They supposed to look asian in contrast to european characters in this comic. Buut the author does have a point and Kunzite's face sums it up perfectly :D

Good thing about the manga is they smarten up quickly to evil villain plots. Though Minako in Codename Sailor V, not so much

Usagi is SO jelly of Rei stealing her first date with Mamo-chan in the park. Speaking of Rei, I can't get enough of her English actress Cristina Vee seducing my hearing with that AWESOME voice of hers. Also, that home economics teacher Miss Akiyama looks way better in her natural look than the Nephrite possessed makeup overload they were going for.

Yep, the episode title for the Rei date being "Usagi is frantic" is a pretty telltale sign she likes Mamoru. The manga does a better job at the Usagi/Mamoru attraction, though. Various reasons for that; IIRC it was Director Sato, not Ikuhara, who disliked Mamoru so his overall treatment wasn't as built-up/important as in Naoko's manga.

I'd recommend Crystal to new fans, but IMO watching Crystal before reading the manga is like watching a film remake before the orginal movie. You'll lose various nuances if you don't check out the orginal work first. The 90's anime and manga are different enough IMO that you can tackle whichever first.

I'm not as familiar with the VIZ dub (I know of some of the voice actors) but I'm glad to hear people are digging it; having been introduced to the DIC dub in Toonami '98. What do you think of Mitsushi as Usagi?

Her teacher really was a natural beauty, huh?

I've been so focused on the VIZ dub for up to episode 16 that so far I have only reached up to episode 6 in Japanese. As for Mitsuishi, she does an amazing job as Usagi. Should be exciting to hear Hisakawa, Tomizawa, Shinohara, and Fukami when they come up.

Ami and Rei are adorable as Usagi's companions in the first half of season 1. Mako and Minako are cute in the second half, too. I definitely think you'll enjoy the Japanese version whenever you check it out!

I caught up to episode 8 in Japanese and hearing Aya Hisakawa's rendition of Ami was kawaii. She's got this natural beauty to her voice that comes off as less grating than what they were going for with Usagi. As for Luna, I always thought Keiko Han did a much better job than Michelle Ruff ever will. Nothing against Michelle Ruff but she sounds WAY too young for the part and maybe that's just my bias as I prefer the DIC dub Luna better.

In my head, I associate Michelle Ruff with Yukari (P3) and Miki (Marmalade Boy)...While Luna's supposed to sound young (as if she'd be Usagi and the girls' age, which the manga goes into), she sounds TOO young for sure. And JYB!Artemis as forever Adachi/Power Rangers

Han as Luna and Beryl is excellent though. Out of curiosity, are you watching via Hulu/Neon Alley, the DVDs/BDs? Or other means?

I am watching the VIZ dub through the DVD sets I bought. I have up to Sailor Moon R and the second DVD set of R has that thing where you gotta call the number to get an unbugged disc but I have tried tons of times to call and it seems to be out of service.

Odd. I think plenty of people have gotten their replacement discs, hopefully this helps:

Some people haven't heard back in a month, according to Twitter :cringe:

Not the first time Sailor Moon R had a replacement disc issue: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/php ... 90#4669690 Oh the memories! Though I only bought ADV's season 1 release back then.

I think it's more an issue of the number not working because I don't live in the U.S. despite Puerto Rico being a U.S. commonwealth. Haven't had much luck in turning the tide for my replacement DVD.

In terms of recent episodes I have watched, the Shingo/Mika doll episode was nice to see another side to Shingo besides the usual little bro who picks on Usagi. I might be confusing voice actresses but Mika's mom kept reminding me of Veronica Taylor but I could be wrong. Also, the episode where Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask finally have a conversation about what happened in their past while hanging on for dear life in the elevator shaft was a big relief because I thought they would never get to this point of talking about that important issue with all the Usagi/Mamoru teasing scenes.

Nephrite and Naru's relationship is interesting in it's devilish way of confusion from both parts of why they do interest each other. Nephrite talking back to Queen Beryl was a bit of a shock since I was expecting total obedience from all of her lackeys. And what gender is Zoisite again?! I know we're supposed to assume Zoisite is a he but his mannerisms match more feminine ways of cattiness.

Heh, Zoisite being a stereotypical flamboyantly gay male is why the '95 DIC dub had to turn him into a (flat-chested) female.

Rewatching Moon as I'm older, the Nephrite/Naru angle honestly creeps me out. Age difference, it's anime so whatever, but the abuse on Nephrite's part, just ugh. The generals in the manga do have somewhat of a backstory the anime neglected, in case you're curious :) Though to be fair, the manga's monthly chapter releases were only so far ahead of the weekly anime with certain concepts/etc.

Watched the psychic girl beach episode and besides Rei being the most gorgeous out of all of them in a swimsuit, the psychic girl's father really was asking for it antagonizing Sakiko and limiting her contact with possible friends just because of what society thought of them at the time. I thought Sailor Moon would be more angry and determined to take him out rather than the ghost.

Episode 21 was a joy especially since I recognized Tara Sands' voice as the possessed animator girl. I'm a huge fan of her work. I also finished off the remaining two episodes of my Season 1, Volume 1 DVD set tonight with the party episode and part 1 of Nephrite's downfall. The Usagi/Mamoru first kiss was phenomenal to bear witness to and as for the Nephrite/Naru romance, it's pretty powerful material to see Naru basically laying her life on the line for something that's gonna end tragically.

There's a separate thread for Crystal, which is where you'll find them.

I'm two episodes away from witnessing Sailor Venus' debut! ^_^

I think I am starting to get accustomed to Michelle Ruff as Luna since her big episode with the fat cat was some extremely funny material. But she's gonna have to ditch any prospects of dating fat cat since she's destined to be with Artemis who will debut in two episodes as well. Odd choice to go with Johnny Yong Bosch IMO but i'm excited to see what he can bring to the table.

Been a long time, by now I FINALLY saw Usagi and Mamoru be cordial and friendly with each other especially since they find out about their former lives as lovers. Poor Rei! Also, the Zoisite and Kunzite relationship coming to an end after Zoisite's demise was bittersweet and touching. About 9 to 10 episodes to go and the first season is in the bag and I can move on to R.

Well, it's been a long time coming but as of today, I FINALLY got through season 1 in it's entirety! :D

Sailor Moon's fellow Guardians paying the ultimate price for her to go it alone and defeat Queen Beryl each had their own emotional sendoff especially with Rei making peace with Usagi and regretting not kissing Yuichiro before parting in her final words. :sniffle: Then having Usagi go it alone but with her friends backing her up in spirit to defeat Queen Beryl and uncorrupting Mamoru in probably the most touching scene between the two yet of her showing him the locket with the song inside. I do have to admit that the world doing a reset button and going back to square one didn't exactly gel right with me feeling like it was just a ploy to get more seasons financed and I would've been totally fine with this being the only season because it ended on such a high note but I do feel like when I watch the other seasons, they'll bring me more adventures filled with heart and passion for the craft.
