Oh, I'm being very serious. I watched it all in one sitting the first time and had a good time noting the differences.

View Original PostOrnette wrote:It's different both times, because the climax/finale from the original broadcast isn't the chronological finale, which happens at the end of the 2009 version. Watch both if you want, but I think the mixed up version from 2006 was an experience in and of itself. Having 3 years between seeing those episodes then watching them again made it seem fresh. Dunno if that'll be the case if you go straight to the 2009 version after marathoning the original.

I was concerned about losing the interest in the renewal after knowing the "plot twist" but since the experience of the renewal doesn't seem to mainly aim for the reveal of the twist and the unchronological order seems to be essential and is quite appealing to me, I'll go with watching the renewal a couple of weeks after the original show.

Thanks for the help ^_^

Me too! Endless 8 is very enjoyable imo. I re-watch all 8 episodes at once every time I re-watch my DVD and point out the differences (aside from the clothes). Its fun~

Also, maybe its just me, but I think the 8 episodes have random animation quality jumps :lol:

If you guys don't mind me asking. Why do people like Haruhi Suzumiya so much? I mean I find the show entertaining, but why do people keep claiming it's a masterpiece?

I suppose I'll finally have to get around to watching "disappearance" one of these days.

Also. KYON! Just ask her out already!

I never really got all the love Haruhi received either. It might be the Bakemonogatari-effect. Taking tropes and load it with cool twists to the max. (The jumbled way of airing the Episodes, Meoblops with character, the ending).

But yes. Everybody should watch the Disappearance. While I'd give the series a good 6 or 7, the movie is one of the best movies to come out in recent years.

Which part was unintelligible?

I just said, that Haruhi might have been so popular because it took a lot of Otaku-beloved Anime-tropes but used it in a good way, or morphed it. It was familiar yet new, which might explain, why everybody loved it. I like to call that the Bakemonogatari-effect, since the Monogatari-series also took beloved pulp of a concept (Harem-series) but made something new with it.
The difference (for me at least) is, that while it worked with Monogatari, Haruhi never quite clicked with me until I've watched the disappearance.

But all of this was just a thesis of my subjective perception.

While I do enjoy the show, by no means do I consider it a masterpiece. To be honest, I don't know why I enjoy it haha? I suspect that Kyon's negative outlook on life and random puns he made throughout his daily routine kept me entertained (having a similar outlook on life at that time), so it kept me coming back.

It's also rare for an anime to have good 'replay value' for me, I must have re-watched it at least 10 time (no lie). At one point, I remember I made it a ritual to re-watch the remote island syndrome every summer break for like 3 years :lol: -o-;

It's an easy going story with just enough variety to the slice of life genre to keep you coming back. I find it refreshing to have these shows in between all the shonen crap with overpowered 13-year-olds saving the world :rolleyes: Add in the fact that most episodes start a case and provide closure to it by the end of the 20minutes, plus the random time skips to different outdoor seasons in between episodes, and I have myself a show that doesn't bore me into oblivion with the same setting for hours.

And yes, the movie is a good watch--very different tone form the series

I think it's beloved for several reasons. Kyon's narration is pretty hilarious with his ultra sarcasm. It does feature a lot of genre tropes, but it doesn't dwell on them. For example, Mikuru's shyness/hotness doesn't become the sole focal point of the series. It is "slice of life" but it isn't because the show has an actual story. The story is really cool. The animation is really good. The songs are catchy. I could go on. Compared to the vast ocean of shit that comprises most anime, Haruhi is god-tier*.

Eheheh, that was good.
But what you said pretty much sums it up. Might I add that it would also have been not as enjoyable if another character had these God-Like powers; that is all part of the appeal as well. Because Haruhi is such an un-predictive and interesting character the amount of crazy scenarios that the author can (and has) come up with is quite high, whereas if someone like Mikuru was given the powers, it would have been a fanservice snore-fest. (although, "The Adventures Of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00" was just hilarious). Characters like her fortunately work really well in the supporting cast and balance out the protagonists. That being said, the universe that it takes place in, although suffering slightly from a couple of tropes and archetypes, provides a good supporting backdrop for these crazy adventures that Kyon has to endure. It just works. (Mostly)

Out of curiousity, what happened with Haruhi's Japanese VA? I hear she was fired for sleeping around or something? I hear there was a HUGE controversy surrounding her a few years back.

I believe she is working again. Prudish anime fans were upset that their potential love interest (Haruhi and by extension her voice actress) was having sex with someone other than them.

She reportedly had sex with all of her band members minus the bassist.

She's still working, but mostly just old roles in long series that are still on-going. Whatever new roles she gets these days always seem to be bit parts. It seems the scandal sorta killed her marketability since now they can't sell her as a "pure" idol VA to delusional otaku anymore.

Some people claim it's the reason why we haven't gotten any new Haruhi since Disappearance.

God that's hot. And that's supposed to make her less marketable?

Frickin' misogynistic purity fetishization.

-o-; -o-; -o-;

I think its more of a taboo in Japan for women to bang that many men--unlike in the West, where that's the best type of publicity

It would be funny if the whole band died of aids except the bassist ^_^

Nothing is hotter than a woman who embraces her sexuality. Y'hear that ladies? Don't be embarrassed to take the initiative in the bedroom.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Have you guys seen this?

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-05-31/1st-new-haruhi-suzumiya-video-in-4-years-promotes-pachinko-game/.75085

http://haruhi.com/

It's some sort of Pachinko Game being promoted by Haruhi. Supposedly there are 707 frames scattered across Japan and fans need to collect them all (I suppose by taking pictures). Then when all 707 are put together, a new Haruhi video will become available produced by Kyoto Animation themselves.

Interesting, I wonder if it's a hint for a S3 maybe? ...nah -o-;
