One more thing I just noticed in defense of my theory: Look how well the cut of the arms and torso line up with the footage of Eva-01 being grown and grafted from Lilith:



Basically, instead of excavating the whole thing it looks in both instances as if they simply cut her from the ground. Presumably her arm regenerated later to be as seen in the show in Terminal Dogma. I could also be wrong about the placement of the head in the image; admittedly it's the weakest part of the theory. The head could also be still buried and not in the amorphous shape I envision; another idea is that since her mask wouldn't have been applied yet, they didn't want to draw some original face and thus left the head very undefined. That's a pretty weak idea though.

Also I agree the upper right is clearly a building/cabin type structure. Wish more folks were speculating on the big red chair thing in the foreground on the lower right.

Not sure I see the blood cell stuff still... I guess part of it is I just think that'd be too boring of a type of image to put right on the cover of an account of the greatest disaster in history.

I agree it's boring, but that's all I can see in the image no matter how I look at it. Since the show has many biological motifs and eggs and reproduction are major themes in the series I think an egg might be appropriate - but it is still strange...

I don't see a cabin in the upper right, I see a signpost *shrug*. There is definitely a big black asterisk-shaped hole in the middle but I don't see why that means Lilith is there. I'm going to mess around with the blending more now.

It's a pity they took it out.
Some it was fast, but it was also pretty insighful...we didn't get these images (the more "clear"/relevant ones, for example the excavation of Adam, Yui in the suit, or the EVA's creation... ) anywhere else... Perhaps they thought it detracted from the impact of the Reiquarium?

Some of the images appear separately on the Test Type disk (e.g. Yui in her plugsuit).

I still don't see that at all, even after having it pointed out. Now it looks more like a bonfire pit surrounded by rocks.

The thing in the bottom right is just confounding. It's clearly soemthing mounted on a surface of some sort with a heavy bolted bracket of some kind, but what on earth is it? What is that surface and why does it cut off so abruptly?

I actually think it's a graveyard. I've circled a few things I noticed. Look at the picture from a bit of a distance, and things start popping out:

What's Ritsuko's line during this frame?

It's when she's saying the "hitori dake na" part; the 'only one that' part of the translated sentence "The only vessel that contained a soul was Rei", which happens to be the ending part of that sentence in Japanese.

My money is still on Lilith; it's just a theory of course but at least enough things fit to call it a plausible theory, I would think. It's relevant to the line, the general body proportions match the Lilith we see on the slab making Eva-01, there's an excavation vibe about it, and I think the latest photoshop only helps the case in that it makes a more defined head compared to the previous ones.

The only thing really bothering me is the image of the giant we see bending over itself, impaled by the Spear of Longinus at the beginning of this sequence... Here, Reichu identifies that one as Adam, which would eliminate it as a problem to my theory. However are we really sure that that is Adam?

And, yes, it is quite obvious that it is Adam, as the picture was taken during the excavation of Adam in Antarctica; further proof of this is the fact that the researchers in the foreground are wearing quite heavy clothing, the fact that Adam appears to be frozen, and the ice cliffs visible around Adam.

I think so too. I don't see where Lilith's head is supposed to be. The rest of the images that are shown in this sentence could be construed as representations of the material side of the mind/body duality, (a dissected brain, some bubbles and a schematic representation of some molecules). A generic graveyard would fit along side these images since the dead don't have souls.[/spoiler]

Dead bodies still possess souls in NGE, at least to a greater extent than do the tank Reis.

To be perfectly honest, I can't see shit in that image, and given the comical disparity between guesses in this thread, I'm inclined to suggest that the image remains, for all the photoshopping, essentially unintelligible.
