Just found something pretty cool in one of the 2.0 storyboard books (which are part of the CRC, I guess). Don't feel like making scans or shitty photos right now, so a lousy translation will have to do.
This is a cut excised from the end of Misato's flashback montage.
C402I
赤くなっている地球
南極_かる血のりが吹き出している
リング状にも広がっていく
血のり
広がった血のりが
月に付く
しぶきも飛ぶ
The Earth turning red
Blood* spouts from the South Pole
The blood spreads out into a ring
The dissipated blood stains the Moon.
The splash/spray flies up.
*Literally "stage/fake blood", assuming that's what 血のり means here.
Really wish they'd included this, but I guess keeping the audience trolled was more important?

Perhaps Khara cut out that shot because the wanted to go another direction with how they blood reached the moon/flooded the earth? Or they somehow found it, uh, unimportant. >_> ("Trolling" is finding its way far too easily into descriptions nowadays...)
Thanks anyway Reicchan, very interesting stuff!

Comparing the final storyboard directly to concept design drafts isn't really valid, except in the really general "it didn't make it into the final product" kind of way.
The excised cut is interesting since it flat-out shows something that is hinted at anyway (we already know 2I made the seas red, and Maya compares Sachiel's suicide puddle to 2I, therefore......), albeit blithely ignored by so very many.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense, but I don't think this evidence is really going to convince anybody. Obviously they'd just say that everybody's had their memories altered or whatever.
But anyway, the reason people think that is because we see a black moon during NME's Second Impact. So more EoE-ish elements in the movie would just convince them even further, I suppose.

Regardless, Reichu's translation -
- shows that Khara approached the flashback sequence with the intent of explaining 1.xx's EoE references as part of a new continuity, i.e., not a sequel.
Edit: Said scene could have been scrapped for any number of reasons, and in my opinion 2.xx does fine without it.

Do these books give a a complete breakdown of who storyboarded the different parts of the film? Or at least a general idea? 2.0 had a very large number of storyboard artists (10 or so) which is very unusual for a film. This collaborative approach seems similar to the Anno/Tsurumaki productions that followed Eva but so far the interviews haven't revealed much about the work process except that Higuchi was surprised at how different his storyboard was from the final result re: Asuka.

It's a "black hole" (kuroi ana) that appears as a point over the South Pole and visibly gets bigger.
(Compare to this.)
...I really need to add this crap to the Wiki's 2I page already.
@Noriko: The storyboard books don't credit the individual artists.

Interesting, thanks for the .gif. I guess that sequel theory image that originated on /a/ needs to be corrected. Hell, maybe you should make an anti-sequel theory image with some of this information. :p
Is the term "black hole" from the storyboards? That's great ammo to debunk some of this crap.

Given the horrific memetic persistence of those images, it might not be a bad idea...

Yep. (Original is 黒い穴)

Indeed. A lot of that stuff on the current iteration of the image is pretty easy to debunk if the NME-2I = NGE-3I thing in the toilet. (But this is probably a bit off-topic.) (Never mind, there was a split!)
No relation to a plain ol' ブラックホール, I take it. (That might be a liiiiittle bad for the Earth. )

The arguments for looked pretty decent back when 1.0 was the only movie out, but it's looking more and more unlikely as time goes on. The only things I still find strange are Kaworu's mysterious lines, but it's been suggested that NME Shinji knew him as a child or something. I bet Anno be trollin'. (Or maybe he has no idea people are interpreting things this way? Does sequel theory even exist in Japanese fandom?)
