Hana iroha phone, oreimo rail, anohana ramen

Postby symbv » Mon May 02, 2011 10:07 pm

In Japan there are all these fun ideas of linking Anime with Real Life

1. Hana Iroha

In Ep.1 a phone number was shown on a piece of paper that is supposed to be the phone number of the ryokan where Ohana works. A while ago if you called the number it would actually be answered by Ohana!!! And now if you called the number it would be answered by Nako!!! Toyasaki Aki !!! \^o^/

2. OreImo -- How many of you know that OreImo mainly takes place in Chiba city in Chiba prefecture. The landmark of Chiba city is the overhanging railroad system that you can see in the OP. Now OreImo is having a collaboration with Chiba Rail that runs that train system.

Here is the special ticket being sold under the title "ore no imouto ga chiba monoreiru no keifuku wo kiru wake ga nai" (there is no way my younger sister would wear the uniform of Chiba Monorail !)

Image

3. Ano Hana -- As I said before Ano Hana mainly takes place in the Chichifu area which is a hilly region in the west part of Saitama prefecture (and borders Tokyo in its south-east). The shops and tourist board there is all gearing up to take advantage of the growing popularity of the anime and begin to sell the place as the "Ano Hana location".

It is very clear that the nickname of the main female character "menma" is there to associate with the dry bamboo shoot that almost always come with a bowl of ramen. So here is a good example -- Menma being the showgirl for a local restaurant!

It took me a little while to get around to typing this up. Over my month-long absence, I was fairly productive and, as always, watched my girl cartoons in peace and quiet in between frantic periods of research and writing. I've spoilered my thoughts on the shows I watched over April for convenience to everyone that doesn't care (likely everyone except five or six of you).

I owe a big thanks Xard for already posting my Madoka review in the related thread. Before that I posted a brief couple of paragraphs memorializing the late Osamu Dezaki (;____;). They're on Forced Perspective in case anyone wants to check them out. I have a couple semi-ambitious projects lined up for that site in the near future, once I get my act together and start work on them.

And before all this, here's a question for mecha/Tomino/Gundam fans (namely Dr. Nick and TDSA): is Victory Gundam worth watching? I enjoyed Zeta but found ZZ somewhat tiresome to get through, if that info is good for any kind of reference.

SPOILER: Show
Sailor Moon
Watched the first three seasons so far. I should check out the manga when I get the chance since I’m especially curious how the series stacks up to it. I can’t believe the comic’s narrative is structured so much around monsters of the week, but hey, that’s part of the series charm, really.

First season is pretty awesome in its own campy early-90s way, but the last two episodes feature some unbelievably shitty pacing and writing. Second season was an improvement for the most part, featuring Ikuhara’s directing throughout the later three cours. I was a little underwhelmed by the result, but it was a solid effort nonetheless. Third season has been pretty kickass, though. First episode of S has been the best directed single episode of Sailor Moon so far, and in fact one of the best directed single eps of any series I’ve seen in awhile.

Also watched the Sailor Moon R film. It was pretty good, but I’m glad Ikuhara cranked up the drugs for Utena.

Nanoha A’s – I marathoned most of this show one Saturday. I liked it a lot more than the first series, actually. I think the more melodramatic writing was handled better than the tiresome, awkward parts of the first series’ last episode, and the production values seemed a bit better as well.

Kino’s Journey
I first watched this series a couple years ago and loved it, but only this past month did I get around to watching the related OVAs.

Life Goes On – a prequel to the series, it details her life after leaving her hometown but prior embarking on her journeys. Probably the weakest of the group, it focuses on portraying a character in a transition phase toward the character that the audience already knows as Kino. It does an alright job of it, too, while leaving the nature of her mentor to remain something of a mystery.

Tower Country – stands among the best individual episodes of the series, maintaining all the mystery and Twilight Zone-like ambiguity. Like much of the series, it’s hard not to feel the tension in the location she rides into, which is one of the best aspects to the whole material.

Land of Sickness ~ For You – my body wasn’t ready for near-naked Kino. That was by far the highlight of the piece. The rest was pretty cool, and this OVA has the best production values of the batch.

Misc. films/OVAs of note:

Tailenders – animation explosion of badassery and ludicrousness. Something about giant moving cities and a race to the ends of a terraformed post-apocalpytic Earth, but plot doesn’t matter much. Whole reason I watched it is because my excitement and anticipation for Redline is becoming impossible to quell. This was mentioned somewhere (along with Trava, which I’ve already seen) as being something along similar lines, and I guess I can see why. Shitcrazy doped up racers with mechanical alien bodies cruising around while everything explodes sums up the film. The ending is pretty kickass.

