The last few episodes kind of dragged on, but the finale was cool.

Yeah, the first 3 episodes were incredible and reminded me that some anime can actually make me laugh. I recommend you stop now while TWGOK looked like it was gonna be the best anime of the season and just skip on to S2
Lets see what you'll think, but imo later on it took a serious dip in quality and just dragged on instead of making fun 2 ep arcs, although the last episode is great.
Finished Hakaba Kitarou. At first it sucked me in with really trippy writing and glorious art design, but its charm died really quickly. Its occasional "slice of life" doesn't work that well as most of the episodic stories are just bizarre, weak. The main storyline is forgotten somewhere along the way and it never had anything tangible to begin with. Gloriously directed, but the writing is really disappointing in the end. After the promising first episode the whole series fell down and never stood back up again.

"No you wouldn't. Oz's secret is he goes without food to buy that stuff. He hasn't eaten in years." - Brikhaus
"Often I get the feeling that deep down, your little girl is struggling with your embrace of filmfaggotry and your loldeep fixations, and the conflict that arises from such a contradiction is embodied pretty well in Kureha's character. But obviously it's not any sort of internal conflict that makes the analogy work. It's the pigtails." - Merridian
"Oh, Oz, I fear I'm losing my filmfag to the depths of Japanese pop. If only there were more films with Japanese girls in glow-in-the-dark costumes you'd be the David Bordwell of that genre." - Jimbo
"Oz, I think we need to stage an intervention and force you to watch some movies that aren't made in Japan." - Trajan

I didn't think the slice of life stuff was that bad. The manga was mostly slice of life comedy with a similar art style. Was still kind of a patchwork writing for a short series though. The original anime adaptations (from 1968, 78, 85, and 96) were all really long series (100+ episodes each IIRC). There was also one in 2007 but I don't know anything about that one. The 2008 adaptation wasn't a continuation of the older series, so it seemed they just lifted a bunch of short story arcs and made it a short anime series, that's what made it seem so inconsistent. There never really was a central storyline.
I know that the manga and older anime are longer and I sort of figured out that was the exact reason it felt so lacking in the writing department. It's one of those series I will completely forget about in a month or two.

I recently watched an 80's OVA movie called Battle Royal High School.
Pretty bad, but pretty enjoyable.
A trailer I saw made a bullet point out of this anime being directed by the same guy who did Angel Cop, Ichiro Itano. Which should say one or two things about what to expect. Though the tone in this one radically different and though we're spared the right-wing extremism, the completely non-sensical clusterfuck of a story, the violence porn and the crazy detailed animation all feels very familiar.
The story is about this really buff high school kid and martial arts expert, who one day meets his inter-dimensional doppleganger who happens to be an evil overlord. They merge.
Then there's a sword wielding bishie, an evil fairy queen and guy from space wearing a robo-suit.
The highlight of the movie is no doubt this one rather brief scene where one of the main characters love interests (who just got splattered) is magically reconstructed from the inside out. It manages to be both beautiful and horrifying in all it's graphic detail. Truly an exquisite piece of animation.
Overall, it's pretty bad but pretty enjoyable.
Another anime that I've been watching, one that you could say I've been in the process of watching ever since 2007, is Macross 7. I just can't seem to make it through this show, for many reasons no doubt, but the one that comes off the top of my head is Basara. He's truly an infuriating character, I don't want to hear his fucking song, not for the four billionth time.
I really want to get through this show because I want to see all of Dynamite 7 which I actually started watching accidentally, thinking that it was the TV series. If this had actually been the case, Macross 7 would have been something else.
If there's one thing I really like about this show, it's probably the visuals. The animation kinda sucks, but things like the character design and overall style is very nice.
Where was Haruhiko Mikimoto when Macross Frontier happened?
