It is not really the fact that I am getting things, it is just that I don't really feel the same way when I see lights, there is really nothing I want that I cannot find on ebay for a cheaper price, and that it just feels like another month to me.
logic.

I realized that long ago but it didn't bother me. I have some friends who bitch about it but I typically just ignore them. I honestly could care less that Christmas is driven by capitalism and materialism anymore. I might have cared when I was younger but now it's just... materials are fun. 'Aint nothin' wrong with wanting more stuff, as long as you don't let that desire to want more stuff hurt other people.

And it isn't... it isn't the whole "get together with family" thing that makes Christmas fun... it's the energy. It's a once a year experience that's not replicated for 11 months, no other holiday can compete. Halloween comes closest but even Halloween falls far behind. The snow, the lights, the decorations, the Christmas tree, the music on the radio, the packed crowds of cheerful people, the memories, Christmas time radiates an energy of emotion that just isn't replicated. And that's why I enjoy Holidays. It's not the holiday itself, it's not the "spend time with family" aspect, the holiday is just another day and if I ever want to spend time with my family I can at the drop of a hat. It's the energy in the air that just screams out to you to jump for joy, to skip down the street, to sing a song, to just be happy.

Given that the midwinter feast was just the Roman Saturnalia rebadged, if it's all about consumption around the nadir of the year, then that's just getting back to its roots, and nothing like being a celebration of the existence of the joint stock company as a business model.

Ehh, the midwinter feasts weren't traditionally about commercialism either, Tines. Most crucial Christmas holiday traditions were pretty much carried on as they were in their national regions (finnish/swedish Christmas gets it name straight from pagan "jule" too) with Christian makeover anyway.

Corporate Christmas(tm) is of course a product of modernity as our modern society isn't very old.

It's no wonder silly reifags are mad that Sheryl has been the only constant, major presence on Newtype female character charts for 4 years straight (even keions dropped out now and then). :D

:headscratch: Christmas, a celebration of consumerism? What does that even mean? Much of what I get for Christmas brings joy and meaning to my life and keeps getting used year-round.

All I mean is that a lot of people seem to focus on the gift-receiving aspect of Christmas rather than the meaning behind the giving of gifts. I'm sure many of you saw this around New Years 2012:

I know this only represents a small portion of people, but it still gets to me when I think about it. Sorry to post such a depressing pic in a thread that's supposed to be about the good side of the Christmas season. I'm happy to see that it's alive and well among EGF users!

In an effort to be a little more on-topic, I think I'll be asking Santa for an Arduino this year, instead of my usual jumble of stuff from ThinkGeek. I would be asking for a Raspberry Pi if the delivery time wasn't on the scale of several months....

That was pretty common in rage threads a while back. As aneurysm inducing as it is it didn't surprise me in the least, like you I went to high school with people like that. I'd have fucking killed for the life they lived, ungrateful twats.

Rum solves all problems. Rum also causes problems. To remedy those problems I recommend more rum.

Probably the Arduino Uno R3 that's up for sale on Amazon. Might ask for a few accessories as well. How long did it take for them to ship the Raspberry Pi to you? I'm thinking of getting one both for the "wow" factor and as a nifty way to get started with Linux.

I ordered it probably in June and got it sometime in July, but that was when they just started going into full scale production,I would imagine that since production has increased you should be able to get it fairly soon but that would all depend on where and what shipping method you choose. Oh and some advice when purchasing the arduino from amazon, most of the arduinios on amazon are probably clone boards, which isn't a bad thing since the arduino plans are open source and all and from what I here the Uno Rev 3 is a good board.

I would be ordering from the U.S., and the American distributor that I was looking at warned that orders could take several months to process. The one month time frame you mentioned doesn't seem too bad, though.

The Amazon page I linked above mentions that it's the original board made in Italy, as do some of the reviews on it, so maybe that problem with the clone boards was fixed? The one in the image even has a "Made in Italy" stamp on the back.

there isn't any problems with clone boards, the one I have a Dumilanove that I picked up from amazon is most likely a clone board just thought it wise to give you a heads up and even if it is a clone board it will work fine with the arduino software

Ah, that's good. Still, being Italian myself it would give me that extra little bit of satisfaction knowing that the board I got was made in my country of origin.
