Just noticed that UTW used a lossless audio codec (FLAC) for their 1080p release and a lossy audio codec (AAC) for the 720p release. Was this done just to get the encoding done faster?

Most likely, as FLAC is a lot more dense than AAC in terms of encoding.
Speaking of which, has anyone tried to watch the 1080p on a blu-ray player approved for playback of video files? I'm waiting for my dl to finish and I was wondering if anyone has tried it. I have a Panasonic that is able to play .mkv's, and I believe it can handle FLAC as well.

Not to the extremely untrained ear. FLAC is audio perfection, completely lossless. AAC is about 256 kbps. There is only a difference really in the audio range, where FLAC goes up to 22kHz and AAC cuts off at about 20. So, tl;dr, no, there's not really an audible difference.

I do believe Anno has a point to making sure people watch the "God Warrior Attacks Tokyo" short before they watch the movie proper; it's a shame most sub groups are omitting it (UTW :(), but I also understand why.

Well, I gave up trying to download the 1080p and 720p versions, as I'm beginning to think my laptop simply doesn't support those types of files. On the bright side I manage to download UTW-Thora's 480p version, so it's all good and would compare it to the former versions I mentioned. I can't say there's much of a grand difference between these three, IMHO. I'm assuming the 480p is the DVD version, am I right?

This. I can't find any subbed releases of the movie on Nyaa that explicitly say they've included it, nor can I find a standalone sub of the short. :irked:

The name of the short is "God Warrior Attacks Tokyo", right? What is it called in Japanese? Also, does the short play before the movie on the BD, or is it included as an extra? That might explain why it's so scarce....

It's part of the main feature, not an extra.

The UTW-THORA encode is 10bit, which is troublesome because 1) some players can't play it 2) it requires a lot more CPU power for those that can. I don't understand their logic... the BD was 8bit, so unless they applied some filtering, what's the advantage of 10bit?

I had to grab a raw (the CHD 1080p) in order to get something that would play on my old laptop. Bonus: it came with the God Warrior short. I downloaded the subs separately (subs are just for 3.33, not the short). It's nice have the subs in a separate file anyway, it allows me to edit them according to my preferences.

My apologies. Some these threads here and in the Q sub-forum are almost (ridiculously) identical to another and I got confused. Any who, I look forward to your translation, Reichu. UTW-Thora did great job, from what I saw, but there were many scenes where the translation felt a bit peculiar and had moments were I preferred the script used for the camrip version.

They are flat text files, so as long as you keep the format, you can just change the dialog text in Notepad or whatever.

Yeah, you can just use a plain text editor.

And in fact, I did just that in order to fix all the things I didn't like about UTW's subs by making some small tweaks and mixing in a few lines I preferred from the github translation. No more Networking Four-eyes! :lol:

10-bit has the benefit of preventing colorbanding (to a degree) during transcode, regardless of whether the source is 8 or 10 bit.

Thanks for the edited subs, I did a quick diff and they're a big improvement. Note to others: they're timed for encodes that include the short at the beginning.
