2nd EvADC: Best Character, Best Fighter and Quirkiest

We are really creeping down into the middle of the month now. On with the next wave of Awards!

The themes for today's Awards center around characterization and the personality emitted by our Designs. These Awards include Best Character, Best Fighter, and Quirkiest.

The Award for Best Character went to the Design with the most engrossing and interesting personality or story background. The author's attempts to imbue their cold, eerie cyborgs or mysterious, genocidal aliens with a... human touch.

Our Eva winner is:

None.

Sorry, another let down! Though Contest vet NemZ managed to pull it off last year, I'm afraid that it's a real challenge trying to place a winner for this Award when it comes to the Eva League. The thing in is, Evas are mainly viewed to be very cold and mechanical - I can't see where one can put a Character in that somewhere. I fear it was bad foresight in allowing this Award to be given to an Eva; perhaps I should have made a substitute. Then again that may be hypocritical of me, considering that I am a huge proponent of making the aforementioned Angels as characters and this Award was created to encourage that.

While I ultimately had to deny the Award, our Judges gave Archaiel's Unit 6.66 the nod as the candidate with the strongest chance of nabbing the Award. However, the short profile was more of a technical manual and didn't seem to scream personality, just suggest it, and the way it fought seemed to speak more of its pilot than its own character.

A Judge who withheld wrote:None of these entries really seems to have an identifiable personality. Maybe 6.66 but since the pilot and mother are so 'in tune' it's impossible to say the way it typically fights has anything to do with the unit itself rather than just the pilot's attitude.

A Judge who voted Unit 6.66 wrote:[This] vote was a tough one - while the Evas all had things going for them in the other category, an actual personality was something they seemed to lack... but in the end, I had to go with Unit 6.66, who was all about attitude and being in your face via its threatening, up close and personal design.

Our Angel winner is:

Image chazthesilencer with Huaddaheul: the Angel of Nourishment

Now this is more like it. Chaz seizes the day with his entry written in the first-person perspective of his carrot-like Angel. Chaz's Angels have always had their own personalities and ways of doing things, but this was the first time we've looked into the (bizarre and vacuous) head of one of his characters. What it lacked in word count it made up in sheer effectiveness; it was unique, fast-paced and - dare I say - revolutionary.

Belial got a vote for his ruthless devotion towards destruction and calculating mindset. It was clear from Holy Diver's account that the Angel named after a Devil was was dripping in hate and bile and power. Humans were toys to him and he seems unstoppable. But give me a moment before I explain why he didn't get this.

I felt that Artemisael should have gotten a mention for this Award: an Angel who is, in fact, the "dark" half of Arael, and exists to exorcise its strength in lieu of transforming the world. His profile was as detailed as Belial's; revealing his inner monologs, tactics and motivations. He's an aggressive bastard and is full of personality - but he's not revolutionary:

Up until now, most of us have accepted the idea that Angels being some combination of curious, brutal, and/or violent as the norm - like giant Reis and Kawrous. What chaz has done here is posit the notion that, unlike his outwardly aggressive peers like Belial and Artemisael, Huaddaheul is in fact the norm for Angel attitudes; that Angels are in fact oblivious creatures going about their ways and humans who are so helpless against them are the ones who label them with "evil" adjectives. After all, how does an ant regard the men who walk over them on the side walk?

The guy for chaz's Entry wrote: Fully embracing a child-like personalty and building the entire entry around this persona was extremely effective at demonstrating the personality of this poor misunderstood little fella.

The other for Holy Diver's Entry wrote: On the Angelic route, it was either going to be Belial or Huaddaheul for me, but Belial's manipulative and seemingly pure evil nature won out over Hua's naive, nice guy narrator persona.

The Award for Best Fighter was bestowed upon the overall most formidable/well-rounded combatant among all of the Entries. Attention was given to the kinds of weapons and abilities a Design used, its defenses and its skill in combat situations.

Our Eva winner is:

Image Archaiel with Evangelion Unit 6.66 LCFL

Newcomer Archaiel brings with him work that clearly existed before his entrance into this Contest. What Unit 6.66 brought to the table were a bevvy of advanced technologies, reliable synchronicity, and raw fighting power. The Eva is almost overpowered, save for some compromises in armor; with the kind of arsenal at its pilot's fingertips, I doubt any Angel under an A-class would make him break a sweat.

