I just saw the first 5 episodes of Ano Hana.

I am currently so :asuka_sad:. Not sad per se, but sentimental. It's one of those stories that speaks directly on my wavelength what with its fetishization of summer and in particular the emotionality of the end of summer.

Makes me wish I had a secret base out in the woods with a bunch of male and female friends I could have grown up with and shared that many interests with. :( But then again, people meet people every day they feel like they've always known because they have so much in common.

While waiting between episodes of Kill la Kill I've been going through NieA under 7. I'm not quite finished yet, and will comment properly when I have (at the end of the weekend - I'm going away for the next couple of days). But after a long period when there has been little sign that the series has any plot at all (let alone that the title character might have any real importance), up comes a whole episode in which NieA herself has gone missing, and somehow the world has changed a little.
"Being human, having your health; that's what's important." (from: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi )
"As long as we're all living, and as long as we're all having fun, that should do it, right?" (from: The Eccentric Family )

Got to watch Blazing Transfer Student. It's a two part OVA manga adaptation by 90s Gainax, except that they made it look like some Ashita no Joe mock-up with the heavy use of tick lines, stock footage and Go Nagai-esque sideburn character designs. The plot is one nonsensical gag parody from every fighting cliche you can ever find. It is not as wild as Kill la Kill but I found it interesting in its obvious influence. If Trigger's work is that of a newly arrived tranfer student who renders homage for the old school-fighting genre, Honoo no Tenkousei is the 20 years elder senpai albeit on a much smaller scale. The hot-blooded protagonist is spoken by Senketsu too, and since they are both picking on the same sort of genre, Transfer Students' mangaka Shimamoto has done a crossover doujin just recently. Also nice touch hearing Hidaka Noriko in a classic Gunbuster-like role again.

Is it weird that I immediately associated it with Kill la Kill just by looking at the poster?

Speaking of which:

Kill la Kill Episode 19:

SPOILER: Show

Timeskips! Also it seems everyone who's not trapped by COVERS is now a Nudist, for better or for worse. I'm not sure if that makes the Elite Four more awesome or less awesome...

Also Ryuko is in her 'Wahhh I don't want to wear Senketsu waaahhh' mode again...it's getting a bit tiresome. Hopefully she'll come back to her senses next episode and the cycle will close. To be fair she's become the embodiment of awesome even without Senketsu by now.

The most interesting things in this episode were the 'ultimate Kamui Nui's building and the weird black toenail Satsuki was hiding.

Macross 7 extras were funner than the series. Dynamite especially, and fleet of the strongest women was hilarious. Glad they worked in sum ai oboete imasu ka too.

Watching Aquarion now. The CGI is definitely jarring but the music makes up for it.

I don't know, in the episode before she was going on about how close her and broketsu had become. Not even 15 waking minutes have gone by (granted they were extreme) and she hates him for something that neither her or senketsu have control over. Her character devolpment is going in circles. Even if it's understandable, it's irritating. It makes me feel like "Haven't we already seen this before?"

Also, I was planning to pick up Kara no Kyoukai within the next few weeks. How long is each individual installment? I'm looking for something to marathon. Think this'll be any good?
It's difficult in times like these; ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality.
It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical.
Yet I cling to them because I believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.

Movies 1-4 and 6 are 40 mins each, movies 5 and 7 are about 2 and a half hours long. They're my favorite series of animated films if that means anything.

Quad: You'll probably want to edit that post a bit, as the way it is now the KlK part looks like a response to Giji's post (which makes your non-spoilered text nonsensical).

So I tried watching the first episode of Chunibyo, and it failed to entice me. Should I try to get into it more?

It's pleasant enough, and OK until the end of the first series, but I wouldn't bother to try to persuade anyone to watch it who's not inclined to. IOW, you won't really miss anything.

I keep trying to convince myself to catch up on the second season, and I keep failing. That's telling IMO.

Golden Time ep. 19 - I was ecstatic that Banri and Koko were just about to make love but then the Eiffel Tower got in the way! The situation of Mitsuo liking Linda and asking Banri if anything happened between them was dramatic and all this secrecy will lead to ruin if not handled properly while Chinami's obvious jealousy adds to the fire. As for Chinami's new shorter haircut, I wouldn't say I despised it but I think she's much more kawaii with the long hair.

I really liked this too, though that comes as no surprise (I like Oshii in general).

SPOILER: Show
What do you make of the ending? Cynical? Ambiguous? The bit after the credits is giving me trouble too; Kusanagi greeting the replacement (ostensibly the clone, although how that works I'm not sure) in a warmer fashion would seem encouraging only because it's different from what happened the last time.

Whatever the answers to those questions may be, I'm a little down now. It's a separation sadness of a movie I liked, but couldn't rationalize some of the events within, not to the degree I'd like to anyway. If I give it some time I'll probably figure out whether those questions in the spoiler are even the ones worth asking or not. I'm a bit jumbled.

Even Innocence? I have a hard time liking GITS2. I felt more of a deep sense of appreciation than entertained or thought-provoked. The movie was bogged down dramatically by just too many flaws that could have been avoided with just a little less self-indulgence.

The ending is very interesting, as it solidified the anticipation I had. There was foreboding that they were in this kind of circle, but that Oshii spelled it out with so much dry humor conjured a smile on my face. I don't think the punchline was cynical... It somehow felt a little bit hopeful to me. Because no matter how much they fucked up, they could get it remotely right next time. As Kusanagi said, this war is a game.

BTW (This might be the only Oshii movie I know with a very good sense of humor. It never felt wrong or took away from the gravitas of the story. It just made everything a little bit laid back and thus more believable. Yes, the setting was nice).

This is very interesting, because all in all the movie felt incredibly straight forward to me (at least for a movie by Oshii). But please, don't hesitate to ask whatever questions, I certainly would not rule out the possibility that I've missed some important stuff!
