Read volume 1 of Mazinger Z.

It's not exactly a masterpiece, but it's entertaining, and for what it is (a kid's comic from the early 70s) it's pretty good. It has a really nice retro feel to it. Also, it's the first mecha manga ever (Tetsujin 28 doesn't really count as big T is more a remote control robot than a mecha) so it's kinda necessary reading.

Also, Kouji seems to be awfully genre savvy.

Read Berserk volume 14.

FUN as usual. Also, the "prototype" was pretty cool.

EVANGELION VOL.2___
- like the art more than i did in the first volume
- damn Shinji is a spiteful suicidal asshole in the manga
- don't like that nerv had a problem with Shinji letting the boys in the plug
- wish Misato had not slapped him regardless, as that is a blemish on her not him
- the smile on ritsuko's face when she says goodbye to Shinji seems odd... almost cruel, but at the same time kinda knowing like she is predicting that he might stay after all
- lol when Misato gets up to go to work on the day Shinji is supose to leave, pen pen's face is priceless, his head swings around, all like "NO please don't leave me alone again"
Image
- love the pen pen origin and Misato telling Shinji that she does in fact care about him, that whole scene was MUCH more effective than the staredown of the series in establishing there bond and the attachment they have developed for each other
- "i thought it might be nice to have a family" OMG i love and feel for this woman so much!
- "ive aways lived alone" hmmmm, Kaji?
- Shinji's Face when he slowly tears up after Misato shows that she cares is drawn flawlessly, some of the most emotional art ive eve seen in a manga

Whatever you think of the story (and it happens I'm a fan), no one can deny that Sadamoto is a damn good artist!

absolutely agree when i read the first volume the art didn't do much for me, might be the staticness of it compared to the animation, but volume 2 and going back to vol.1 afterwards look great

No objections here. Seeing his designs in greater detail than the original anime would allow is fantastic.

A blog recommended this manga. And goddamn, it was freaking awesome. I really don't want to spoil anything. It's like getting hit by a bus after looking in both directions. Just read this one-shot! It was published in 2013, so I don't think we'll be getting an actual serialization. I'd definitely read this if it were a series though.

I started reading Oyasumi Punpun because everyone raves about how emotional it is, but so far it's just rather unsettling looking characters and the main character is a bird and no one seems to notice. Is this supposed to be symbolic?

^ I've been interested in the manga of Inio Asano. I hear pretty much the same thing, that his works are "very emotional" and "realistic" in how the characters are portrayed. I guess I'll have to read and judge it for myself at some point. From what I've seen of the style of art, he at least seems to counter the norm in terms of manga/anime character designs.

I recently started reading the women's MMA manga Teppuu. While I find the parts where they explain the MMA techniques and stuff to be boring, I do like it overall. The manga's art improves over time, as is usually the case, and chapter 23 (The End of the World, which is also my favorite chapter so far) in particular can be considered muscle chick fetish porn. It looks really good. I also like that the main character, Natsuo, is the type of person who would usually be an antagonist in some shounen manga. She's mean and her motivation is that she wants to beat up a girl who "has everything." The character she is intent on defeating is like a shounen manga's protagonist. She loves fighting and it's the most fun thing ever to her. She doesn't have any malicious intent, rather, she is quite friendly. But people think of her as "creepy." So, that's the main reason I like this manga. The main character is a jerk. A tall, muscular, damn fine-looking jerk who wants to beat up a cheerful young girl. You'll understand why she is the way she is when the manga gets to exploring her background though.
So far, 7/10.

Thanks to this post and the recomendation Meerkat made at the manga recomendation page I read Oyasumi Punpun, Solanin and Nijigahara Holograph in the space of three days. Talk about an interesting experience! Solanin is the standard "transition into adulthood manga" but done right. Nijigahara Holograph is well, I don´t really know. I mean, I know more or less what happened(even if the manga felt a bit unecessarily convulted at times) but I don´t know what message I´m supposed to take from it. Things repeat themselves?

Oyasumi Punpun is a masterpiece. Hell, Punpun might be my favorite protagonist of any anime or manga! I was kind of hoping that a certain "something" would be revealed at the ending, but I undertand why the Mangaka didn´t show it.

The awesome anthology manga Nickelodeon (no relation to the American cartoon channel) apparently ended a bit early because the publisher is out of business or something. At least 38 chapters (compiled in 3 volumes) were published. It's probably my favorite manga that I've read to completion. Each chapter is about 8 or 9 pages long and it's kind of like Twilight Zone in modern manga form. And because of the episodic format I'm not too disappointed that it ended. It didn't feel abrupt, since there's no overarching plot (some characters do appear throughout the series though, but you don't have to read any of the chapters that came before a particular chapter in order to get what's going on). Most (maybe all) of the stories have some M. Night Shamalan-esque twist that doesn't feel contrived because they're only 9 pages long and the manga doesn't take itself too seriously.

Just read the first chapter. It ends with a girl starting a relationship with a tiger at the zoo. That talks. But only at night. He convinces her to not commit suicide. And that's one of the more mundane of the stories. I think a better introduction to Nickelodeon would be these two chapters:
Poohta's Forest and Funny Game.

I think my personal favorite is Delinquent Drinker. A girl wishes for her friend's saliva to become alcohol. It does, so she and the other girls in their class make out with her to taste the alcohol and get drunk. Why do I like it the most? Because girls making out and getting drunk off of it. Could there be a deeper meaning to it? Probably not.

But the best one (not including ones that cater to my confused adolescent fetishes) is probably Contract.

Koe no Kitachi 54: So much WAFF! Finally, we get to the big payoff. I wish I knew what Nishimiya said, but even so the scene was great. And having the ladies there at the end . . . priceless!

I've reached page 20, and it's not holding my interest. Is there some big payoff I'm waiting for? You gave it such high praise.
