Ok, this looks fun. Let's see how many flames I get.
  • FLCL. A good show for sure, but not the masterpiece everyone makes it to be. But hey, at least we got a few good shots of a FIAT 126.

  • Gunbuster? The first half was too silly for his own good, and the last episode was trying too hard to be dramatic. The physics of space travel were interesting, though.

  • I'd quote Eva Monkey about Cowboy Bebop. Definitely watchable, but I don't see what's so special about it.

  • I call myself a Shinbo fan, but I can't stand Bakemonogatari. Blasphemy! I mean, his adaption of SZS is ridiculously good, the first episode of Le Portrait de Petit Cossette is as close as perfect as we'll ever get, and he even managed to make Negima funny enough to watch. But Bakemonogatari is just too fanservicey and irremediably boring, while his direction got unbearable. ADHD? I gave up on watching the following -monogatari series. Hell, even the recent (and widely panned) Mekakucity Actors was more fun to watch.

  • The first episode of Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is the greatest single episode in the history of everything ever. Fact. Futsuu...

  • I don't really understand the huge popularity of Azumanga Daioh. It's not bad by any means, but it was just... too ordinary. I'm spoiled by SZS, I guess. I'd rank Lucy Star as more interesting, Nichijou as funnier, and Pani Poni Dash! as... SHAFTer.

  • I can't get enough of Seitokai Yakuindomo. I know it's disgustingly stupid and incredibly repetitive, but I just can't help it.

  • Revolutionary Girl Utena is the manliest TV anime ever. I'm not sure how I managed to get through the first few episodes, but I'd be a lesser man if I didn't. I have to thank LiLi for that.

  • ...and J.A. Seazer's soundtrack is the best anime soundtrack I've ever experienced. Yoko Kanno? Cowboy Be-what? Don't make me laugh.

  • Mawaru Penguindrum is one of the most ambitious shows of the decade. Definitely harder to understand and appreciate than Utena, though.

  • Boogiepop Phantom has the greatest SFX direction in the history of anime, but you need a good pair of headphones to appreciate it. Oh, and the story isn't actually confusing once you learn the basics of the Boogiepop universe.

  • Serial Experiments Lain is quite good, but I didn't find it that interesting. It feels like most of the real phenomena and technologies the series talks about (Schumann resonances, Memex, Project Xanadu, ...) were just thrown around to make the writers look knowledgeable. Bonus points for mentioning IPv6, though!

  • The Wings of Honneamise is the greatest late '80 anime movie. (...Akira? What?) These days they just don't make rocket launch sequences like they used to.

  • Attack on Titan might not be the greatest show ever, but it was quite good after all. I've seen worse shows being more hyped than that.

  • Mamiko Noto's voice is a miracle of the universe, but she just can't sing.

View Original PostShamsiel-kun wrote:Things I hated about MSG (the movies. I haven't seen the series and don't plan to, seeing how tedious watching the movies was):
- Certainly not the best animation for its times. Even in the movies, which were partially reanimated, the QUALITY is often present.
- Excessively slowly moving story, especially during what I'd call "Tominoisms". If it was this grating in the movies, I just don't want to know how bad it was in the original series, with its 150 episodes. :vomit_duo:
- The spiritual segments with Lala. Gods, make them stop (to be honest, I also hated the bits with Flay in Seed :XP: ).
- Boneheaded decisions by about everyone, that only make sense if the plot was written without bothering with common sense.

Now Seed suffers from a lot of recycled animation, but at least it generally looks good. The music's quite good too. Seed Destiny is rather worse, especially the first half, but once Kira/Lacus comes back it gets a lot better (except for Athrun's character rape).

You have to show me QUALITY from the MSG movies. I'm waiting. In the meantime here are some screenshots of the show you think looks good.

For a different perspective. If you're only going to allow a story to be told once, or one way, there'd be precious little new to amuse us any more. But then, I didn't suggest that Angel Beats! was in any way comparable in quality with Haibane Renmei, now did I?