Eureka Seven: Pocket Full of Rainbows – holy shit this was fucking terrible. The series was bad, but jezus, this was above and beyond “bad”. I can’t believe Bones actually produced this piece of shit. Character development? Narrative tension? Romance? No. I give the film kudos for demolishing all of the things that E7 did poorly, but getting rid of them altogether doesn't make a good film. In fact, it makes a film in which one nonsensical scene is proceeded by another equally incomprehensible and ludicrous scene, casting all sense of narrative development to the winds while trying to maintain an air of climactic urgency that lacks all context, featuring characters who act in ways the viewer can't understand, and filled with dialogue that might as well have been written by a thirteen year old. This is one magnificent clusterfuck of a movie that managed to take the already disappointing Eureka Seven and grind it up into an abysmal sack ridiculous garbage.

RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio – as film-versions of series go, it was a lot better than the astoundingly horrible E7 film, but that’s not saying much. It wasn’t as good as the series, and I have to wonder why it was even made.

Genius Party – I doubt I have to say much about this since it’s already so well-known. It shouldn’t have taken me so long to get to it but… ehhhh. Shit was cash, to say the least. Yuasa's segment was one of my favorites, as was Kawamori's (I wish I had a magic crystal like that). There's a substantial amount that could be said about each short film, actually, but I don't have the effort to get into that right now.

The Cockpit – Was primarily interested in Kawajiri’s segment (the first part), which actually turned out to be the best part. The other two were somewhat mediocre in execution, though they had good—if lolMatusmoto—stories to them. But the first segment did an excellent job capturing that ridiculously melodramatic, vaguely badass noir atmosphere that tends to define Matsumoto’s flair for tragedy. Plus, shit man, dat Focke-Wulf interceptor is awesome all on its own.

La Maison en Petits Cubes and The Apple Incident – two short films by Kunio Kato. The former’s reputation speaks for itself, and for good reason. The animation and artwork alone are worth it for a watch. The story’s somewhat cliché, but whatever. The later though, man what the fuck. The Apple Incident was a trip.

Gundam F-91 – Tomino-Dark. Things were a bit rushed, but the plot was actually better paced than Char’s Counterattack (even though I think CCA is a better movie all around).

Thoughts on currently airing shows:

Hanasaku Iroha – promising, and a case of “came for the plot, stayed for the scenery porn”. The premise isn’t bad either, and the execution has surpassed whatever expectations I initially set for it. But the backgrounds, setting, and atmosphere of the work is really what keeps me watching it.

Nichijou – LOL SO RANDOM XDDDDD… yet really well animated. "Azumanga Diaoh on more drugs" is the best way I've seen it described, and I have to agree. I think the interjections are what I like most about it, aside from its animation; the jump rope sequences, the unexplained shots of ambient locales, etc. serve well as divisions between the snapshot-like skits.

Ano Hana yada yada – currently tied with Iroha as my favorite of the season. This has a lot of potential for being a solid character drama, and with A-1 Pictures producing, it looks great too. I originally picked this title up because of Tatsuyuki Nagai’s involvement, since I was reasonably impressed with his direction of the Railgun series. This is an entirely different sort of show than Railgun, but his ability to depict character interactions is of even better quality here than it was on the former title.

[C] Money of the Soul – what the hell—digimon with money, shit man what is this. Animation has been pretty rough (CGI characters… ow… dat mannequin-like movement, it’s like I’m watching Reboot all over again). Director Kenji Nakamura is showing a bit more restraint than he has on some previous works (Mononoke, Trapeze), but this show is still pretty strange.

Deadman Wonderland – I didn’t know what to expect out of this title, but I’ve been disappointed thus far. I can’t stand the main character at all, and I keep waiting for the mysterious girl to have some of her character flushed out a bit more. It’s got enough ambiguity going for it that it might come out to be alright, so I don’t intend on dropping it yet. It’s just been shit so far.

Anime studio is ufotable and the director (I think) is supposed to be the same guy that did Hourou Musuko and the first Kara no Kyoukai film. :w00t:

I've been pumped for this since I first heard it announced. :)

I thought it was ufotable?

Hopefully today I finally get around finishing my post on Sayonara no Tsubasa. I wrote quite a big one back in Japan but my laptop crashed and I lost it in process (though some drafts I had luckily saved) and I've been either too tired, busy or lazy to get back to it after getting back home...and now it's over a week since I left Japan already. About time I finish that stuff -____-'

Meanwhile all airing anime continues to be uninteresting to me (unfortunate side effect of my trip). As far as I can tell only that new NoitaminA show and Nichijou are worth it, but I haven't even watched their latest episodes yet.

oh, and toe mash asked me on MAL about the way OreImo has dropped from 9 to 7.

