Oh man I forgot about that. Yes that's up there also.
@ Mr. Tines: I found previously existing threads discussing sad moments, so I'm gonna go read all of that. I'll keep an eye out to see if you shared more about your opinion about the saddest moments being at the end.
I watched the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV show and films for the 1st time in January 2014. Heartbreakingly sad but so beautiful too. I'm here to discuss theories about what happened in the show.

Related? More like identical. Merged.
My picks:
- Kyoko-sama's death. (Somebody needs to mourn the one who experienced that horrific mutilation first-hand. Hell with Asuka.)
- The "Goodbye, Mother" scene.

Just read through this entire thread.
I'm moving up Asuka's death as an equal tie with Misato's kiss/death.
Everything happened so fast during Asuka's MP Eva battle and I was struggling to keep up with the Jap Subs. After reflecting I realize Shinji's inability/refusal to fight made Asuka's death even sadder. He could have prevented her from that pain and horror of being eaten and ripped. But he sat there.
I'm not blaming him. Shit was messed all around. But he still didn't help in time.
Oh man, not sure I can marathon it by myself again.
@Mr. Tines: You mind sharing which parts of the end of EoE in particular you found sad? Although I may have missed your comments from 4 years ago in this thread.

That scene was very tender and emotional when I look back at it and it was one of the more pleasant scenes in a overall unpleasant movie. I refuse to believe in the notion that Yui-san does NOT care for Shinji. I understand why some take issue with her character and her actions and she sure hell ain't going to win "Mother of the Year" award but I could never take seriously the claim she doesn't love/care for only child from some her detractors. Lies, I tell you!

Rei IV: I'm confused -- are you arguing that I shouldn't have listed it as "sad"?

No, Reichu, I'm not arguing anything, actually.
My point was that that particular scene in EoE was very tender and emotional. Many Yui detractors love to argue (using this scene, believe it or not) that she really "doesn't care for Shinji" with all the shit that went on, how she would've stayed with him and blah, blah, blah, blah. When I look it again (the scene), I find it hard to believe the woman does not love/care for her child on some emotional level. She may not win the "Mother of the Year" award but the suggestion she has no empathy/love/care for her son is asinine. Hope this clarifies some things.

Up-thread I only mentioned episode 16. For me, in EoE, it was seeing Asuka broken on the beach, pretty much back in the bathtub.

Ah I love this forum.
On my own I never would have thought about the music, or bothered to learn the lyrics.
During 3I and the rapture I knew it was sad as hell. As GNR grew out of the Earth to enormous heights the music was sad and tragic and melancholy. But I never would have thought of the actual song without seeing references on EGF.
Komm, Susser Tod: Beautiful and sad.

I actually think a lot of what happens episode 26' to be really sad, like Gendo's final words about Shinji, the dialogue between Yui and Fuyutsuki in the end, the scene where Rei takes all of the character's souls into Instrumentality, the end itself, but in terms of "holy shit that really gets the feel out of me", Asuka's death. Not that it really makes me "sad", but you can just feel the rage and hatred in her eyes and her words, and once the MPE's strike her and Maya screams to Shinji about her death, it really hits you. Actually, pretty much of all of Asuka's major character scenes are like that. The scene inside her head in ep 22, and especially in 22', her case in 25, and others like that were always very effective to me.
The part where Shinji and Asuka didn't get married and have all the babies.
At least not in a blasted hellscape where they hate each other and cling together only for survival and companionship in a dead world drowned in blood and she dies from puerperal fever.

^Dies from what now?
Well, I was expecting them to starve to death anyway...unless the white ground is made of marshmallow or Shinji's been nomming on Lilith's leftover bits.
