a fuck my life, but maybe?
SPOILER: Show
I'm 23 years old today. Each year that I get older, I am less sure about my future; or perhaps I am simply becoming more aware that I have no real plan. There are people my age that have already graduated college, and some that have even gotten married and have had kids. And while I'm happy to not have kids, it does concern me that I've been in school just as long and have almost nothing to show for it. I don't know what career I want, but I also know that I don't want to flip burgers all my life. I live in fucking Hollywood, yet I have no friends, I don't go out, and I just work, work, work (work, work). And why? To put me through school, which at this point has no foreseeable end. It's all a circle! Whenever I do find some free time, I sleep, and way more than I should. I don't know when it happened, but at some point I accepted that I don't deserve to be successful, to have friends, or to be happy, and somewhere along the way I stopped being successful, stopped having friends, and stopped being happy. Talking to people has gotten more difficult, and now I'm of the mindset that it's better for me not to engage with others at all. Sometimes I feel like running away and starting over somewhere, but that's exactly what I did when I came here, and exactly what I did the last time I moved, and it has gotten me nowhere. While I feel like I do little to improve my situation, I also feel as though it's not (I'm not) worth the effort to do so. Life is a chore, and I've grown tired of it.

Re: FML general thread [8]
Keeping relationships before what? The feelings of depression? I've probably been dealing with depression since I was 15. Thing is, as a child these feelings are much easier to dismiss; as an adult, I should have more agency in the matter. I ought to be responsible for my own happiness, but I'm instead more inclined to bring myself down.

Re: FML general thread [8]
Adulthood is not a magic cure for anything though, so try not to feel bad on that account.

Re: FML general thread [8]
Yeah one thing I've learned over the past few years is that being an 'adult' does not automatically mean you can just deal with things or suddenly understand things. If anything it becomes harder because you put pressure on yourself to not have those feelings or to understand things. So definitely don't feel bad about that, hell I'm 28 and I still struggle massively with a lot of things.
23 is a really strange time, it certainly was for me.

In the future I'll be using my own contract and an NDA for everything. This person was recommended to me on the word of another, very good editor who is leaving the business this summer and for whom I need to find a replacement.
Unfortunately she's a total flake and still hasn't sent me the fucking work. I'm up against a wall here so I'm pretty annoyed.

Yeah, I was far too trusting at first too, but hopefully you only need to get burned once to change that tune. I always do half upfront, half on delivery for small jobs and set milestones for bigger ones, along with getting all the terms down in an email even if we already worked it out in person or by phone.

I think you may be putting yourself under pressure too much by believing that "as an adult" you should do better than before becoming an adult, and as a result you are getting symptoms of burn-out (not good ). Take the time to actually relax and do fun stuff instead of telling yourself "I should do better next time". If you find this hard to do by yourself, seek help. This is not necessarily counseling, but can also be a course on time-management, or taking the time to relax by going to a sporting facility or other kind of club on a fixed time and learning something you enjoy with others there to help you out.

Re: FML general thread [8]
Sachi what you describe is something I fear more each passing day.
I just turned 18 a week ago , and while I still have my senior year at High School I haven't really looked into what I want to do. I have 0 idea of where I am going in my future. Hell yesterday night I started working at Pizza Hut, and the person training me said a very similar story to yours and he told me not to procrastinate as long as he did.

Re: FML general thread [8]
I didn't know what I was going to do with my life until I was 29.
In many ways, I still don't.
My only advice: Do something, don't sit around thinking about what you could do. Pick something, commit to it, and be sure. You get one shot. If you're sure you doing the right thing, it's easy to free yourself from doubt later even if you picked the wrong thing.
Doubt, angst, wishing to redo the past all steal time from the future. Past is a sunk cost.

Yeah, just do something. If you don't like it you can quit and go do something else. Life is a rich tapestry of multicolor crisscrossing threads, not a long hard hallway leading down into the darkness. I assure you the side paths are there even if you can't currently see them in the gloom.

I went in for a filling and ended up having my wisdom tooth yanked out.

Why? I thought that was only for young people when their wisdom teeth are just coming in.

Re: FML general thread [8]
It's not unusual for them to come in weird and threaten to screw up all the rest. Evolution has created a mismatch between number of teeth vs. jaw size, and since we can work around it with modern dental surgery it isn't likely that selection pressures will fix this issue anytime soon.

Re: FML general thread [8]
My wisdom teeth all came in crooked (except one which will be left where it is). It had a cavity, but the way it came also put pressure on and actually cracked my other teeth. Since it has no mate (when I close my mouth, this tooth didn't close against another one, it just poked my gums) they decided to pull it out. My other teeth will shift now that the pressure is relieved.
Which will hurt.

Re: FML general thread [8]
I see. Thank you for answering my question. Though it sucks that removing it is going to cause so much pain.