Well really, that's very common for me. Since OreImo's (too) high rating depended on large extent on how much its look on otaku culture bemused me and how moe Kuroneko was it was pretty inevitable that once the initial flurry of positive feelings recede (and I'm reminded just how much more I like greenhaired mahou shoujo idoru in comparison to snarky goth lolis ;PPPP) the huge flaws and problems in the series would start to bear a larger influence. I didn't get around re-evaluating the score before seeing Sayonara, which triggered mass re-evaluation of quite a few titles. OreImo happened to be one of them. Other "victims" include Fractale dropping to 5 and if I get really nasty it might go down all the way to "4" aka "crap".

Nessa saves it for now though...

but I should add that 7-Good is still, uhh, good in my eyes. So it's not like I'm rubbing OreImo to dirt here. Change just reflects the fact it isn't exactly great series.

It's rare for me to actually up scores later on, usually they come down (like PSG came down to 9 and might go down to 8 eventually, Madoka I haven't yet rated but it isn't 10/10 like I felt for quite a while when series aired). That's why animu that manages to maintain its rating or get better one after time from seeing it has passed and/or I rewatch it are ones I think really highly of.

^ Reading above makes me all the more relieved that I never bother with scoring anime

That said, I think OreImo has held up pretty well for me, and if anything the recent kuroneko arc ups my evaluation a little bit more.

As for current season, "not worth it" means not worth the time to watch it at all? Since anime is more like daily entertainment for me, I always manage to find "worth" in the anime I watch :) At the moment, I am still going for the following AND ENJOYING IT:

- Ano Hana
love the story, animation well done, thoughtful character design
- Hana Iroha
love the story too, animation not as good as above but still good, interesting characters
- Dog Days
I love the all fun and no harm done mock battles between moe characters, is it really going to be like this till the end? good animation too
- Nichijou
the best animation this season, the best OP this season, humor hit-or-miss but when it works it is deadly hilarious, and moe bomb can be lethal too
- Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
very dialogue focused anime, memorable main character, addictive OP, animation can be very good at times
- AstraLotte no Omocha
vast improvement over the original manga on pacing, story streamlining and pleasant surprise in focusing on the character development of Lotte and her relationship with others, DUAL LOLI BOMBS are super-powerful!!!
- Steins;Gate
very intriguing story that is set to be getting more complex over each episode, some of the most interesting characters in this season, can just pull you in if you are willing to spend the time with it - even if you have not played the game
- Hidan no Aria
more moe than I expected, but still pretty good OP and action scenes. The MC looks competent too, unlike the other kugikyu anime Zero no Tsukaima, but at the end it is Aria that I go to watch...
- A Channel
a decent moe slice-of-life comedy that is willing to spend time to look at how the 4 girls form bond with each other amid many comedic happenings
- Seikon no Qweaser II
need I say more? SOMA~~~~~!!!
- Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa nai
an anime in urban setting that is based on an adult visual novel; 3 main male characters and a big support cast give it some diversity to intertwine plots and create amusing situation; some fan service but not as much as I thought
- Hoshizora he kakaru Hashi
an anime in countryside setting that is based on an adult visual novel; seems to be "Yosuga no Sora" without the angst, incest and explicit sex; a feel-good adult anime?
- MariaHolic Alive
the crazy fun continues...
- Gosick
do not feel too strongly about this anime but Victorique is a reason to keep watching
- Kami no mizo shiru sekai II
the last arc is better than most of the arcs in first season, and now Haqua has joined the fray!! Everybody needs to know why Haqua helped save the original manga from falling into oblivion...
- [C] got an uneasy feeling watching this, perhaps the "financial world" and its inhabitants look quite odd; may or may not finish it

Thinking of picking up because of good reviews

- Dorororon
- Tiger & Bunny
- Deadman Wonderland
- Blue Exorcist

Even I find the following a bit hard to feel enthusiastic about:

- MoshiDora
- SofuTeni

Also did not continue watching

- Kaiji II
- 30 year old sex education

I just finished Mazinkaiser SKL. Just when you thought this couldn't get any metal-y-er it grabs you by the head and crushes you in the balls with extreme prejudice. This demands a sequel, 'nough said.

Supposedly, Tomino tried to kill the entire entire Gundam franchise with Victory. I don't know how much truth there is to this claim, but Victory is a pretty fun series to watch, if you think of it as an epic trolling battle between Tomino and Sunrise.

