Blackout Angels swam with me

I see a heavy relation with Shinji's implied attempt at suicide at the beginning of EoE, not to mention it's where he met kaworu at the decapitated angel statue.

Definitely, definitely "Pyramid Song" during the Instrumentality: "All my lovers were there with me/All my past and futures/And we all went to heaven in a little rowboat/There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt."

I can't be the first person to remark on this, but actually, the imagery in the official video for "Pyramid Song" is Eva-esque, don't you think?

Speaking of Radiohead...

How to Disappear Completely reminds me a lot of Shinji.

Okay... As I'm playing 30 Seconds to Mars while writing, I end up with two more picks for the inevitable reinterpretation of EoE.

First, Attack might be Asuka's theme song soon:
SPOILER: Show
I won't suffer, be broken, get tired, or wasted
Surrender to nothing, or give up what I
Started and stopped it, from end to beginning
A new day is coming, and I am finally free

Run away, run away, I'll attack
Run away, run away, go chase yourself
Run away, run away, now I'll attack
I'll attack, I'll aa-WHOOOAAAAAAAAA

I would have kept you, forever, but we had to sever
It ended for both of us, faster than a
Kill off this thinking, it's starting to sink in
I'm losing control now, and without you I can finally see

Run away, run away, I'll attack
Run away, run away, go chase yourself
Run away, run away, now I'll attack
I'll attack, I'll aa-WHOOOAAAAAAAAA

Your promises, they look like lies
Your honesty, like a back that hides a knife (knife)
I promise you (promise you)
I promise you (promise you)
And I am finally free

Run away, run away, I'll attack
Run away, run away, go chase yourself
Run away, run away, now I'll attack
I'll attack, I'll attack, I will attack

Run away, I'll attack, I will attack
Run away, I'll attack, I will attack

Run away (Run away), I'll attack (I'll attack)
I'll aa-WHOOOAAAAAAAAA

Your promises
(promises, promises)
I promise you
(promise you)
I promise you
(promise you, promise you)

Second, A Beautiful Lie seems fitting for Shinji:
SPOILER: Show
Lie awake in bed at night
And think about your life
Do you want to be different?
Try to let go of the truth
The battles of your youth
'Cause this is just a game

[Chorus:]
It's a beautiful lie
It's the perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful it makes me

It's time to forget about the past
To wash away what happened last
Hide behind an empty face
Don't ask too much, just say
'Cause this is just a game

[Chorus]

(Oh Oh
The end of the world)

Everyone's looking at me
I'm running around in circles, baby
A quiet desperation's building higher
I've got to remember this is just a game

(So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful...)

[Chorus]

There's this album in which some friends of what was my music Maestro, formed an ensamble with barroque instruments to play Bach as it should have been. It's called the Rare Fruits Council. And I used to listen to it heavily during the times when I got into Eva discussion. Everytime I listen to it I remember my feelings during that time, Rei and Brazil.

All of OK Computer as well as Kid A is like an alternate soundtrack for Eva.

I'd say The Bends reminds me more of Eva than OK Computer on an album level.

Looking For Today, by Black Sabbath.

I don't know why, but when I read the lyrics for the first time, I suddenly remembered of Asuka:

"It's complete but obsolete
All tomorrow's become yesterday
In demand but second hand
It's been heard before you even play

Up to date but came too late
Better get yourself another name
You're so right but overnight
You're the one who has to take the blame

Everyone just gets on top of you
The pain begins to eat your pride
You can't believe in anything you knew
When was the last time that you cried

Don't delay you're in today
But tomorrow is another dream
Sunday's star is Monday's scar
Out of date before you're even seen

At the top so quick to flop
You're so new but rotting in decay
Like butterfly so quick to die
But you're only looking for today

Everyone just gets on top of you
The pain begins to eat your pride
You can't believe in anything you knew
When was the last time that you cried
Looking for today

Glamour trip so soon to slip
Easy come but oh how quick it goes
Ten foot tall but what to fall
Hard to open yet so easy to close
Front page news but so abused
You just want to hide yourself away
Over-paid, but soon you fade
Because you're only looking for today
Looking for today"

Maybe mostly because of the "The pain begins to eat your pride" part.

Shot Down in Flames - Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn (From Silent Hill Origins if I remember rightly).

I just listened to it again after a while, and it really reminded me of the Komm, Susser Tod scene. Has a fairly apocalyptic, all-hope-lost feel to it in my opinion and I couldn't help but imagine how Third Impact might have gone if that song was playing instead.

I only just noticed, this song is 100% Asuka/Shinji

At first I also thought that, but after listening to it a thousand times, I tend to see more Kaji/Misato.

Anyways, I always see EVA Units singing this in my head:

I can't escape this hell
So many times i've tried
But i'm still caged inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
(This animal, this animal)

I can't escape myself
(I can't escape myself)
So many times i've lied
(So many times i've lied)
But there's still rage inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal

Somebody help me through this nightmare
I can't control myself
Somebody wake me from this nightmare
I can't escape this hell

(This animal, this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal)

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal

I just pictured Eva-00 singing while dancing with a top hat and cane. And chibi Eva-02 chiming in for the parts in parenthesis.

Thank you.

Give Me Something by Scars On 45
lyrics:
SPOILER: Show
I carved your name
In an old, old tree,
But the council chopped it down
Because it was filled with disease.

And I sent you a thousand messages,
But not a single one got through...

Please,
Give me something;
Something to hold on to.
Give me something,
That links me to you.
Give me something;
Something to hold on to,
And I'll wear your wedding ring for a lifetime.

I?ve seen a place
Where your fingers lock with mine.
But the view it disappeared,
As my alarm clock hit the time.

And I've made a million wishes now,
But not a single one?s come true...

Please,
Give me something;
Something to hold on to.
Give me something,
That links me to you.
Give me something;
Something to hold on to,
And I'll wear your wedding ring for a lifetime.

Please,
Give me something;
Something to hold on to.
Give me something,
That links me to you.

Give me something;
Something to hold on to.
Give me something,
That links me to you.

Give me something...
Give me something...
Give me something...
Give me something...

The person in the song is pleading for something he can hold on too to remember his girlfriend (or maybe his wife?). And a lot of characters hold on to something ;
Shinji: S-Dat, cello
Misato: Cross necklace from her father
Rei: Commander Ikari's glasses, Shinji's S-Dat
Asuka: her mother's doll, to some extent unit 02
Ritsuko: cats, Magi (after all each one has a part of her mother's personality)
Commander Ikari: Rei, Unit 01

I came all the way from 1981 to mention "Radio Tokyo" by Marvelous 3.

SPOILER: Show

Seven hours later
She takes the elevator
To the second floor
To the underground committee

That's where they'll decide if
You'll be praised or you'll be tied up
On the bathroom floor
As you scream for more

All the souls are dying
While some idiots are trying
To convince you that they're cooler
But they still don't know
They're about to lose control
And they'll be saying now

Calling Radio Tokyo
The lines are down, you're good to go
Now this is real
Can't you feel
Calling Radio Tokyo
The kids are feeling way too low
They're on their knees
Won't somebody please just bring 'em home?

...

Seven hours later
They stopped the elevator
To the second floor
And there was no more

The song is pretty clearly about being a rock star, but little flashes in the lyrics like the "underground committee" that decides your fate, "the kids are feeling way too low," "all the souls are dying while some idiots are trying to convince you that they're cooler," "and there was no more" made me think of Eva from the first time I heard it, and now I can't un-hear the connections.

I may head on over to the welcome thread later, but in any case it seems like a nice place you've got here.
