Yes, there's a superstition (that's why they say "yon" rather than "shi") but it's not a reason they'd do that. The number 4 shows up everywhere in Japanese products and people don't get too caught up about it. I really doubt that's why they call it that.

That is true -- you'll see many older buildings that don't have the 4th floor. The numbers will go from 3rd to 5th.
I thought 8 is a lucky number in China? (The opposite of what you said)

Yep, 8 is a homophone for "rich" in Chinese and a lucky number. Unlike the Japanese, the Chinese do not have a substitute for "yon" and pronounce 4 as "si" (death), which makes 4 a number to stay away from.
I don't buy the "4 is death" argument here either. If he's really going to call it 3.0 + 1.0 and not 4.0, it's not because of superstition, but due to whatever thematic reset he has in mind.

I popped into this topic near the end and got excited and started reading over from the first post of the current year in here and by the end I was like "Wait wait wait, all this over a few words on a paper lantern?"