Funny, considering what great lengths Utena goes to show us how much of social construct the general idea of gender is; and how destructive this idea can be.

View Original Postath wrote:[*] ...and J.A. Seazer's soundtrack is the best anime soundtrack I've ever experienced. Yoko Kanno? Cowboy Be-what? Don't make me laugh.

I like Kanno, she's good in composing placid pop, but J.A. Seazer is a different league.

[*] Mawaru Penguindrum is one of the most ambitious shows of the last decade. Definitely harder to understand and appreciate than Utena, though.

I really need to rewatch that one. I'm so excited for Yuri Kuma, btw.

Yes, this series is an aural treat. What a shame the visuals suffered greatly from too little budget.

Of course not, I'm just a little bit sad, that Angel Beat gets so much love, while Haibane Renmei seems to fly under the radar for most people. I mean, Angel Beats had some great (sometimes unintentional) comedy, but the script was a mess which destroyed its potential.

Thank God I read the novels first. But yes, this series is a little-known treasure.

I completely agree! I really don't like Gunbuster at all.

I don't have 6 hours to waste this week, (un)fortunately. But if one were to hold a drinking game and count every single time the mecha show up on screen in ways that only someone on LSD would call "stylized"*, no-one would make it past the first hour alive.

Frankly, it's not surprising it got canceled back in the day.

* 1980s stylization is a difficult topic, but for a studio that does it the right way (a.k.a. looking cool, not like a garbage can that had an encounter with a car compactor), look no further than Ashi Production (e.g. Dancouga).

Oh, and those examples of QUALITY in Gundam Seed? Try harder (there is much worse in the series, BTW), right now you are just positioning yourself as disliking the "snoutface" style of character design.

After a day's hard work I don't feel like wasting my time on something that by all means is so blindingly obvious. Besides, this topic is like arguing with a Jehova Witness - entirely useless because the other party is so entrenched in his convictions (or perhaps we are both entitled to our opinion).

Also, Kira is much better than Amuro (I kid  )

I don't really have to try hard with SEED though. You can go to any episode and get eye cancer.

Wow, that's exactly how I feel about the original Mobile Suit Gundam! At least we agree on something!

But Jesus Kira is my favourite Seed character

I'm always open to see the other side, nor do I want to change your opinion. After all, this is a topic about controversial opinions. So far what I have done is disprove your theory that nostalgia is blinding people and I asked you to show me what part of the MSG movies you find so offensive that's worse than what I have shown you in SEED. I don't want to press any further though. You are free to praise your lord and savior.

Agreed so fucking much. Also Noriko is the best girl in the universe.

Anyway, opinion time. (And yes these are all honest opinions that I hold.)

BRS 2012 was honestly not that bad a show. It had its iffy moments but overally it was harmless fun.

The GitS movie was incomprehensible pretentious drivel, and I have no idea why it's as well liked as it is.

Sailor Moon Crystal is an absolute mess with hideous character designs, shoddy animation, poor writing and horrible horrible CGI transformation scenes, and it is a disgrace to the franchise.

Sailor Jupiter/Makoto Kino is the best girl.

End of Evangelion is a gigantic shit upon Neon Genesis Evangelion that pisses all over the characters (especially Shinji), totally destroys the perfect original ending, and should be considered entirely non-canon.

Asuka is objectively the worst girl in NGE. Rei X Shinji is the only true pairing.

Hetalia honestly isn't all that bad.

Kill la Kill was amazing but would have benefitted from more blood, some actual sex, and more "filler" episodes to get us to know the characters better. Also Mako best girl.

Strike Witches is fuckawful pedoshit.

My sheer endlessly blinding nostalgia well has run dry too... It really is bad. Oh, why did that have to happen?

Nobody likes it, unless you're talking Ultimate.
Oh, but don't disgrace the OST of the first Hellsing series, that OST is so gorgeously moody, it brings me back, when I was 14 and watched it secretly at 10pm.

Like Robersora said, Ultimate or Original? Honestly, I like both-- there are elements of each that outweigh the other, I think. Although if I had to choose, I think I actually like the original better.
