Just because this kind of thing happens at some protests does not and should not reflect poorly on the BLM movement-- after all, I do support the cause at the root of the movement, even if I do not necessarily agree with how some of the protests manifest themselves. I'm heeding my own advice here and looking at what I wrote on my whiteboard: "Don't let the actions of a few speak for the actions of the whole."
However, I have no qualms about condemning the few. And I believe condemnation of a serious order is necessary here.

These people are racist and are breeding racial strife. Up and coming generations of whites will start avoiding black people out of fear of being berated and assaulted because they're white, even if it's a tiny minority of black people that engage in this behavior.
There is a time and a place for aggressive agitation in a campaign for social change and this is not it.

...I'm not sure if this is satire or not, and I'm reluctant to assume one way or the other because you sometimes post stuff I can't make heads or tails out of, so I guess I'll prepare responses for both contingencies.
Satire SPOILER: Show
What I'm communicating here is that there is a small faction of people attaching themselves to a larger movement with a cause that I can imagine a lot of people support at a base level, and that what this faction is doing is harmful. What I take issue with is that somehow these students thought it was okay to go disrupt the study time of other students, to insult them both verbally and with physical gestures, and to deny them common courtesy. I'm not suggesting that this is going to become some big, giant, generational racial split. I am suggesting that what happened at Dartmouth is a problem, and one that needs to be addressed, ideally by Dartmouth administrators and hopefully by the other students themselves. I'm explaining a situation, not trying to scaremonger.
Not Satire SPOILER: Show
That feels a little heavy to describe what's going on at Dartmouth. I think you're spot-on about the racist behavior of those involved and their breeding of racial strife, but it seems going a bit beyond to suggest that this is going to become a generational problem. I'm not sure how much there is to gain by overstating the problem; it would seem to be better to talk about what specifically is happening, and what might come about as a direct, more immediate result.

Stupidity like that doesn't have to happen that often to become the face of the movement. Between the media latching onto it for ratings and the way things go viral, it only needs to happen a few times because people won't hear about all the times it doesn't.
That's the problem with these modern movements with no leadership and an inclusive "declare yourself a member and speak on behalf of a hashtag" methods. It makes it easy for them to be taken over by trolls, crazies, and agents provocateur.
I expect this to continue and get more intense on college campuses, because professors are encouraging it.

I agree with you completely on these points. It does very well stand to become the face of the movement in the media, something that likely stands to anger the people who don't condone it. Your point about the modern, leaderless movements I also support; I've mentioned it myself to friends on campus and adults off it. If it makes its way to my college... well, I'll be out trying to put a stop to it.

I agree. It's never a good idea to judge the majority of a movement by the fringe minority. Hell, i've been a victim of that fallacy on this very forum.

I said and did some dumb and hurtful things in my time here when i was younger. If i ever hurt you, i'm sorry. If you see any of this while reading old threads, i'm learning and trying to improve. Donut redemption arc in progress.

They problem here is that these people being are being taught to behave this way by professors of such and such studies that have no understanding of the historical and sociopolitical forces that make protests work.
It's amazing what nonviolent action can accomplish. Academics have introduced this idea that you have to be abrasive and invasive to get a message across and turned movements into a contest to see who can be the biggest asshole.
Violence only begets the thing which it seeks to destroy.

Time for me to put my money where my mouth is. The protestors have arrived where I am.

I often wonder if (or rather when) they'll show up where I am and how I should react to their presence if they make a nuisance out of themselves. I honestly hope I don't have to deal with it; last thing I need is an outlet for all my repressed rage.

I go to a large public university, and we have our own police department on campus separate from the city police department. They have a non-emergency line, so most students here are keeping that in mind as their first option of figuring out how to break up a protest that is interfering with the rights of the other students to use a space.
