Got around to watching the dub, it was pretty good. The intro scene I thought was terrible, Asuka saying 'four eyes crony' was just cringy. Mari sounded like she had a different voice actor most of the time. Kaworu and Shinji scenes were kinda funny, the scene where Kaworu shows Shinji the outside was pretty good, especially for Kaworus actor.

On the contrary, as opposed to the sub of 3.33 which i've watched like 2 times, I really liked the interactions between Asuka and Mari and found Mari quite funny. Somehow with the dub I find her to be a lot more endearing.

Kaworu's dub is way better than any of his previous English voice actors, I quite liked him. And like you, I liked his scenes with Shinji. Though, I did get more of a creepy, manipulative vibe from him in the dub, more so than the sub. Not sure if that was intentional.

I agree about the cinematic thing though, I don't like it. I just want it to take up the whole damn screen. Letterbox annoys me.

I personally don't understand this dislike of Cinemascope. Pretty much all of the 60's and 70's Godzilla movies were shot that way, and that's what it's all calling back to. Also, I don't know about the rest of you, but when I first noticed Eva Q trailers in Cinemascope my initial reaction was the realization of how crazy this film was going to be.

Sounds like you're using an old 4x3 monitor. It's not nearly as bad on a 16x9 aspect ratio TV. I used to hate it too until I bought one of those. What I wish is that the TV industry would standardize around the 21x9 aspect ratio and make all new TVs in that size, which would make 21x9 images full-screen. 21x9 4K OLED TVs would be amazing.

*Edit* there actually are a few 21x9 TVs and monitors in existence, and they look awesome. Here's one of them:

Interesting indeed! I will be looking up for a tv/monitor of this kind next time! :)

On a side note, and not wanting to open a new thread for the sake of a probably very small number of members I'll post here...

The latin dub of 3.33 comes out March 15th here in Mexico and I must say, given the info so far... I'll lower my expectations considerably...

SPOILER: Show
They changed many characters VA's and brought back some old ones (from the original dub of NGE).
This happens apparently because Zima (the company in charge of the dub) decided to dub in another city than 1.0 and 2.0 and instead of paying transportation for the VA's, they simply swapped half the cast: Shinji, Kaworu, Ritsuko and Fuyutsuki are the same as always (since NGE), but the VA of Rei was not hired for Q (even though she dubbed 1.0 and 2.0, as well as NGE). The VA of Misato from 1.0 and 2.0 is as of now, not confirmed to have returned for Q.
Mari, whom in my opinion did an excellent job remains but then... They changed Asuka! The actress from 2.22 did a good job (as the original NGE actress died some years ago). To my dismay they brought back the Asuka VA used for Renewal, a dub that remade the entire series and that is, in my opinion, the most horrible, half-assed dub work I've ever heard (she included)...

Now, they restored some of the NGE voices that were not used for 1.0 and 2.0 (Hyuga and Gendo) and some used for the Renewal re-dub (Maya)... Still they could noy get NGE Misato to reprise her role for payment issues (either she's very expensive OR Zima is really cheap, I'll go for the second given the low DVD quality).

I'm not mad about them trying to get the old voices back, the thing is, WHY on Earth change them halfway into the film series!?
Why bring back Hyuga's VA when he has less than 10 lines? Why not keep the cast used so far? It was good!
They cheap out grossly when it comes to paychecks (something many VA's generally complain about), living proof is the fact that practically all of the originall NGE cast is alive and working inthe dub bussiness and for whatever reason, they don't bother in trying to hire them again.
Take it from me, at least in Mexico, dubbed anime IS very good; from Sailor Moon, to Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball, all the voice actors are amazing and are an integral part of the characters they play. Unfortuntely for Evangelion, the companies in charge are being completely oblivious to arguably both quality and consistency...

No probs, I'm always interested in other culture's take on Eva. If it helps, you could approach the reason for the different voices as a result of the time skip. Rei Q is an entirely different person, so a different voice actress can make sense... maybe.

Letterboxing and its 4:3 complement are so utterly invisible to me that I wouldn't even be able to tell you what aspect ratio a thing I saw was unless I had that information memorized or could deduce it.

No, I am using a 16x9 monitor. It's not quite 1/3rd of the screen, but it's pretty close to it. If I was watching on something larger it wouldn't bother me, but it's only 24" and I sit in my bed on the other side of my room when watching stuff, so it makes the smallish image smaller. It's just a small thing that always bothered me, I like my fullscreen!

