The charitable analysis of this phenomenon is that it's intentional: that we're seeing her boobs through Shinji's emotional POV in those scenes, and as such, the boobs are shown bigger for dramatic effect.

The less charitable view is that it's pure fanservice, plain and simple. I suppose a structuralist would argue the former, and a realist would argue the latter. While I'd like to give Anno and the animators some literary credit here, I find it hard to do so, in light of how inconsistent the sizes are in non-POV scenes.

It's both. Shinji's perspective is our perspective.

Every other girl the pilots' age is flat chested and drawn with a child's proportions, while Asuka and Rei are 3/4 scale adults.

Nah, it makes sense. Asuka's a big fan of soaps, and she has some very "traditional" (read: archaic) views on gender roles. In a lot of ways GWtW is an iconic movie for her.

That's not the Asuka we idolize or "squeee!" about, of course, but it is the Asuka presented in the show.

That's because they're in your browser's cache, so it doesn't have to follow the hotlink and you don't get blocked. I make it a habit to check posts with images in a different browser which I haven't looked at the images in to get around that.

That reminds me, isn't Anno supposed to be a deconstruction of this trope, hence the "hospital scene"? So, way are there so many provocative of the Female characters, especially by Sadamoto, when Anno is trying to prove that they're not just objects to lust over? That always has confused me.