Of course, tehprognoob's entry should be mentioned. Delivering on his promise to bring more dakka to the Contest, tehprognoob took a standard MP Eva and decked it the hell out with so many missile pods and cannons it looked like it was trying to bundle up for a Siberian winter by wearing artillery. While Unit-05 Alpha's fashion sense was laudable, it wasn't all that practical in real combat against Angels - its own battle against Artemisael was proof that guts and brawn was more effective than tons of human-made ordinance. However, I will give tehprognoob one thing: Unit-05 Alpha would have made a fine support-weapon against the Angel I barely made last year, Shaitan - as long as ammo held out anyway.

Unit-07, the Eva specialized for aquatic use, was perhaps the only Eva with the right stuff to work in an environment militaries everywhere consider vital to projecting power. It certainly would have been helpful to fight Gaghiel of all Angels. Then again, how many times would anyone expect to keep fighting in the water other than for Gaghiel?

One Judge who elected Unit 6.66 a lot so far wrote:Unit 6.66 again? Yup. Up close and personal fighter, with a brutal sword, claws, fast reflexes and very agile make him the almost clear contestant. 05 Alpha had some pretty nice combat abilities, too and Unit 07 brought a new way to fight, but in the end, Unit 6.66 for me.

The Other wrote: While the others may be useful in specific circumstances only 05a and 6.66 LCFL seem actually combat worthy. All those missiles and guns may look impressive, but the show tells us very clearly that when it comes to eva-scale battles melee ability usually trumps just about everything.

Our Angel winner is:

Image tehprognoob with Artemisael: Angel of the Hunt

Image

Let's be clear: Artemisael is not the strongest Angel around. He's not quite as powerful as some of the other Angels this season or as previous recipients of this Award in the past. By it's own description he has firepower more along the lines of a C-class Angel. But that's not the point; Artemisael is worthy for this Award because he can FIGHT - not demolish, not intimidate, but effectively put damage where it counts and shrug off incoming damage in reasonable levels. Where most Angels have relied on sheer power or special abilities to win victory, Artemisael one of the few I've seen to skillfully utilize his modest armament in ways that multiply his effectiveness. He may have lost his battle in his Scenario, but it was a tough one that was hard fought.

Belial and Gamaliel were rightly deemed formidable as well; Belial being an A-class in disguise boasting powerful abilities, and Gamaliel possessing many brutal and nasty special abilities that could ruin anyone's day. However, these guys were limited in terms of mobility and speed: a weakness that many Angels don't address too much themselves.

One Judge summed it up well when wrote:While NOT the most formidable of the angels presented on paper, I feel Artemisael is nonetheless the best example of a true warrior. It has a sense of style, focus and precision that make it perhaps a much more dangerous opponent overall than the more bluntly powerful angels.

A Judge who voted for Artemisael wrote:On the Angel, my reasons in the Innovation category pretty much are the same reasons for my vote here.

[Yet]

Belial comes a close second, using Lilim themselves to do his dirty work, but isn't enough of a fighter on a physical level...

[Further]

Gamaliel has its rot and time-warping abilities to its advantage, but...

The Award for Quirkiest went out to the - oh hell, just read ahead.

One unanimous voter wrote: Those arms... it would make such a great little mascot eva if it weren't for that touch of weirdness. Madness! Undeniably quirky though.

Our Angel winner is:

Image chazthesilencer with Huaddaheul: the Angel of Nourishment

Image

I'm sorry guys, I didn't want this to happen. I didn't mean for chaz to not only get this Award again, for the third year in a row, but for BOTH Leagues! It's just that, it's, it's... Look at these damn things! A deformed Eva/glass cannon? A happy-go-lucky carrot?! And they are all perfectly plausible?! What's in the damned water in the UK to make a man think of such things?! Can anyone depose the King of Quirk? Someone? I sure as hell can't do it, I have no sense of humor!

Gamaliel obtained a vote for this Award because of his beautifully abstract form, ungainly structure, and unnerving gait. And yet, his profile didn't seem to take this any further into the realm of the strange; being content with being another oddly shaped Angel.

The Judge who voted for both wrote:Seriously, there's no contest on who has the quirkiest Eva and Angel this year (especially the Eva!). I think the awards for this category should go to these two delightfully off-the-wall contenders - a beautifully, hilariously useless Eva with a just as useless weapon; and an Angel that narrates its own contest entry, and has a delightfully wacky design. I wouldn't be surprised if the vote was unanimous in the end, Chaz did that good of a job making them stand out.

