It's perhaps worth remembering that this isn't entirely accurate. Asuka is not a 28-year-old in a 14-year-old's body. Instead, she's a 14-year-old with 14 years of experience. Her mind has never developed beyond that of a 14-year-old's, and that means her perspective is still that of a teenager, not an adult. She got older, but she never grew up.

Which doesn't make her a better prospect for Shinji, of course. If anything it just makes her a poor prospect for, well, anyone, at least until her body catches up with her mind.

That said, while that is an awesome Sakura quote I think she'd have better prospects than Impact Boy. She's, what, 20? And she's gonna saddle herself with a 14-year-old who's fucked up the world on an unimaginable scale? Yeah, let Wille and the pilots handle him, she's a healthy young woman who's going places. If she wants to take care of a basket case let her rescue a puppy or something.

Not to diss the possibility of romance at all, far from it, but who says you can't find love without romance involved? There are other kinds of love out there, and some people are happy with their lives being single.

I'm of the mindset that if Shinji can't have Rei, he can always seek Sakura for solace since Asuka treats him like crap and he's really only had so few interactions with Mari to make any other impression than she's a whackjob.

I agree with most of you...It could be Asuka...but in a very twisted way ("Oh, I still like you despite you are a pile of cowardice", well, at least is the only character who was openly attracted to him) and Rei....let's be serious, after 3.0 it would feel weird, too many references about her sister and clone condition.

I don't expect many references to shipping in the movie, this is not gonna be EOE, which paid so many attention to a relationship, not after 3.0. And As I've said before, I would bet for Asuka, but I don't think they'll give time to that. But Rei? In That way? No. They are gonna pay a lot of attention to their relationship, but 3.0 stated very clear the nature of that relationship. There is not even a single inch of true shipping in the movies. It's gonna be the same relationship they had in NGE but developed in other way and improved.

Yup. Sakura and Mari would make great older sister figures, and would do a lot to help him out. But he'll have to grow up and sort himself out before he finds any romantic prospects, and I doubt that'll be anyone in the current cast.

And while we'd both probably agree that we'd love for some AxS ending, I can agree with Bags on this one that maybe romance is the last thing that needs to be on Shinji's mind, and for probably a good reason. (Still fun to speculate, especially with Suimame. ^_^ )

Since Valentine's day is just around the corner, a lot of people are getting into "relationships" just for the sake of being in one, hence my quotations.

But, for a long-lasting stable relationship to work, the thing is about romance is that your partner is not something for you to have just so you won't be alone. True romance is when you find somebody that makes you BETTER when you already are GOOD. That's why a lot of relationships looking for healthy people to "fix" themselves ultimately fail in the long run, cause the thing that brought them together has fizzled out or hurts them more in the long run.

That's why Shinji, at least in the Post-3I world is a better candidate than Rebuild Shinji at this point, because he's now on his way to be good now that he's had his catharsis, the same goes with Asuka.

Rebuild Shinji however has still a long way to go, and everyone else has already moved on, so he needs to catch up, and unfortunately he won't find that kind of relationship with Wille. Maybe after they're all done fixing the world and he's had some much needed therapy, MAYBE, but until then, there are bigger things at stake. And even if he doesn't find anyone, that's still okay, cause he'll still have the support of his new family and new friends along the way. There are different types of love in the world, and none are less than the other. ;)

Depends on how you interpret it.

On a more serious note (albeit colored a bit due to my shipping tastes), whatever Rei and Shinji's relationship is, it has been one of the main focuses of this entire saga. Even in 3.0, as it was the former's absence that led to a lot of Shinji's decisions and the like. So whether it is romantic or sibling, I have a feeling that it will play a very crucial role in the next film.

As for Asuka, it will take some seriously good writing for me to buy that she will end up with Shinji in the end.

More likely though, Shinji won't end up with anyone. Shipping isn't exactly what Anno places the most importance on.

I don't have a race in this horse, mostly because I despise Re!Shinji on a fundamental level. But, I doubt Anno cares about age since he has a 30 year old pedo trying to make Re!Shinji happy.

well it won't be Rei because Rei is going to die because Rei is Rei and that's what Rei does best. So I guess that leaves Asuka, provided she survives. Also this is all assuming Shinji survives so yeah....

Honestly though I'd rather Shinji come to terms with himself and his place in the world before launching into any sort of romantic relationship. I doubt even at the end of it all he'll be in a place to engage in a long and stable romance. Having Asuka as "just" a friend would be preferable and perhaps more fruitful for the both of them.

Almost anytime someone fell in love/had a thing in NGE, one of them died.

Misato and Kaji? Kaji dies.
Misato and Hyuga? Misato dies.
Gendo and Ritsuko? Ritsuko dies.
Maya and Ritsuko? Ritsuko still dies.
Shinji and Asuka? (If one shipped that way...) Asuka dies.
Shinji and Rei? (If one shipped that way...) Rei kinda dies. And then kinda dies again.
Hikari and Toji? Toji almost dies.

