It's no secret that part of what made the original Evangelion so fresh is that it took several tropes that existed in shonen anime and subverted them in new ways. That said, I'm willing to bet that the new Eva movies will subvert tropes started by the old Eva for the same kind of surprise.
These are purely conjectural, but here are some ideas I'd have for subverting the Old Century version. I don't expect any particular one of these to be in there, but I'm sure there will be similar sorts of things:
-Rei dies... and doesn't come back
-Kaji survives, but is actually loyal to Seele and betrays NERV
-Shinji and Asuka actually engage in sexual congress
-For a bonus, the suggestion to do so is put forth by Shinji
You know, things of that sort that would shock long-time familiars of "Þe Olde Eva". Feel free to add to the list of possibilities. And by that, I mean add to the list of possibilities or I'll break into your house at night and eat your dog.