The Judge who made a good point for Gamaliel wrote: An appearance much like a Salvador Dali painting gone horribly wrong, an odd but thematically connected suite of abilities, and an origin story that sets it apart from all the other angels as an abomination perhaps even more offensive than the evas? This angel is practically a quirky elemental. Even the way it walks is quirky.

Tomorrow we give the biggest Awards; Best Scenario, Best Symbolism and Best In Contest!

Thanks for catching that; after a while my eyes started to cross and that slipped by. Moving on to the third day of Awards!

Today, I bring fourth the Awards which center around story elements, themes, and overall execution. They are Best Symbolism , Best Scenario, and Best In Contest.

The Award for Best Symbolism went to the Designer who could prove that their design was worthy of its title. The use of symbolism was a major element in the original anime; remaining faithful to this design consideration served to enhance the feel, characterization, and quality of Designs. Attention was given to the descriptions of a Design and how it related to its intended or perceived symbolic appeal.

Our Eva winner is:

Image Archaiel with Evangelion Unit 6.66 LCFL

Image

This year we give the Symbolism Award to the first Eva design of this Contest (last year it was not given). Like for the Character Award for the Eva League, I was afraid that it would be unfairly difficult for an Eva to obtain this Award - since the typical design of an Eva leaves very little room for symbolic references. Yet Archaiel managed to pull this caper off.

For those of you who can not already tell, Unit 6.66 is chock-full of Lucifer references; the number of the beast in the unit number, frequent allusions to the Eva's magnificence and power, etc. It seems a bit heavy-handed more than anything else, but that just makes its theme all the more undeniable.

A Judge who voted Unit 6.66 wrote:Perhaps a bit heavy-handed with the Lucifer references, not just in the designation but also the 6-winged design of the helm. fitting though, considering it's meant to be a sort of 'betrayer' right under Seele's nose.

A Judge who withheld wrote:Unfortunately, none of the Evas stood out with their symbolism, so I was unable to really decide on to vote on.

Our Angel winner is:

Image Omegagouki with Akrasiel: Angel of Justice

Image

A big win for Omega in this category, especially considering that his position as a Judge was an obstacle for his own entry from being selected for an Award. Akrasiel is laden with western imagery related to the concept of justice: a body plan exactly like a sword, and a balance located on the hilt. If this were not a design inspired by NGE, one would say that this thing was damn gaudy. But here it works, both in design and in performance. I'm sorry to say I forgot to mention this one as a consideration for the Best Fighter Award; just imagine the kind of justice this flying, giant sword would be able to unleash!

Gamaliel received a vote for this Award as well, owing to its integration of the Three of Sephiroth into its skeletal frame, the notion of it being the gestalt of two warring types of matter, and its interpretation of manipulating time. Alas, the symbolism AyrYntake's entry was not through-the-roof like Omega's living sword of justice.

The guy favoring the now winner wrote:While several entries this time around made careful use of symbolism none of the others can match the way Akrasiel fully embraces it in both form and function.

The other for AyrYntake's Entry wrote:In the Angel department, though? Shape of a religious symbol in its very design? Check. The symbol [resonating] with the overall theme on Adam/Lilith? Check. Angel seeming to live up to its name origins? Check.

The Award for Best Scenario was given in recognition of a Design with the most interesting encounter, setting and/or battle. Attention was paid to the Designer's background descriptions concerning the origins of the participants, introduction into the NGE universe, interactions with the NGE cast and specific challenges in combat (use of abilities, situations, etc).

Our Eva winner is:

Image tehprognoob with Evangelion Unit 05-Alpha

Image

Continuing on where his LDC Presentation left off, tehprognoob's entry details the final sortie of this refitted MP Eva and its pilot. This one had all the action one would expect from an Eva battle, coupled with more of tehprognoob's narrative about the battered and bruised Vlore. While chronicling the desperate struggle between Eva and Angel, the entry was able to demonstrate Unit-05a's firepower and its pilot's insights into her own life. This entry was the most nuanced in the Eva League, brining to light the kind of world which the Eva resided in

One of our Judges abstained on this vote, rightly mentioning the fact that the scenario of an Angel assaulting a base and Evas coming up to respond has been done and beaten to death millions of times. The fact is, that is how most stories with Evas are: they are either responding to Angels or sitting in cages in wait. This fact makes future attempts on this prize very precarious: authors are gonna have to get a little more creative when deciding how to best reveal their Eva in action without playing things out over and over.

