Just picked this up around the corner at the local music store when I went to pickup some blank 12" record jackets:



A really interesting album, not the least having Oscar Pettiford playing bass. Most of the songs are Jazz/Blues renditions of either Milt Jackson's or Ray Charles' compositions, but the most interesting thing is that Milt Jackson not only plays the usual vibes, but also plays piano and guitar, while Ray Charles plays the usual piano as well as alto saxophone; sometimes switching to several instruments during the course of a song. Real interesting to hear how Milt Jackson can take a bluesy Ray Charles song and turn it into Jazz while Ray Charles takes a Milt Jackson tune and turn it into a blues.

Well, not all of them were $1, the Burrell/Coltrane and Head Hunters weren't a dollar, and Head Hunters is a high demand LP. Head Hunters contains probably one of the most recognizable funk tunes of all time.

The Benny Goodman and the Jimmy Dorsey (there's actually also a Tommy Dorsey LP not in the picture) were just $1 ones that I added in because shipping was free.

Tijuana Brass is a great group, always reminds me of Casino Royale, and it's a great fall back for playing at Cinco de Mayo parties when the people there aren't hardcore enough for Larry Hernandez.

The Chick Corea "The Leprechaun" LP was a total steal, vinyl is in perfect condition but the jacket is a lttle worn. As hilarious as the jacket art is, the album is actually really awesome, especially if you're into synth.

"Sports" being obviously Huey Lewis' best album, but I think "Picture This" may be my second favorite. It's so corny but it's what I listened to in the 80's.

The Ahmad Jamal trio is also a great LP. Ahmad Jamal, being one of the best and most technically proficient Jazz pianists (most people know him for Ahmad's Blues, which was one of the tracks of Miles Davis' "Workin'" album). His best recordings (including the track on "Workin'") has always been in trios, mostly likely because of the freedom you get, allowing him to flex his technique.

Kenny Burrell's a pretty good guitarist, has a lot of recordings until his belt, but isn't one of those that really stand out as far as Jazz guitarists go. He's not a Joe Pass, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, or Pat Martino, but his stuff is still very worth listening to, especially anything live.

The "Secrets" album was just one of those throw-ins because it was cheap. It's the 70's era of Herbie Hancock but it's not nearly as good as Head Hunters.

Hey Bard, I just listened to all of Mixed Up, it was pretty damn good, excellent taste bro.

Surprisingly things have been pretty lax for me music-wise the past couple of months (with exception to Swans). Not really been listening to much new stuff outside a couple of releases from earlier in the year, i.e. Nothing, Kurt Vile, Cloud Nothings, New Lows, so on, so forth. I've actually been acquiring some older stuff too, discographies to explore. Namely the Pixies and Depeche Mode. Been thinking about the band Ceremony a lot as well. I should probably get around to giving their two more recent albums another go, as I was initially pretty anti-receptive of them, unfairly so maybe.

I've pretty much banished all traces of Muse from my collection at this point, I don't know why I did it, but it feels good not listening to New Born on repeat.

GridLink - Longhena: still my favourite album of 2014. I raved about Longhena here.

Falls of Rauros / Panopticon split: I've never found Falls of Rauros to be anything too special, but their side on this split is surprisingly impressive. Panopticon's side, on the other hand, is surprisingly straightforward black metal (and very good, I may add). After the band's recent experimentations with folk music and post-rock, I wasn't expecting something quite like this from the band, though.

Current 93 - I Am the Last of All the Field That Fell: This is quite possibly my favourite Current 93 release of the 00s. David Tibet is once again back to his flamboyant self after 2011's quiet and calm HoneySuckle Æons. I find Tibet's vocals and lyrics to be the most enjoyable when he's raving and ranting like a lunatic. The list of quest artists is also, once again, pretty amazing: Nick Cave, James Blackshaw, John Zorn, Andrew Liles, and Reinier Van Houdt, to name a few.

Street Sects - The Morning After We Raped Death: Relentless noise / punk. Pay-what-you-want.

Frail Vessel - Frail Vessel: Mecha inspired grindcore. Pay-what-you-want.

Marissa Nadler - July: My current favourite singer-songwriter. I'm always drawn to this kind of very dark and melancholic folk music, and her voice is absolutely gorgeous.

