I don't remember where I read this, but there was a statement somewhere talking about how Mari hatred was mostly from people that considered Shinji, Rei, and Asuka to be the only legitimate pilots. They phrased it as 1.0 setting up Shinji and Rei as pilots, and 2.0 merely introducing two new pilots instead of "reuniting the original cast with an extra character".
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

I don't usually pay attention to this stuff mostly because I think it's fucking stupid to think a certain storyboard outside of the final product is even semi-canon but I just found out in a early storyboard Asuka and Mari were going to dual pilot Unit 02 in 2.0, perhaps they changed it to the final movie?

I just had this thought about Mari -- we so far have absolutely no reason given (in universe) why she's even a Makinami, rather than, say, a McInerny. But then the same could be said of Shikinami not being a Schicklgruber, in this new world order.

Plot twist: She's Asuka's half sister from Asuka's stepmother and father.
(I don't say that with serious intentions since that would mean she would be much younger than Asuka and since we don't know the status of Asuka's parents...but it's an interesting thought I guess)

No, but the official site confirms that she's still part-German, and her boxes in 2.0 are labeled "DHL", which is a company which fused with "Deutsche Post", a German courier company. (and the largest in the world)

Silly idea, like really really silly. What if Mari is Shinji and Asuka? Kinda like a fusion of sorts. And like they did the whole traveling back in time thing trying to fix shit and that's why everything is a little different. Like the reason Shikinami is different from Soryu is because they stopped Asuka's mom from committing suicide?
