That confirms my assumption. There is of course an age in which you just aren't able to get the show.
How young is too young to see NGE?

I'd say most kids under 13, at least, are probably too young for Eva's occasionally graphic imagery and disturbing subject matter; and a lot of the emotional/psychological subtext is liable to simply go over a younger viewer's head, particularly if they have yet to hit puberty with full force.

Depends on the kid. I think what Doug Walker/Nostalgia Critic said on showing kids scary movies sums it up pretty well "something one 3 year old can watch with joy might make a 7 year old cover his eyes." A kid of 10 might be able to watch Eva and have a basic understanding of what's happening while someone of my age or older might go "what am I watching?" I showed my 7 year old nephew Rebuild and while he wasn't enthralled he still follow along somewhat, he even maneged to figure out that Gendo is up to something.

*sigh* Hilariously, I did get mistaken for her mom a couple of times, especially at the natatorium.
Which is especially weird considering that I was recently asked if I'm old enough to have a sundae with a little bit of eggnog on it....
About a year ago, I had to whip out my ID card to buy some musky perfume thing...

Yeah.
In part, they just understand more implications, but there are also instinctive reactions that only mature after a certain time.
You see these discrepancies a lot when you have a few shows who are watched by a larger margin of age groups, like, say, "Doctor Who" (It would never have occurred to me from just watching it, tho. Didn't seem any different than any other large scale Sci-Fi show. It was only when I heard what the typical demografic in its homeland looks like that I retroactively realized, "Oh, yes, there wasn't much actual blood and gore". But there might as well have been/didn't need to be, I mean, they had a chick burned to an ash outline, or turned into a robot slave with her brain reduced to jelly... Not to speak of the episode with the flesh-eating shadow creatures. Evisceration is boring. )
In any case, you'll have people arguing that XY is toop complicated or too scary, and then the writer will go, "Actually, my five year old figured it out immediately, I'm kind of embarassed." and people liking the show because they felt it took them seriously.
That's probably why anime got so popular in Europe at all, when all you have are american comics/cartoons who, despite the ocassional plot, are usually firmly rooted in the realm of the "funny and un-serious", and then get comfronted with something that actually gets you invested.
And I'm not talking anything really dramatic or adult-y here, just your average magical girl show or good old Digimon, that can actually make you cry.
There was that show where the magical girls in question were looking after a little baby, and in the end, had to give up their magical powers to save her and never saw her again... And the show ends with them entertaining a customer at their shop who has a similar baby with them.
I bawled, but this has held a special place in my heart ever since...
Knowledge of Genre-Conventions (which EVa has a lot of fun subverting after all) or lack thereof could also play a role, such as that whole Tsundere phenomenon.
With the afore mentioned middle sister, the fact that there was a love triangle (As opposed to just Rei and Kaworu in linear oder) went completely over her head, episode 11 poking ridiculous amounts of fun at it nonwithstanding.
It was the same with my first exposure; In my initial perception, Ranma and Akane just kept hating each other until the end of the series XD Or at most eventually arrived at a relationship vaguely like a "rough" male friendship. It just seemed to fit with Akane acting so boyish all the time.

My daughter saw EVA anime for the first time around 10 1/2, but she had read the mangas the year before (up to about Volume 8). I figured she was already a pretty experienced manga reader so EVA wouldn't freak her out much at all and that proved to be the case.
Turns out she rather liked the series and had good observations about it even at her age. One of her favorite parts of EVA was how your perspective of Asuka changes over the course of the show and she liked how that was portrayed. Also for a year or so she had a serious crush on Kaworu.
I did have one restriction on her and that was she was not to watch EoE until she was twelve: I just considered it too violent for any one younger. She was okay with that and we did an "EVA Party Weekend" where shortly after her 12th B-Day we watched EoE and then played both Girlfriend of Steel 1 and 2.

She was pretty low-key throughout the film. My daughter wasn't new to anime so having seen other stuff like Escaflone and Twelve Kingdoms she didn't flinch at the violence. Her general comment was that it didn't have enough Kaworu in it.

