^I theorise that if it's not FINAL itself then it will be a movie that will catch up on the events between 2.0 and 3.0, and explain some stuff/exposition, much like the Science Lesson.

Well, as much as I actually did point out that possibility, I should note that I hold all of that very loosely. There is absolutely no way I’m going to allow myself to get excited for a movie that Khara certainly never announced. The only thing I’d go as far as to speculate with any sort of optimistic hope is that the “You __ (Not) __” title might be replaced with “Final,” or “Evangelion Final.” And even then that’s small change in compared to whatever else Anno might be doing with Shin. (I like Reichu’s conclusion on the usage of that title so far.) Beyond that, I will only believe that Khara is doing a fifth movie if and when they announce they are doing a fifth movie. And the title of Shin is really a poor indicator that there will be an extra movie, since none was even discussed by Khara that we know of.

What’s more important, I feel, is the connection to the “X+X” forms of identification running rampant in Shin so far. I really doubt that it was accidental that “Eva 3.0+1.0” and "Eva Unit 8+2” share the addition signs in their titles. This theme of addition might be really important to Shin, especially since the Eva franchise’s last grand finale, The End of Evangelion, dealt more with subtraction. (“It all returns to nothing...”)

But actually, the web page on the Eva site is still called Final.html, even though the contents have changed. :p

I have an awful lot of trouble thinking the final movie will be called 3.0 + 1.0; that doesn't fit with the existing scheme at all, and I suspect it is a placeholder, subtitle, or something similar that will be clarified later on (in favor of Shin, perhaps).

But who knows. Perhaps Anno's channeling Gunbuster after all.

Yeah, that is true. That's why I'm a bit skeptical as to the finality of the title (well, in concert with the above, anyway).

Maybe. Gunbuster had two female pilots because it was a combination of Buster Machine #1 and Buster Machine #2, and Eva Unit 8+1 is a combination of the Units 08 and 02. It could be that it will also have two female pilots (Mari and Asuka), making even a clearer and more grounded call back to Gunbuster.

Even so, I do see where your skepticism comes from. The title is weird, though I personally don’t think a breaks away from the scheme, as it still uses “X.0” as a title. I honestly thought the film would never be called “4.0.” For whatever reason that always seemed stupid to me. And the whole “X+X” titles for both the film and the Eva Unit strike me as important, so I’m not ready to say that “Eva 3.0+1.0” is a temporary title just yet.

We’ll see what happens when Shin comes out, though.

Boy, I hope we get a official subtitle and English translation for Shin soon!

Indeed, it's a very clever theory, and ties very well with the traditional Japanese storytelling structure that Rebuild follows in spirit.

It also suggests the possibility of our deciding to use the name KyuuJo for the new film, to be consistent with calling the others Jo, Ha, and Q.
