I have no words. Here's a video detailing the whole thing.

I guess we know what's being done with the Evangelion money.

My... My GOD! :gendoscheme: This is too perfect. The Japanese must like sending things to the moon; this is kind of like that Pocari Sweat thing. http://lunar-dream.com/en/

It's easy enough to send something the size of a large dinner fork to the moon!

Man I thought they found a lance type object on the moon. Bout to say, but this is pretty awesome too. Next we must make the Evangelion the first Bipedial Mech.

^ *Thinks* Ohh! My bad. (I was going with what the real life version of the Evangelion would be, because I don't think Adam or Lilth actually exist, so we can't clone their cells. Unless we have a way to clone a massive amount of human flesh to create their bodies, and imprint a soul, and have an actual Shinji Ikari.)

As awesome as this would be, I think they might have fudged the crowdfunding. If the first tier donation is 5,000 and the 2nd 10,000......that's quite a lot by crowdfunding standards. If they had allowed smaller tiers like 1,000 so that lots more people could donate an amount reasonable for shenanigans they would be way better off.

EDIT: there's also a statement from Anno on there:

This vision might be a crazy thing coming out of the world of anime, but is now possible in the realm of reality.
(things from) Entertainment are now able to appear in reality. I have deep feelings of surprise and joy as well as deep gratitude (overcomes me). I wish it becomes a success.

Once again, my Japanese is not good, but I guess we got the gist of it.

Their goal is roughly 1 000 000 Dollars. So why don't they make it a little bit bigger? If this goes through, I'll be so happy.

Make what a little bit bigger? The lance? Do you know how disgustingly expensive it is to launch things into space? Both weight and volume are always extremely constrained. Even if this is a piggyback payload they still have to pay not only for getting the lance up there but the entire rig to launch it so that it sticks into the regolith. See the video for the plan.

Even $1mil is literally pocket change when it comes to space. Universities spend that much to piggyback tiny 10cm cubesats to low earth orbit. This is going to the moon so the costs increase even more and their rig is much bigger.

In a hurry, so quick general idea: Anno's statement was saying about successfully bringing out the dreams/wild ideas in entertainment and how this was a success.

Pretty interesting stuff! I wonder if NASA will get involved in some way? If this idea gets off the ground (heh), it'll definitely bring about mass media attention to Eva for sure.

Well, seems I've nailed it.

No, I don't I thought if you're going to space, it was of no consequence if one's freight is 1 kg or 100kg, since there is already a massive amount of energy needed. But I'm terrible at Rocket Science, so what do I know.

For every kg of freight that needs to go up you need some fuel, to bring that fuel up you need even more fuel, etc. For every launch the payload must be known exactly to configure the launcher to actually get stuff where it has to go.

In certain situations you are allowed small secondary payloads but that always depends on whether the main customer's desired orbit is also good for your mission. That usually works for whatever stays close to Earth but going to the moon is pretty much paying the entire way yourself.

Looking through the crowdfunding site they actually list a cost of $1,200USD for a single gram (1g) to get to the moon and they expect the lance + release mechanism to be 600~700g. They're assuming an exchange rate of 120yen to the dollar, so 100,000,000 yen = 694g max weight. So it seems all they're asking money for is the launch costs and absorbing the R&D on their own.

The lander the lance is piggybacking on has been in development since 2008 and officially registered for the Google Lunar X Prize in 2009:

EDIT: for more context:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Lunar_X_Prize
This is the main challenge. The Lance of Longinus thing is an opportunity to ride along and also by no means a guarantee it will happen.

Google started that up after this ended:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Lander_Challenge
Fun fact: Armadillo Aerospace, which performed well here was a pet project for John Carmack who moved on to working on the Oculus Rift VR goggles.

NASA has since made contact with two of the teams competing for the Google Lunar X Prize through this program:

We've officially crossed the line from Otaku-dom to creating Pagan idols. The theological implications are staggering.

When humanity inevitably goes extinct. Only two people will be remembered. Richard Nixon, and Hideaki Anno, both of which put their mark on the moon for future sentient life to discover.

This is pretty awesome, and existentially terrifying.