NTE is very different, even if the jury is still out on Kaji's whereabouts and whether or not Ritsuko did it with either NERV staff memeber. (I wonder what Maya's change in attitude was all about in Q.) But so far is seems as though a close relationship isn't the "Red Shirt" of NTE. If that is the case, then perhaps those in relationships in NTE are casted as survivors.

Asuka's already survived a close brush with death in Ha, so shes the most likely candidate within terms of survivability. As cute as a Sakura pairing of any kind would be, especially with Shinji, I kind of expect to see her as a casualty in Eva Shin, following her brother into whatever it is that separates the living from the dead in NTE. (Maybe she'll even be killed by whichever FoI Toji became, just to have some cruel and tragic irony in the narrative.)

@Xander
Ray, just because Shinji screwed up doesn't mean he's fully exempt from having a happy life with someone of the Eva cast.

Sure, why not? Lets just throw ' the Suspension of Disbelief' out the window and go full meta-narrative! Because that's how real life works! :irked: :

In any kind of realistic setting, after what Shinji's done, what he's been through, what he's suffered. Him having a happy life after something as horrendous as Third and Fourth Impact? It's unbelievable.
There's no way in any kind of realistic setting. That Shinji would be anything but screwed over for the rest of his life after everything he's responsible for and played a part in. That INCLUDES having any kind of successful romantic relationship.

In any kind of realistic setting, there is no way anyone would ever give a relationship with Impact Boy a chance, after finding out who he is and the part he played in ending the world. They might pity him at best, but pursue a romantic relationship with him? That's just not believable!

And while we'd both probably agree that we'd love for some AxS ending, I can agree with Bags on this one that maybe romance is the last thing that needs to be on Shinji's mind, and for probably a good reason. (Still fun to speculate, especially with Suimame)
. . .

Rebuild Shinji however has still a long way to go, and everyone else has already moved on,

Exactly! Thats the point I'm trying to make here! The point noone seems to understand! They've all moved on! They moved on FOURTEEN F**KING YEARS AGO! IT'S NOT BELIEVABLE THEY'D CARE ABOUT HIM ANYMORE! Any feelings they may have had for him are outweighed by the things they've had to suffer because of him and his stupidity! He's been nothing but a bad memory to them for that long! It's unbelievable, in a realistic setting like Eva that anyone would care for or forgive someone who's done what he's done, after screwing humanity over twice. After having nothing but memories of hate and loathing and regret for over a decade. :slapslap:

(Calms down)

Let me explain in a calmer tone.

Here is why I can't support Asuka shipping. In Rebuild. Not because I don't want it, (I do ship Shinji and her at least in the original series). But because it's unbelievable.

Lets assume you met the person of your dreams. You had a relationship, and the feelings you both had were very real. But the relationship ended in the most horrible, disgusting, violent way possible. For both you and your partner, after that the partner disappears, and is never held accountable for what he did to you. A decade passes, you recover, you move on, you form new relationships, you mature, you learn to accept the reality of what happened to you. But in the back of your mind you still hate how he/she hurt you so, and want some sort of payback, or at the very least closure.

Then the person who hurt you comes back into your life, apologizing for what he/she did to you and wants to renew the relationship. But he's still just like he was back then, barely having matured at all. You can't be sure he means it or not. What do you do?

Realistically most people don't renew the relationship with someone like that. They choose get as far away from a person like that as possible, after telling them exactly how they feel about what they did to you physically and emotionally.

and guess what? Asuka did just that! She called him a BRAT! She's a respectable older woman who's suffered for 14 years because of his cowardice and guillibilty! You don't pursue a relationship with someone like that. Especially not after they've hurt you so

. . . and did I mention before how there's only one movie left?

That's why I think any kind of Shipping of Rebuild Shinji and Asuka is unbelievable. In every sense and use of the word.
I’ll escape now from this world, from the world of Jean Valjean, Jean Valjean is nothing now! Another story must begin!

Indeed. You pretty much capture my thoughts exactly. It's been FOURTEEN YEARS since 3rd impact. They knew Shinji for what? A couple of months at most? Thinking back a decade or so and there are people I knew for years that I can only just remember. I can't imagine remembering much about someone I knew for a couple of months a decade and half ago. The one thing that will have kept Shinji in their minds is 3rd impact. They won't remember him as that shy boy who lived with Misato and Asuka. He'll be a symbol to them, a symbol of 3rd impact, of all the pain and suffering they've been through for a decade and a half. Even if they come to know him again as a decent person those 14 years of misery and bitterness are going to be hard to wipe from their minds.

And yeah, expecting Shinji to be in anyway capable of handling a romantic relationship by the end of 4 is wishful thinking at best. Kids gonna be messed the hell up for his whole life after the mess of nonsense he's been through.

From this I have to conclude that you didn't watch the movie. 3.0 shows numerous times that they still care about Shinji. I'm skeptical that Anno will include any romance in the movie, but to make this flat-out wrong assertion that nobody will ever forgive Shinji or that his friends don't care for him anymore is absolutely ludicrous given what we saw in 3.0. You're letting your cynicism rewrite the movie in your own mind.
