Scientific classification of dragons

Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

Scientific classification of dragons

Me and some friends are creating a universe. We've already decided that there should be dragons. However, I'd like to have scientific names for the cute widdle dragoonies. I have two in mind, but both of them need some work.

NAMBAH WAN:
Kingdom: Animalia (Obviously)
Phylum: Chordata
Superclass: Tetrapoda
Class: Reptilia
Subclass: Diapsida
Order: Squamata
Family: ????
Genus: Draconis

OPSHUN TSU:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Sauropsida
Subclass: Diapsida
Infraclass: Lepidosauria
Order: Sphenodontia
Family: ????
Genus: Draconis

Does anyone have ideas for what Family dragons might belong to? Or maybe a different system altogether?

If you go with six-limbed dragons, you have to come up with a convincing explanation for how tetrapods could develop an additional set of limbs. (As if!) Four-limbed dragons are much simpler.

Squamata doesn't really scream "dragon potential" to me, unless you want a bunch of glorified giant lizards or snakes or something. You'd need a REALLY derived squamatid to achieve things like powered flight, and what sort of scenario would set them onto that evolutionary path in the first place? Might be better off looking into the immense world of extinct reptiles for a respectable dragon ancestor.

Also, only one genre?

Are you referring to different types of dragons? There's going to be several different species and subspecies. Draconis Occidentalis are European dragons, which have the subspecies rex Cristatus, splendens, and flameus (earth, water and fire dragons.) There are also Draconis orientalis for the Eastern lung species. Of course, other dragons, such as knuckers, wyverns and amphitheres.

As for everything else you said, that's why I need help. Draconis occidentalis rex Cristalis should probably have a similar ancestry to Komodo dragons and Gila monsters, since an earth dragon's young look very similar to the adult forms of the other two.

I'm kinda new at biology, in the off chance that you can't tell.
