As promised, the piece is smaller than the previous two. The background is still relatively simple, but that's something I'm going to try to spend more time on in future pieces. (I just haven't had time to sit down and sketch out a decent background, so it's all been done entirely on the computer.) Anyway, I like the way this turned out. Now it's on to Shamshel, which I've actually already got sketched.

Not bad...!

GREAT, Xous! I think the background SHOULD be simple and out of focus. It keeps the focus on the subject and limits distractions.

Here are my contributions for the week. The volleyball one will appear in the webcomic.

Awesome.
I also hope there is more nudity and sexual tension in chapter five.

Better?

Awesome rendition of Sachirl there, Xous, and those are some nice images of Asuka, GrumannCat. Mmm, Asuka in a swimsuit. Oh, and Eva-01 getting washed off after a bloody battle, Wil? Pretty cool.

An Asuka of a different sort, doing a little Homestuck cosplay - when I remembered she was a Sagittarius, I had to do it!

D --> I'm not about to let a lowb100d like Ikari outperform me in an Eva! I'm the STRONG pilot.

Wish the pen I did it with wasn't trying to die half the time I was making it, got the color of the socks and shorts reversed, too.
Funnily enough, I was going to draw Post-3I Asuka or Shikinami as Vriska but... well, I'll probably do that soon enough.

That's an AWESOME pic if you ask me. Not NEARLY enough Mana fan art! I don't personally think the eyes are too big. There's a lot of latitude for big eyes in anime ;)

Here's another Asuka/Shinji pic that's definitely going in the webcomic.

Thanks! ^^

There will be fan service, but not nearly to the degree of the last chapter. The biggest section of fan service comes mid-chapter when the pilots square off for a match of beach volleyball. As you can see, Asuka dons her red and white bikini. ;)

There is something SERIOUSLY weird with the arms and faces and the way they are drawn. Too many curved lines, I think. Shinji's arm looks like it's got that disease where a parasite blocks off veins and traps blood in a limb that swells it. Asuka's nose is, like, sticking a bit far out. Just picking up technical details. Do you draw up grids to help you position? I find that especially useful.

Hmmm... I can see the problem with Shinji's arm being too wide where the elbow is, but I have to stand by the position and size of Asuka's nose this time. Regarding curves, well I prefer the old school Rumiko Takahashi style of lots of curves rather than the Sadamoto style of points and corners. (Not that I consider myself as good as Takahashi)

She's starting to open her hand from a fist to a slap.

I'm more concerned with the forshortening issues on her right forearm. I fussed with that over and over again, but still I'm not quite sure...

Somehow I like the sketch more... but this one is quite good -- perhaps it is the coloring and shadows..

  • Add a prop to the left, such as a brick wall or a picket fence on the background.
  • You have to use layers to separate your pencil sketch, the lines and the coloring, so that it's easy to make some touch-ups.
  • It's best that you make a sketch first on paper, to give a proper proportioning and pose (study the Newtype 100% artbook to get it right), and then scan and adjust brightness and contrast.
  • I wonder if you're using a stylus, and if you do, it's a lot easier sketching using SAI.
