Whew, good.

Did he actually have propane tanks strapped to his body? What was the, uh, plan there?

No idea. Supposedly, he was mentally ill and off his meds. There was one particular person he was after, although no one knows whom.

Rambling post he made on Facebook the day before

Apparently, he wasn't after anyone, and was attempting suicide by proxy.

Besides a solar farm probably not really contributing much either way, the excuses that are being given seem rather... imaginative.

A possibly interesting comment thread, thought it might be worth sharing.

SPOILER: Show
Only solar panels do in fact suck up the sun's energy. On the scale we're talking about, it wouldn't be an issue but the energy from the sun being used by solar panels is energy that can no longer be used to warm the earth through reflection or for photosynthesis. It's energy from the sun that is being captured and not reflected back into the atmosphere, space or being captured by plant's own solar panels. Solar panels wouldn't work if they didn't capture the Sun's energy.

As far as solar energy not being a finite resource or a fossil fuel, what do you think the sun is? It's a gigantic nuclear reactor converting hydrogen into helium through fission and so forth until it hits iron. Once it get's to iron, it stops, game over. Of course that's ~5 billion years out and we'll be worrying more about the corona engulfing the earth than about the small amount of waste energy we collected using solar panels if we are still alive at that point. It's still a problem that supposed scientific media is spreading this unscientific bullshit and leading people to believe that the sun is not a finite resource.

Before yelling at other people to get educated, perhaps being educated yourself might not be a bad idea. Then you can talk about the gains of solar energy versus the impacts instead of making scientifically unfounded statements that violate the conservation of energy principal.

(some other dude): Part of solar energy reflects. The remaining energy divides into heat and electricity. Then the electricity becomes heat via computers and light bulbs. So solar panel just increase the amount of heat we get from Sun because of less reflection.
Learn physics !!!
Sun will fade out either way. More energy you capture the better it is for you otherwise it will travel to deep space with no return.

(OP): And energy is still consumed and captured. The first law of thermodynamics, a bedrock principal of the physics you're telling me to learn, states that it is impossible to create or destroy energy. Solar panels convert solar radiation into both useable and waste energy thus taking the energy out of they system for our use instead of other uses. I'm not against solar farms, the statement that none of the energy of the sun is diverted by solar energy in this article is just wrong from a physics standpoint.

It's energy from the sun that is being captured and not reflected back into the atmosphere, space or being captured by plant's own solar panels. Solar panels wouldn't work if they didn't capture the Sun's energy.

Which is a common misconception. Yes, the panels do absorb energy, but no, that energy is not removed from the Earth's ecosystem (any more than it is "sucked" from the Sun). The electricity typically generated enables us to use and redistribute the energy from the Sun, but that energy finally ends up as heat in the Earth's ecosystem just the same, whatever use we make of it in the interim. The only instance in which this is not immediately so is if we use the energy to create, for instance, chemicals which require energy to be formed, which will only release that energy when they take part in a suitable reaction.

I've read a similar argument about how the second law of thermodynamics disproves evolution: evolution involves creating life that is more complex, which would require putting more energy into a system to create life that consumes more energy. This argument, obviously, is not true. Like this first argument, the OP in that comments thread is not showing that he is educated on the subject.

The way the sun warms the earth is through hitting the atmosphere and vibrating the molecules in the air. The heat that we get from that light hitting the ground is negligible. Sure, the panels are capturing the energy the sun is giving off, but they're not somehow making the sun weaker (a fear some people have, believe it or not) or making it so that the energy they're taking cannot be otherwise used. Sure, a plant won't get sun if you build the solar panel over it, but the same thing would happen to that plant if you built a low-lying bridge over it.

When he says that the sun is not a finite resource, he's correct only in a technical sense. Five billion years is a very, very long time-- five thousand million years, or five thousand thousand thousand years. Modern human history has been for such a small fraction of this time that it becomes ridiculous to say that the finite life of the sun is a reason why we shouldn't be so quick to adopt solar energy.

Solar panels do not convert solar radiation. They get their energy when the photons strike the solar panels. Is it taking energy that other things could have used? Well, yeah, because we're the ones using it as humans. It's the same thing that happens when we eat: there's a source of energy that we're using for ourselves and taking away the ability for it to be used by others.

Paul also does a good job explaining in his post.

The irony of telling people to get educated is that OP doesn't really understand what he's talking about.

I'm having a hard time telling if these are actual social activists or performance artists lampooning liberal social movements by yelling random, vaguely academic sounding gibberish at people.

It is possible to support a cause without letting everybody know about it. I'm not out there doing ALS walks or helming fundraising events for the homeless, but I still care about both of those issues. I can also participate in a charity for my local temple on the same day as a cancer fundraiser while still supporting both events-- my not participating in one has no bearing on whether or not I support it.

Why does everything now have to be interpreted as having a hidden agenda? Collecting money for kids with cancer is just that: collecting money for kids with cancer. If on some occasion it's being done in a way that interferes with some protest then by all means point out that they're interfering, or even being insensitive - but calling it aggression (the "micro" is just window-dressing) is simply a waste of effort, and diverting attention from your own cause.
