I'd bet that we'll see quite a bit of Rei Q in Shin-- but I really do hope that we get Poka Rei back. I understand that we have no way of knowing if we will, and that Rei Q is her own character that deserves a little development, but I'll be damned if I don't miss the old Rei, even if it's just a little bit.
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

My thoughts exactly. It was beautiful in every sense of the world - and a large number of the scenes are just asking to be high quality wallpapers.
As for the short's importance, canon and other-wise: I'm sure this is more about the concepts than actual canon happenings. Shinji's mental state, Rei Q's pondering, the different facets of Asuka - these are all concepts that have, and will, be explored. It's entirely possible that this stuff (the wandering, the split) happened post-3.0, but as for now it's probably not canon.
Stuff like the designs of the Adams and the skeletons in the FOIs are almost definitely canon, though - the short was made by an animator and presumably overlooked by Anno, so I'd assume the designs and concepts were approved by him.

I just had a thought.
What if the last shot in this short of Quantum Rei and Shinji walking away is the last shot in Final? Would make sense because Quantum Rei isn't called a Bookend Rei for nothing.
Oh god no closure here it comes.

I give Bookend Rei 50/50.

Quantum Rei's absence would work pretty well with the Rebuilds' themes, I think. Anno said somewhere that he didn't mean for Evangelion to be one of the very fantasies he criticized, to be obsessed about, all that jazz ; "I created Mari to destroy Eva", 2.0 speaking for itself, etc. 3.0 is even more direct, clearly stating that looking back on the past leads nowhere, and well, I think you know what I'm getting at at this point. Bookend Rei is one of the show's trademarks, and Anno wants you to move on with it and stop claiming that Rei is your waifu. Trust me, my father works at studio khara.

Which is kinda normal since so far they only have the past to look when acting toward him, since he completely disappeared for the past 14 years.

Seriously, that is the most fananked theory I've ever heard, more than Mari being Marty McFly travelling through time to keep her parents (Asushin) together. -- Jäeger

^
He made it extremely ambiguous so it's impossible to tell for sure what they really think or feel, confusing both Shinji and the audience, which was exactly the reaction he expected.

Huh, surprised this wasn't posted yet: http://neweva.blog103.fc2.com/blog-entry-3535.html
If I'm understanding all this properly:
Hayashibara talking about Until You Come to Me. She mentioned how she's been participating in these shorts alongside Yamadera since this short was just music ("Huh? What's this? What do you mean?"), and that streaming this short definitely seemed like it was towards Eva fans only.
She also discussed how Eva's seen at different angles at trade fairs (that's what Animator Expo is, no?) and that in her opinion, entertainment isn't always meant to be fun.
According to Eva Fan, based on Hayashibara's manner of speaking, another Eva short related to the main story (NTE in this case??), like a completely separate "derivative-version Eva" is possible. He speculates maybe it'd have to do with that 3D CG Eva-like mecha from the PV (the "Black Evangelion").
tl;dr:

- *Until You Come to Me is a derivative work (So...Peaceful Times too?).
*HYPE for another eventual Eva short in the future? Personally, my money's on the last Expo short being a FINAL preview, if anything. But there could be at least 1 more derivative work Eva story, since 30 shorts total are planned.

It's very surprising to see that an interview was done on UYCTM.
This gives us a little hint on what is to come, and it seems like so far my prediction may be correct about the Black Evangelion being the teaser of the 3.0+1.0 teaser. Teaser-ception.
As I said before and still stand by it, it will likely be one of the last shorts to come out from the Expo or be the last short. Anno has said he will return to NTE when the Expo is done with.
@SSD Are we allowed to call dibs on making future threads? Because I think I should be the one to make the thread on the next possible Eva short.
Now that I ask this watch UYCTM to be the only Evangelion short.

Heh, thread-creation's pretty much up for grabs around here. I know I tend to post news as often as I do since I check Twitter a few times a day.
That thought did cross my mind too, though, about UYCTM being the only Eva short in Animator Expo. Wouldn't surprise me, but I hope there's at least one more on the way--even if it's not a FINAL preview.

^ At the very least it is nice to start to see other people besides myself acknowladge the fact that "Hey there is the Black Evangelion Unit-02 looking thing from the Animator Expo, wonder what it could be...?"
Also if it turns out to be the Final preview we are all hoping for, well then great I would've been right all along. But if it isn't and just another kinda spin-off thing about Eva, that's cool too. Not for nothing that CGI looks very realistic on par with the FF7 movie, something never before seen in Evangelion. Whatever it turns out to be I will actually bet money on the fact that it will be awesome in one way or another, Shin preview or not.
2015 is the Year of Evangelion, so we have a lot to expect from it in all forms and from NGE and NTE, as this first month has shown us.

I don't mind it being derivative, although I would like to see some imagery being explained in interviews or re-used in FINAL (namely, what was up with those four ADAMS/NGE!Eva-01 with and the spears?)
