I knew I should have been more careful about sources but I couldn't be bothered to look them up when I wrote that. But after some googling...

Q (in English): 2009 announced at Fanimecon 3 projects (e.g., an Abenobashi special). Any news?
A (Hiroyuki Yamaga): Tadashi Hiramatsu is working at khara on the Evangelion movies. There are no resoruces at the moment.

Kitoh said in the CRC that he and Anno had worked before on another project but as far as I know Eva 2.0 is the only such that exists.

Yamashita first heard news of the new movies from director Hideaki Anno, but at the time, he didn't realize what a monumental task was in front of him. "Anno only mentioned it very briefly in passing, at the very end of a presentation about a bunch of new projects.", he says.

Of course this is quite vague since we don't know anything else about this presentation and these wouldn't necessarily have been Anno's projects. But add these two statements together and we get something to speculate about.

and please stop these Lucas comparisons already :(

I think that the free-diving part makes reference to another work Mr. Yamaga and Mr. Akai were interested in doing, and completely unrelated to Abenobashi Mahō Shōtengai. I've seen rumors stating that documentation for this project was one of the reasons they went on a trip to Yonago City (Tottori, Japan), besides their work in supporting the newly formed Yonago Eiga Jihen independent film festival.

Sorry, but I'm not confident enough in my pedestrian French and English to help you on this matter, as my mistakes would be more confusing than helpful for all the fans interested. Mr. Tines has made a substantially better translation than what I would have come up with. As a native Spaniard, I think I can help if you want translations for texts in Spanish, but I suppose I can't promise you anything extremely accurate with my poor English vocabulary, though.

View Original Postgwern wrote:My own Connichi source (http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.php/recent_stuff#c10309) was distinctly less confident; given the absence of any information in the 3 years since...

As long as Mr. Yamaga itself doesn't shows up and says they are never going to complete the project, I'll still have hope!

He acts as a freelance, but I think he truly is part of the permanent staff (not like Shin Itagaki, although he is listed as such) and will continue to work with them regularly.

Even if GAiNAX has always attracted and nurtured magnificent talent, I hope that at least part of the young rising stars remain in there for some time, ones like Hiroaki Tomita, Ikuo Kuwana or, as you said, Megumi Kouno (although she maybe isn't with them anymore).

Didn't he was referring specifically to Ghost Rhapsody (project to be directed by Mr. Hiramatsu) with that answer?

A reason to bump this thread.
Yasuhiro Takeda revealed during Revoltech Meeting that Gainax next original project will not be a robot anime http://tinyurl.com/7opvy6z

I could only assume the blog author was right and as far as I know Ghost Rhapsody was never much more than a rumor. But maybe now it's finally Hiramatsu's turn after all.

The blog author did not get it quite right. The relevant part of the Japanese article is:

なお、ガイナックスの今後の展開として、先日作成が公開された西尾維新氏原作・暁月あきら氏の「めだかボックス」のアニメ化、他オリジナル原作1本予定。
それとは別に、グレンラガンと同時進行で6~7年温めた、エヴァやグレンラガン同様、フラグシップとして考えているアニメも、来年出せるように進行していっているとのことです!
ちなみにそのフラグシップ作品には、ロボットは出てこないらしいです。

The key points are:

- 他オリジナル原作1本予定
There will be one original work coming (on top of the announced "Medaka Box" which is an adaptation of manga)

- それとは別に、グレンラガンと同時進行で6~7年温めた、エヴァやグレンラガン同様、フラグシップとして考えているアニメも、来年出せるよう
- Besides that original work above, there is an anime that can be considered "flagship work" like Eva and Gurren Lagann and has been under development for 6-7 years at the same time Gurren Lagann was developed. It is possible that this will also come out next year.

- そのフラグシップ作品には、ロボットは出てこないらしい
- That flagship anime will not have robots

So the blog author mixed up the next original work with their flagship anime. The flagship work is not their next original project.
I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,
But I discovered Re-Take (or it found me?) and
now here I am.

Cue speculation the 'flagship' is _Aoki Uru_.

I think I remember Yamaga saying he visited England for some kind of "dream project" that might or might not have been Aoki Uru. Funny if it was Dantalian.

Ghost Rhapsody would also have been in development for 6-7 years by now.

Whatever this "flagship project" is, if it's directed by Yamaga it will suck.

More so than any other anime studio, Gainax has always struck me as a director driven production house. Gainax has lost all their star directors - Anno, Tsurumaki, Imaishii, all gone.
Unless if they have some wunderkind taking over directorial duties I'm not getting pumped for any future Gainax works till they actually deliver.