Secret Creation - Holding My Carrot: If any label other than Colloquial Sound Recordings (or maybe Handmade Birds) released something titled "Holding My Carrot", I would most likely skip the release entirely. However, knowing CSR's track record with other amazing oddball black metal bands such as A Pregnant Light, Aksumite, and Dressed in Streams, I decided to give it a listen, and it's pretty great though it ends far too quickly. Stream.

Teitanblood - Death: Filthy black/death metal from Spain. Their debut album, Seven Chalices (2009), is one of my favourite metal releases of the last few years, and Death is as good a sophomore album as there is.

Nadja - Tangled: Usually Nadja do 20+ minute long drone metal songs, but this time they put out an EP full of one to two-minute catchy and noisy punk/metal tracks. Stream.

Ben Frost - A U R O R A: Nothing that Ben Frost has done before or after Theory of Machines has been on par with the ambiance of that album in my opinion, but A U R O R A is a very enjoyable album of noisy electronic music in its own right. Some of the moments on this album, such as the last few minutes of Secant, are absolutely brilliant.

Crutches - Lurad: A new, heavy as tits d-beat band from Sweden. Pay-what-you-want.

"Speak Low", from the Fraternity release " The Fabulous Jimmy Dorsey", F-1008, side 1 track 4.

Released in 1957, well after the era of big bands, Jimmy Dorsey didn't want to cut the record, saying to Harry Carlson of Fraternity Records, "Why fool around with a has-been?" But people said that this was the first bigband hit in 15 years, and Guy Lombardo said that this record would bring back the bigband business.

Unfortunately, Jimmy Dorsey, in poor health, died before all the sides were cut and Dick Stabile (as requested by Jimmy) came in to record his sax parts after the funeral.

Later, Dick Stabile went on to say that it was the greatest recording date of his life.

it's only somewhat ironic i come onto an anime forum to talk about Tool, but then again, not really since i'm only dumb :3

-No, I haven't had the opportunity to see them live (they're definitely on my list of "bands I have to see live in my lifetime").

-Hey, these things take time...especially when you're this far out in prog territory. The wait between Lateralus and 10,000 Days was maddening, but oh so worth it. I have faith that the band will deliver (after all, every other album's been nothing short of great).

-A funny inside joke, but also not the worst idea for a belief system. Makes more sense than some that actually exist, too.

It's not that weird. I'm kinda 50/50 when it comes to discussing Evangelion and music.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Trouble: Something I've turned up on one of my current house and electronica binges; Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is the ridiculous moniker of the almost equally ridiculously named UK producer Orlando Tobias Edward Higginbottom. Higginbottom croons over the top of sophisticated beats and synthesizes, engaging effectively in soft-falsettos with musical styles ranging from dance-orientated club stoppers ('Your Love') to more laid-back ambient flavoured pieces (a la titular track 'Trouble'), all filled with the kind of melancholic rhythms that make you want to go out all-night only to dance alone in your head. Trouble definitely isn't a showy album. Instead, Higginbottom is sensible with his cuts and the whole thing has a more introverted, insular feel to it. Exactly my kind of music, especially when it comes to electronic stuff.

'Tapes & Money' would have be the stand-out song for me.

I'm in pretty much in love. I've listened to his Wheel when it came out all day long, but then pretty much forgot about him. Then I coincidently saw an advertisement for his concert and thought "Why not checking this out, huh?" And it was glorious; he can really sing and it amazes me to hear someone being able to bring that kind of music live to the stage, without just pressing the play button.
You really should give it a listen.
Bloodflows starts off slowly, but emerges in a wonderful cathartic last third.
Artifice might be his most streamlined song, but I really love it so far.

(also love the visual aesthetic he has going through all his stuff... awe-inspiring nature feeling slightly off, or something)

Also, I've gotten the hang of Death Grips. I really cannot say, what exactly draws me to their music, it just works... They certainly seem to have the X-factor.

Dire Straits- Love Over Gold: Just picked up an old but cosmetically good copy of this, and now I can finally experience Telegraph Road on vinyl. My God, is it glorious.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros- Up From Below: There is something about their odd , sad lyrics that just works. Really damn well, too. Honorable mentions to the first three songs on the album for being so easy to sing along to.

George Harrison- All Things Must Pass: Wow, and I thought Wings were good. The last track on side 4 is beautiful, (Hear Me Lord) something that may have never happened if the Beatles didn't split. (Wow, hope it didn't sound like I was badmouthing the Beatles...)