I guess, but as far as I can judge, they grow up with so much "mature" media, that they're "too young to get it" or "old enough to get and handle it" but never "too young to handle it". Also they're probably watching the (IMO more child-friendly) Rebuilds.

Yeah, the movies are way more kid friendly. I liked the part where there's train-sized intenstines splattering blood all over buildings to the tune of a children's song.

At least 2.0 did get the same rating (+16) over here.
It boggles the mind how american TV broadcasts censored random swear words, but not the intestines. Bardiel was probably the reason for the rating, since that's the only thing that's really much worse than in 2.0. well, except maybe Asuka's perineum.
Still, our Media doesn't always make sense either: With all the graphic beheading and psychological horror, Q still got a +12. Maybe you could argue the imagery is not THAT bad/mostly fantastic in nature, but I'd say that as a whole, Q is much more horrifying; there's no clear good or bad side, hardly any uplifting breather moments, you see some kid smash his posessions and bash his head on a wall, and another explode into gore, with bits of him still sticking to the glass and sliding down...
At very least, I don't see a discrepancy in the other direction (ie, Q being much lighter)
And obviously, if two pieces are accessible to a 12 year old and this is the age of the internet, how likely is it that they will wait four years before watching the in-between thing?
...That EVA party for your daughter sounds like an awesome comming-of-age ritual XD

It was rather fun, really. We had a great time with the games. Both of us read a bit of Japanese so we could play a downloaded version of GoS2 and spent the weekend shipping Shinji with Rei and Kaworu.

The Germany that censor many games to make them more family friendly, being only surpassed by Australia, that Germany?!
How the hell did it happened?!

Seriously, that is the most fananked theory I've ever heard, more than Mari being Marty McFly travelling through time to keep her parents (Asushin) together. -- Jäeger

^ I'm shocked too, although our system has weird ratings every couple of years (I'm still shocked by Felidaeas rating)
Regarding the kid friendly topic: IMO the Rebuilds are clearly concepted to appeal to a rather young audience (12+), despite or even because of the ( in my opinion overdrawn and stylized and therefore more to a adolescent viewer appealing ) gore.

Double Standard, that's how.
Movies and TV shows have already made it into the "It's not porn, it's Art!" category, and the ratings are mostly refrshingly sensible, you can have a +16 rating with a tame, non-violent, less graphic sex scene, it' mostly "glorification of violence" that rains down the +18s.
(RTL II is NOT representative AT ALL.)
Video games haven't reached "Art" status in the wide public just yet, and there was this "killer game craze" a few years back, when some nutjob organized this famous school shooting in Ehrfurt, so that's made the authorities hyper senitive for video games in particular, allthough that's already in the process of fading, thankfully.
Also, many of the video games in question were War Themed. Anything to do with War makes people go into a frenzy for historical reasons.
Regarding the kid friendly topic: IMO the Rebuilds are clearly concepted to appeal to a rather young audience (12+), despite or even because of the ( in my opinion overdrawn and stylized and therefore more to a adolescent viewer appealing ) gore.
I'm not even going to bother with the usual Rebuild hater rant.
If you really think that, then explain the multitude of naked young women. (or young men, In 1.11!Kaworu's case)

Isn't that what kids want to see ? Search for kids (mainly males) that are 12-16 years old and ask them what they want to see ? You're not going to hear "nothing with blood or boobs". It isn't a coincidence that the main target for games like GTA or Call of Duty are 12-16 years old kids. Hell, most of the kids in this age watch porn.
And you really can't deny, that characters like Mari are incredibly appealing to rather young viewers and designed to do so.
Edit:
Were exactly am I ranting ? I'm just speculating over the demographic and try to justify my assumptions. The original show is too really appealing to a young audience (giant robots fighting monsters in general are), why do you take this as an insult ? Also, isn't this Q-Spoilers overdrawn ?
