Originally for EVA-01. Hijacked to be a commenting ground for Rebuild design work on all of the Evas. -Reichu

So, I think I've just seen the new EVA-01 design on 4chan. I've just saved it, it's a huge Newtype scan.

How is that new design any different than the old one?

Well, for one thing, there's a neon green strip along its waist.

Ah well, here's a composite of the baloon from ep06

If that picture is to be believed, then the horn looks a bit thinner and not as pronounced.

For the second time this day,

DO NOT WANT

The picture on the left is a scan from Sore o nasumono -- an old color concept for EVA-01 by Yamashita, apparently dragged out of the vault for Weva...

The EVA's designs are two faced. On one side we have realism, and also the human appearance and nature of the Evangelion, which made Evangelion stand apart from almost all of the other series in that aspect alone. This also gave the EVA a very "they are humans too" effect, which gave more depth, almost making the Evangelion's characters themselves.

On the other hand, the unrealistic design and nature of the EVA's made them all the more dark, impacting, demonic, and just downright sexy (How does a glowing eyed devil looking thing covered in blood not give you a hard on?). The long arms, the eyes, the very skinny stomachs, the very slender and agile design gave them the darkness.

Personally, I'd like to see them try and fuse both of these aspects together a bit more, the left and right image do not match. The left is the more human EVA design, and the right is the darker slender EVA design.

The original series did a good job showing both sides of the EVA, but did a crappy job bonding them together on a regular basis. For example, at one moment an EVA looks like a transformer action figure, lifeless. The other second it it's watching Shinji with its/her eyes. The contrast needs to remain big, as that is the catalyst to a lot of things (freaking everyone the hell out being one of them). However, they need to be tied together a bit more, yet keep that effect.

I think the giant robot makes it unrealistic.

It doesn't make a bit of difference, guys. The arms are inert.

No, this is.

EVA-01 glows in the dark. Can you smell the action figures from here? Because I can.

It looks like a demonic Buzz Lightyear. Seriously, what's up with the glow in the dark effects? I guess some Japanese suit sat down one day and thought "Gee whiz, this design really needs some more Tron influence!" :?

For some reason, I'm not looking forward to seeing the Evas done in cell shaded CG, either. It's one thing to render something like a car, or a fully mechanical robot in cell shading, but to animate something like an Evangelion, which moves like a human being, I have a feeling that it's going to dissapoint. I remember watching Appleseed and having a really hard time getting past the fact that everyone moved like robots, and I'm kind of afraid that that's what's going to happen with Eva Rebuild.
