Is it any different from how they advertise similar blockbusters these days? I mean, why the fuck not.

EDIT: Just saw this [s]on /m/[/s], an interview with Travis Beacham about the mecha genre and all that:

Jeffrey Harris: In crafting this story, you have kaiju monsters and giant robots which were largely pioneered by Japanese movies and TV shows. Did you have any inspiration that specifically came to mind?

Travis Beacham: There wasn't anything really specific. I've sort of been ensconced in that whole subgenre. I've internalized so much of the trappings and the conventions of the genre that I think at the time I started putting the movie together – there wasn't a lot of thought about a specific reference. It just kind of came from those interests in those sort of things. I kind of like that genre.

Jeffrey Harris: Among the genre, do you have any personal favorites?

Travis Beacham: Oh yeah, definitely. I think as a kid, Voltron was definitely a favorite of mine. Then, I really like Big O. I like the Gunbuster and Diebuster series. I really like Evangelion and Escaflowne. I can think of so many. It's sort of like a personal kind of technology. It's really like my primal being in a weird way.

Jeffrey Harris: What was your reaction when you started seeing the more completed footage of the Jaegers fighting the Kaiju?

Travis Beacham: Yeah, the effects have been really eye popping and mind blowing to me. I think Jurassic Park was the movie that made me think really seriously about making movies in the future. And so to have ILM be the guys on this is just an extraordinary experience. The things that they're doing, just to my eyes, are incredibly impressive. I think they are some of the best creature effects if not the best creature effects that I have ever seen committed to film. It's really, really mind blowing stuff.

Seeing Gunbuster getting mentioned made me squeal. Internally. Like a little girl.

This movie will rock.

New trailer.

By the way, if anything, Pacific Rim's kaiju concept sounds like that of Dai-Guard's:

Dai-Guard exposition dump wrote:Off the Pacific coast of our country at 8,020 meters below sea level,
the two tectonic plates, Pacific and Eurasian, are pulled by mantle convection to collide with one another.
When the extremely large-scale electromagnetic wave caused by this resonates
with the complex number dimension that can be detected as a quantum existence,
the so-called "dimensional quake" phenomenon occurs, creating a single point of communal space,
from which there is a tremendous influx of energy.
And when this energy displays behavior like that of a life form, we call it a Heterodyne.
Now, having analyzed the remains of all the Heterodynes that have appeared thus far,
as you can see, we have ascertained that they are like "shells" created from terrestrial elements,
each with a different composition.
However, we have yet to gather enough data to even begin to guess the true nature of Heterodynes,
their characteristics, or the principle behind their actions. What we urgently need
is information and materials.

Huh, I never realized that "Gipsy Danger" was the name of one of the Jaegers.... I thought it was just some futuristic military code.

I really would love to hear what Anno ends up thinking of this movie.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I'd be more interested in what Nagai would have to say, personally. I doubt Anno would even care about PR. Too busy milking Eva.

The mechs have spechs and records.

Kind of like how there are specs for each mobile suit in Gundam (hence why there is a page like MAHQ) or for each Tactical Surface Fighter in Muv Luv. Even the various Mazinger incarnations and various Getters have specs. Del Toro most likely just decided to follow this.

As for the kaiju...I dunno. I guess they're basing themselves on something from Japanese kaiju movies where they classify each monster in a some way? I don't know to be honest.

Another cliip.

OST is same guy as Iron Man's.

Oh yes, and speaking of stuff, a new featurette about the Kaiju (explaining the aforementioned tributes and abilities and all that) came out.