If you've soldiered through Zeta and Double Zeta, you pretty much know what to expect in the craziness department. There's not much slapstick comedy like in ZZ, but there's a lot of humor that stems from outright bizarre mechanical designs and world-building. There are diarrhea beams, insect robots kicking Gundams in the nuts and a naked escape from Space Castle Wolfenstein, and all of these things are treated as serious business by the characters. People are annoying and make suicidally stupid decisions, cyber-newtype enhancements turn people crazy, unexplained things happen, and pointless side-characters die screaming. For maximum hilarity, watch G-Saviour afterwards.

Just out of curiosity, are you going to watch any of the Alternate Universe Gundam series once you've completed your UC run?

is Victory Gundam worth watching?

It is one of the best anime of all time, the best Universal Century Gundam anime, and the second best Gundam anime overall only after SEED Destiny. The only reason I don't rank this series over Neon Genesis is due to the fact that the music is highly unfitting. People think Zeta, Wing, or 0080/3 are dark I smack them in the head and point to Victory, it's EASILY the darkest gundam anime out there.

You forgot the bikini girls with ray guns scene. The strangest thing in any Gundam.

Whoa, thems fightin' words in the SM community.

Hey Mer, if you're going to continue the show, hear me out; don't let the Internet fool you into thinking the next season, SuperS, is a piece of crap (then again, it's because almost every fan prefers the manga's version because of the lack of constant comedy). They're right that the grim tone of S pretty much disappeared once it was done (and we fans have our theories why that is, right SSD? :p), but that doesn't mean there's merits to the thing. For example, not only does SuperS contains the best mixure of new music cues in the whole show, but it also has some of the best characterizations of the villains, where almost all of the big villains seem to actually have lives outside the screen. So yeah, very underrated season, and I hope the repetitive slapstick won't tire you out after 7 or so episodes in a row, because there's good stuff if you look for them.

Stars is hit and miss though, but that's becuase Ikuhara left because of vague details (apparently one of the original producers left, and Ikuhara decided to join him), so Takuya Igarashi ended up supervising that season. Whenever or not you'll like that season will, again, depend on how much formula you can take.

Ikuhara also didn't direct the other two movies (someone by the name of Hiroki Shibata did, and he would later go on to direct Bobobo), so be prepare for the lack of Ikuhara quirks.

First week BD sales of Puella Magi Madoka Magika Vol.1 has finally been announced. It sold around 53000, thus breaking the record previously held by Bakemonogatari Vol.6 which was 51000. PMMM vol.1 now holds the record for the bestselling tv anime title in terms of BD/DVD sales. It remains to be seen if it can eventually beat Bakemonogatari in terms of final total sales or even break the 100k line.

This also means that Shaft+Shinbo now hold the top 2 spots for bestselling tv series anime titles.

So update for the up-to-date BD+DVD sales for anime aired in the last season (the number next to the total sales figure is the number of weeks it has been released)

This weeks Steins;Gate was really good.
SPOILER: Show
I was also pleased to see I'd been right about the part-time girl at the TV repair shop. I knew there was something up with her.

Guhhh, yeah. For someone as improvisational and unsystematic as I am I have this bizarre obsession with creating and tweaking all kinds of lists. I can easily waste hours making a playlist, not to mention all kinds of "top X" lists... Numerical ratings, as vague reasons for them can get, help with this.

View Original Postsymbv wrote:That said, I think OreImo has held up pretty well for me, and if anything the recent kuroneko arc ups my evaluation a little bit more.

Well because that's counted separatedly on MAL I do that too... it's better than tv series, certainly

View Original Postsymbv wrote:As for current season, "not worth it" means not worth the time to watch it at all? Since anime is more like daily entertainment for me, I always manage to find "worth" in the anime I watch :) At the moment, I am still going for the following AND ENJOYING IT

It's question of me not seeing anything I won't forget in few months (and which won't leave any kind of lasting, meaningful impression). AnoHana, HanaIroha and Nichijou seem to be only potential exceptions to this but AnoHana is fugly, HanaIroha gave rather unenjoyable vibe for first two episodes I've seen and...well Nichijou seems to be best bet.

Apart from that I see nothing worth the effort that goes to downloading and watching them. C in particular is so ungodly UGLY I want to have nothing to do with it.

The only reason I don't rank this series over Neon Genesis is due to the fact that the music is highly unfitting.

reading these two one after another was pretty awesome :hahaha:

It's TDSA (or to be even more to the point)

a) what would you expect, really?
b) don't forget to apply the relevant "lolTDSA" mental filters while reading these posts