Sorry for my rant :um:

I see what you mean, Mexico had the best dubbs in the world during the 90's but it began to decline as more cheaper options where available thus delivering a cringey and mediocre product.
I did not know that Asuka's voice actress passed away "this makes me very sad since I tought she caught her character perfect and was a terrific voice actress" but over all the -redubs of NGE- and the current mess makes me shake my head in dissapointment. This really is a mess, now I wish even more that Khana would just add subtitles to their releases and be done with these problems once and for all.

I got the english versions because I wanted them right away and I am not even going to watch it in english so I dont really care about the dub quality "as long as it does not affect the purity state of the subtitles". I saw some of the 1.0 and 2.22 in Mexican dub and to be honest it left me plenty to wish for. The words are used very strongly and sometimes out of concept, sounding incredibly harsh and without the subtlety that it once had - and yes I am not using the nostalgia googles here - personally I didnt really like Asuka's new voice actor, her performance was quite forced.

Zuma sucks man, they even refused to release Dragon ball: Revival of F on blu ray! Just to show how cheap they are.

See, I would have thought that the original TV show would have done that better than Q did. Me and a friend of mine marathoned all 26 episodes ("Director's Cuts"), Death & Rebirth, and EoE in one night and came out in the morning feeling less than beaten and left for dead. (The hyperbole is slight, but only ever so slight.) We felt emotionally drained and lack any expressions for life. And yes, it was for a solid two days. It was the worst ideas I ever had when it came to viewing entertainment. But ultimately, I'm glad I did that. And I would like to do it again sometime soon.

After that, we watched the two NTE films. (At the time Q was not released.) We actually felt better despite the world coming to an end by the end of it. When Q came out to Blu-ray, I set up a marathon with just the 3 NTE films with a much larger group of friends, and we still felt fine by the end.

I know that you feel Shinji is being mistreated in Eva Q, but just remember that Misato never once blamed Shinji for anything more than what we saw in the end of Eva Ha. It was Kaworu that kept piling stuff on the poor boy's plate. I still think Misato feels compassion for Shinji. (After all, they are still very much like each other when it comes to their respective dads.) Misato was only trying to keep everyone safe, and never blamed Shinji for things we haven't seen him do yet. She was just taking precautions with what both she and the audience had seen him do so far.

Think about it. Shinji wasn't sad when he was on the AAA Wunder. He was frustrated, sure, and angry with everyone as a result. But he wasn't cripplingly depressed. That only happened after he left Wille and believed everything Seele's boy spoon-fed him at Nerv. Only then was he weeping in every scene and flailing around for answers, and it was about things we the audience couldn't confirm and contradicted with what we had already confirmed.

I'll go into detail later, but it's just that I went into 3.33 expecting more of what I got in 2.22. Not helped by the fact had watched the whole series and EOE for a second time before I saw 3.33 for the first time even after I knew it was going to be depressing and sad.

I don't like depressing or nihilistic things or themes because I don't find them fun. Yes I'm a fan of horror, but that's more of a coping mechanism than anything else, and I tend to be a lot pickier about what I watch these days.

As someone who's pretty angsty and anxious by default seeing someone who was so much like me when I was 14 suffering like Shinji did. It's more than I can bear

I feel like 3.33 a condemnation of me personally as a human being, for daring to enjoy escapist entertainment. But I can't look away, because that's the reality of human nature.

There's a lot I like and don't like about 3.33 but that's really my biggest issue with it. I feel like its an insult to people who do suffer from anxiety and chronic unhappiness. You can come back from an anxiety attack or depression or trauma. But you CANT come back from ending the world, so it makes the supposedly positive message ring hollow. At least for me.

Hmm it's kind of funny, when I marathoned it all "except death and rebirth cause I heard it's only a recap" I felt like going outside and meet with people and stuff. I had to be anywhere but inside my house/room.

This reminds me about when Avatar was released and people where getting Avatar blues. If you feel like that then go take a walk to the woods with some friends, go to a plaza or something to meet new people. After all that is the message of NGE no? Communicate with other people and the risk of getting hurt/rejected it's worth if the reward is getting warmth feeling.

Let's see, I also searched for a place to discuss it online since 4chan it's quite hectic. Which is pretty much how I eneded up joining in.

I think its less important to focus on the world ending aspect, and more to just in general think of it as an analogy of a mistake and wrong of which the character wishes to make up for, being forgiven and move forward in life. That's how I see it at least.

Then again, I personally love watching depressing and nihilistic media because I get very invested, both emotionally and intellectually in it. I find a lot of myself in Shinji, but I don't feel like I should turn away.