One Judge who voted Unit-05 wrote:05-Alpha gets the scenario vote for pretty much the same reasons as its presentation - being part of an even larger lore that encompassed all of the contests combined. It gets to fight the wily Artemisael with Vlore at its helm, puts up a nice fight, and splendidly meets its demise.

The Other who withheld, probably in response to Unit-05 Alpha wrote:Only one of these entries includes a battle description at all, and 'angel attacks a base' is rather blah. This part of the story should have been in the Lilim entry where such details really matter!

Our Angel winner is:

Image Holy Diver with Belial: Angel of Hostility

Image

Another continuing entry from the LDC, this time by Contest vet Holy Diver, Belial's scenario tells the other side of that tale. Belial's story introduces us to a being who is a dangerous combination of petty, cruel, deadly and calculative. Driven by pure disgust and hatred for humanity rather the typical Angel goal of unity and ascension, Belial gains infamy by being a master manipulator and voracious mind-rapist. This Angel earned a unanimous vote from our Judges because he was notable for being in charge of his destiny; planning ahead to inflict the most damage as possible rather than simply sauntering into his enemy's stronghold, confident in his own superiority. While not as sophisticated as the geo-political thriller that was Holy Diver's Lilim Entry, Belial displayed a lot of depth in the way he schemed and destroyed.

An honorable mention should have went to tehprognoob's Artemisael, as that story also detailed an Angel not particularly interested in achieving ascension and more willing to maintain the status quo (we... got a lot of that this year, didn't we?). Conveying real personality and deliberate thought, this Angel named after the Greek Goddess tried to be clever by attacking an auxiliary NERV facility. Alas, Artemisael was more of a side character to that tale; an obstacle used to bring closure to the real heroine's story.

One Judge wrote:Why Belial? Because rather than just being in his own scenario, he makes his own scenario, and he makes it well.

Another Judge wrote:This is a no-brainer if ever there was one. Most of Belial's existence is spent playing the larger game, a long-term player and strategist and not a mere event that others must react to.

The Award for Best in Contest is self-explanatory; presented to the Design that was, overall, the most-well rounded and interesting product in the entire contest. The entire description of the Design was considered, as well as how it compared to all of its rivals.

Our Eva winner is:

Image Archaiel with Evangelion Unit 6.66 LCFL

Image

Newcomer Archaiel entered the Contest with a dramatic bang by unveiling his Eva Design. The story attached to it was weak and centered more on describing the features of the Design. Unit-6.66 won over for its intricate design, its faithfulness to its implied Lucifer theme, and its combat effectiveness and features.

Perhaps one of his best reactions to date, chaz brought us a very unique take on Eva Design when he created Unit-DD. The Dog's profile was both informative and totally in character with the NGE universe, and though deformed, Unit-DD was very detailed and carefully designed. The fact that the Eva would probably not last past its first sortie in live combat even in a victory hurt its practicality factor, but that fact added character to the whole design and lived up to the theme of being an over-engineered quagmire.

The Voter who chose Unit 6.66 again wrote:I made my decisions here on the number of votes they got, mainly. This is especially true with 6.66, who got the most votes out of all the Evas on my ballot...

The Elector for Unit DD wrote:The other two entries are formidable, but the polish and style Chaz brought to his entry pushes it to the top for me.

Our Angel winner is:

ImageAyrYntake with Gamaliel: Angel of Time

Image

Contest vet AyrYntake, though a late presenter, without a doubt hit it out of the damn field when he presented Gamaliel to us. The Design of this twisted amalgam of matter oozes as much expert craftmanship and abstract artistic skill as its own putrid flesh out if its pores. Combining a totally twisted origin story, potentially very punishing and devastating combat abilities, and complete plausibility in the NGE universe, Gamaliel really stood out among more modest competition. Perhaps with this Award, this guy can catch a break now...

Artemisael won a vote because of its streamlined design, modest yet effective fighting abilities, and integration into a much larger story arc culminating to an epic finale. That having been said, being good all-round and being practical doesn't quite make you stand out in a final showdown, facing a monstrous juggernaut.

