You know, I really don't like the designs for most of the Decepticons in these films.
And no, this isn't because of G1 nostalgia. I didn't even grow up with G1.
I mean how almost all of them have the same bland color schemes and in the midst of fast-paced action and such, it gets rather hard to even tell them apart at times.
Not really a fan on how most act like generic monsters either.

Did Michael Bay realise the movie was going a bit long so he was just like, "fuck it, all the bad guys died for some reason, THE END".

Ugh. Every time I hear that man talk I want to instantly disagree with whatever he says regardless of if I agree with it or not. Brad's cool though, and I mostly agree with his assessment of the film.

Coming from someone who strongly dislikes Michael Bay films (The Rock and Armageddon in particular), who was kinda meh on the first TF flick and mostly unhappy with the second, and who thinks action films are generally (though not always) a waste of time and money in the best case:
It was pretty good, actually. The plot held together well (far better than it did in either of the other movies -- there were no blatant plot holes that rendered entire scenes pointless), the action sequences were easy to follow, there were no pointless human scenes (well, everything about Sam was pointless, but apart from that), and the comedy relief characters were relegated to the background. I enjoyed it.
Mind, I didn't love it -- the human characters were vapid and shallow as always (par for the course in Hollywood movies these days), the Decepticons were unforgivably weak, and there were some serious editing goofs (when the hell did Bumblebee and the others get captured, anyway?). It was not, by any stretch, a great movie. But it was far better than I expected, to the point where I think the criticism being levied against it is unfairly harsh.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

It was better than most people expected, because the expectations were so low, but that doesn't make it a good film, or make the criticism unfair.

True. I think the criticism is unfair based solely on its own merits (or lack thereof). I have plenty of my own, of course (see above), but the reviews C.A.P. linked are a good example of biased reporting at its worst.

Don't know what to tell ya. If the film's that awful it should be easy to pick it apart objectively (and of course, it is). If they can't be bothered to do that I can't be bothered to pay them any more mind than they do the industry they so loathe.

Being a critic is subjective. It's impossible to truly objectively review anything in media due to art and taste being subjective. Jim Sterling over at Destructoid did a great parody review when people gave him crap about his FF13 review being "too subjective".
As for Brad and Spoony: nitpicking is a valid form of criticism, if the minor details add up to detract from your overall enjoyment of a work that's a very big problem. But I wouldn't consider things like bitching about how 90% of the cast was comic relief or how the Transformers are supporting characters in their own movies, nitpicking.

It's not impossible to make the effort, though. That's what professional film critics try to do. Reviews like the ones you linked are fun and all if you've already decided you hate the movie, but if you haven't they're just a bunch of bile that does more to turn the viewer off of the critic than the film.
Such was my experience, anyway.

Neither of those is valid, though. Hell, both are far less true of this film than they were for both of its predecessors.

Reviews aren't supposed to be objective anyway. Pseudo-objective interpretation is what analyses are for. Reviews are intended to give the reader an idea as to whether or not he should watch the film, and they're often accompanied by some explanations as to what he could expect while watching it. There's obviously a lot of room for subjectivity there, but formal critiques and analyses generally entail a lot more effort, support, and thought than a review does.Bagheera wrote:It's not impossible to make the effort, though. There's a difference between a normal review and the internet tripe that passes for such these days, though.
Of course, I wind up dismissing even professional reviewers left and right as they often obviously aren't paying attention to the movie, so perhaps I'm more critical than most.