I don't understand how you both expected to get more of the same from 2.22 even though you also expected it to be depressing? It's not like 2.22 ended on a happy note.

I feel like 3.33 a condemnation of me personally as a human being, for daring to enjoy escapist entertainment. But I can't look away, because that's the reality of human nature

Why do you think this?

You can't move forward from ending the world. For causing a mistake that ruined the planet, even if it was a mistake. People died, a lot of people died, and because of his actions in 3.33 a lot more people are going to die. If you were responsible for that? Do you honestly think anyone would treat you like a human being? Do you think you'd deserve to be treated like a human being after that?

The theme people say the story has, conflicts with the horrible reality a single person actually being responsible for ending the world would actually entail. Namely that nobody, would even give the kid a chance of being forgiven after being partially to wholly responsible for murdering the entire population of Japan and possibly a much larger portion of the world.

I don't understand how you both expected to get more of the same from 3.33 even though you also expected it to be depressing? It's not like 2.22 ended on a happy note.

Well I watched the first two movies and then the series and then I waited, and lurked this forum for about a year before 3.33 came out. Then when I saw everyone ranting about how they hated the movie how depressing it was etc. I decided to join in on the conversation. I waited for a while, but then I actually watched it. and it was as depressing as everyone said it was.

I was holding out hope that it was overblown, but it wasn't it simply wasn't and aside from being unnecessarily grim and depressing. It pretty much committed narrative suicide, and the setup it's left us with for the finale isn't leaving me too confident for anything but more tragedy.

Goatjesus  SPOILER: Show
Sure it’s typical for a movie franchise to leave loose ends for the rest of the films to tie down, but I argue that this is just far too much to answer at this point. Do I think 4.0 will blow me away? Probably not. There’s a lot of ground to cover. For 4.0 to be a success, it needs to answer all of the questions and progress the plot and end it. The only way I can see it doing this though is to backpedal like crazy with so much exposition it’d be insane and then leave us hanging with an unsatisfying ending that would otherwise be rushed. (Ray: A lot like EOE am I right?)

We must also consider 3.0, which brought up so many more questions involving the nature of angels, impacts, spears, resources, back-stories, characters etc. For example, what is the nature of the Impact Shinji caused by pulling the spears? If it was a normal impact he could have just wished for everything to return to the way it was before, which is what I THOUGHT the entire goal was about. But Kaworu’s like (bad dub voice) , "no Shinji, is bad." But why is it any different?

We just saw two movies that refused to acknowledge Mari in any significant way on top of lacking any sort of symbolism to allude to complex solutions. In fact, 3.0 wasn’t even an important part of the plot. . . .Mari's probably not going to be developed in 4.0. She magically disappeared at the end of 3.0 anyway. It's very unlikely with just how many questions we have, plus we need to know her backstory, her purpose, why she knows so much in 3.0 about Seele and the nature of "ADAMS", and does everyone realize how much exposition this would need? She hasn't had any meaningful interactions, any meaningful actions in general that couldn’t have been done by using another cast member, nor any redeeming flaws or characterization.

Not to mention Sakura, who probably SHOULD be developed in 4.0. She has potential, she wasn’t just thrown in out of nowhere, but she most likely won’t be given any time just because of how many other characters they introduced and plot elements they have to explain.

Why do you think this?

Because. . . every time it seems like the story is going to give Shinji a chance to prove to the world he's not worthless, the universe conspires to emasculate him for it. Literally every choice he makes is a bad one, and ends with him being blamed, and the few times the choices he makes are good ones, eventually the world conspires to even take that away from him. and everything good he's done is eclipsed by the sheer extreme consequences of his actions.

and Shinji IS meant to be an expy for the audience, so whenever something happens to him, it can and should be taken as an implicit if not outright criticism of the audience. The audience would like to believe we'd be heroes if we piloted a giant robot, but in reality we'd probably break down just like Shinji. We'd like to believe we'd save the world, but in reality we'd probably f*ck it up even worse like Shinji did. We'd like to think we'd save the girl from the monster, but in reality she'd probably die or abandon you because of it.

But anyways, that's enough from me, I think I'll comment further on another thread
I’ll escape now from this world, from the world of Jean Valjean, Jean Valjean is nothing now! Another story must begin!

Phew, I’m not tense anymore… now I’m just miserable.
People say "be yourself" but that's bad advice, if we were all to "be ourselves" many of us would stop wearing clothes. -Chuckman