The Judge who voted Gamaliel wrote:I nominated this angel for two awards and strongly considered it for several others, so naturally I feel this this is the most well-rounded of the entires as a whole.

The Judge who voted Artemisael wrote:[A]s for the [Angels], I broke the tie on choosing the Angel that I liked best, and that was Artemisael, on a design level and a level of being in such a big lore set.

What we have left are the Awards regarding both the LDC and EvADC as a whole; Designer of the year and Winner of most Awards. I'll also provide a leaderboard to help us tally the numbers for this year.

WOOT! More awards :D Congrats to all of the contestants!

Sorry for the absence. Art school is rather time consuming :/ Hopefully once the semester gets fully underway I'll get a better routine down. When I have free time I'll be sure to stop by :)

Just place holders until I could put my actual thoughts on the subjects on there. They are up now, so feel free to go over them.

At LAST I bring you the final Awards for this year's Contests (THANK YOU GOD). These are Awards that recognize excellence across all the Contests: Designer of the Year, and Winner of Most Awards.

Designer of the Year went to those who entered both the EvADC and the LDC in the same year. The qualifications for this Award rely on merit and how a Designer performed overall, not necessarily based on how many or what kinds of Awards he/she has won for the year.

Our winner is:

Image tehprognoob

Image

Now ain't this a sight? From noob to pro, tehprognoob comes up on top and wins the Award for best in the year. Who would have thought? Well, one would only need to compare his previous efforts with his hot, new ones. While he has demonstrated his skill in art and prose before, he has sharpened his skills considerably and it shows. He demonstrated great work ethic while being registered in all three Leagues of the Contests, tending to each so the they all had quality and care in their Presentations. Most notably, tehprognoob demonstrated his ability to write quite involving stories, utilizing characters with personality and voice. This is a major step up from where he was previously, so here is a toast celebrating is efforts on this Contest and well wishes for the future!

AyrYntake should also deserve a nod even though he did not participate in both Contests. A long time veteran of my little Contests, he did not disappoint this year with his meticulously designed Angel which won Best in Contest earlier.

A surprise performance from Archaiel this year, a newcomer who demonstrated very real artistic talent very early on. Participating in both Contests for the first time, he really got into the swing of things (after a little help) and become a fine contributor. He racked many Awards for his artistic proficiency but could use more work on his narrative approach. Here is hoping he keeps improving year-round.

Let us not forget that Holy Diver was well qualified for this Award as well, maintaining his dedication to excellence with his work for this year as he did last. He has demonstrated his writing strengths in both Contests, pulling one into the world he wants you to see with technical clarity. Again, here's hoping he can put up with us a few years more!

A Judge who voted both tehprognoob and AyrYntake wrote:Partly my tallying up their votes, but also because they both did such a spectacular job. No, everyone did a wonderful job, but in the end, these two I felt came out on top.

A Judge who agreed wrote:Not only was he the only contestant to attempt all three categories, but two of the three entries were quite strong competitors in my view if not the best overall.

The Most Awards... Award was given to a Designer(s) who had won the most number of Awards across both Contests. Could this description be any more redundant?

Our winners are:

Image tehprognoob

AND

Image Archaiel

Image

Here is the breakdown in Awards won this year:

    MillionsKnives:
    1 = 1
    Omegagouki:
    1 = 1
    AyrYntake:
    3 = 3
    Archaiel:
    4 + 4 = 8

    chazthesilencer:
    5 = 5
    tehprognoob:
    5 + 3 = 8

    Holy Diver:
    1 + 3 = 4

As such, we have two winners for this Award. That just goes to show you how close this race was.

However, the competition was really more between Entries than Designers. Between Evas, Unit-6.66 and Unit-5a were chief rivals, vying for the same Awards and forcing me to make Judgements between them. Contributing to this was competition from chaz's Eva Unit-DD, which served to wonderfully complicate some decisions. There was also a fierce rivalry between Gamaliel and Artemisael, where both were nominated for Best Presentation and Best Innovation at the same time. It was a tough year to Judge for me, but I'm glad I got most of it sorted out.

Aaaaannnnnnnddddddddddddddd....................... that's it for the EvADC 2011! But it's not quite over yet. Feel free to post your Afterthoughts on this whole episode: Designs, Awards, etc. Also be sure to give your feedback and introduce ways to improve the Contests in the future!
