It's just a religious reference I'm sure you're familiar with: the Treasury of Souls, holding the souls that trickle off the Tree of Souls but not born into a physical body yet.

I think Kaworu is merely using a metaphor to refer to stopping whatever entity is the center of Instrumentality here from carrying out that function.

The important question related to this is "Do we ever see Kaworu's palms?"

From a logical standpoint it still makes zero sense, does Shinji gain something from knowing that Kaworu could die in his place? Someone on /a/, I happened to re-open it just after posting this question, said something about a "registration" system which monitors Shinji, but it'd be still weird that they (Evil-Misato and co.) didn't do anything after they lost the signal for some seconds.

In NGE, the Doors of Guf were apertures that opened on the palms (or were forcefully put there as stigmata), so it's not unreasonable to wonder if they have a physical manifestation in NME as well.

Kaworu outright shows that he's willing to risk his life for Shinji, thereby giving him someone to emotionally latch onto. Like I said, building up trust.

Is there anything in the movie that addresses the implication in the first two films that Gendo maneuvered Shinji and Rei to become close to each other so he'd flip out and start an Impact event over her?

Especially if it was a conscious choice or not.

One would assume that they chalked it up to some kind of glitch in the system.

If Misato didn't blow Shinji's head off when Gendo seized him, she's sure as hell not going to blow his head off just because the collar dropped off the radar for a couple of seconds.

Seems perfectly logical to me. And of course the collar would have some kind of vitals monitoring system.

Why not take off the collar and just throw it away...
Why was the collar even made to be taken off ... usually in films with collars, they auto activate if tinkered with.
