This episode was almost good enough for katanagatari to compete with psg for the spot of my favorite anime of the year, oh well it certainly earned it a second place slot. But yeah this was a beautiful ending to the show, certainly the best episode it had.

Oh hey, a fight scene in Star Driver that lasted for more than one development. Was actually pretty good.

Also, calling it now, Sugata and Takuto are half-brothers and Head's their dad.

Seeing how many people liked Katanagatari, I´m watching it too now.

Episode 1 and 2 were cool.
It´s a pity that I have to catch up on Katanagatari this late.

I actually just finished Samurai Champloo and I must say, its pretty good. A little weird at times, and does not make a whole lot of sense, but still a good and fun anime to watch.

Katanagatari episode 1-3: Very nice. Although I thought episode 3 was a little weaker than the other 2. Also I don't really get how the thousand blade sword works, lol. Do all the other replicas now disappear or something?

Also it's funny how the score for this series shoots up every hour on MAL, heh.

Awww... are you saying Kirino goes way beyond where any Tsundere has gone before, and trespasses into b1tch territory? I think I have seen up to ep.10...

Mardock Scramble was... well, my reaction was pretty much, "This looks kinda interesting... but I don't really understand what's going on."

I thought it was a case of me failing at Nihongo, but apparently my Japanese friend had the same reaction. We ended up buying the novels.

BTW, they had some posters up for a Macross F movie supposedly hitting the theaters in 2011, with Ranka looking all cute and moe. Is this a second movie?

Well I think ep 11 hasn't even been subbed yet. And yeah, Kirino can be a total bitch. I don't think even I would be that bad if I was tsundere imouto... :P

You haven't seen the first one yet? Well, as you're in Japan you should just go and buy Itsuwari no Utahime because it's totally awesome :D

And yeah, the second film that concludes* the "MacrossF: DYRL Version" Sayonara no Tsubasa will hit theaters in February 2011

*  SPOILER: Show
and they should be resolving the triangle too this time around unless Kawamori is being asshole troll once again...

I gather you saw the Ranka as magical girl artwork?

Also:

While hanging out in the lobby, along with a few young geeks, a number of 40-ish men who were clearly old-school fans, and a whole lotta high school girls, I stood near the "Wings of Farewell" Ranka-as-Magical-Girl poster. Four high school girls walked up to it, cooing, "Kawaii!" And then they took pictures of it. I guess we now know what demographic that poster appeals to.

Who the fuck is Keito and why should I care about her?

And Mizuno's awesome. I rank her and Marino over Wako both, albeit I like all three.

Fish Girl is unapproachable awesome, of course.

By the way, last thursday and friday I rewatched the show from ep 1 to latest (!!) and I have to say it was damn well worth it. I had missed (how many got The Little Prince allusions anyway on the first watch?) and forgot (Takuto came to island to search for his father...) incredibly many little pieces of information and subtetlies. In retrospect I have to say it's damn well put together. Awesome, in fact.

Ishigara, Enokido and BONES own. I can't wait the second cour with new OP etc. because it already feels like this is destined to be best thing airing this fall. And animu ALWAYS gets more intense and suteki on second half, yo.

Head is great. It's either him or Kanako who is my favourite among the "villains".

Seen first two eps of Katanagatari and goddamn, this is by FAR the most hipster anime of 2010. I really dig it.

Xard's OVA Corner

As I might've mentioned before I've watched huge pile of OVAs during last two-three weeks or so. Most of the time I've just jumped in without knowing anything about the title and in cases where I did know something about OVA my knowledge rarely went above "I've heard this is awesome/this should be ungodly piece of lulzy garbage" level. I have thing for lol80s sillyness and corny, hamfisted OVA boom shit that is the most glorious explosion of pulp fiction in any medium in decades. So far I've also favoured one shot or very short OVA titles because it's quicker to consume many separate titles that way and if they're shitty I won't have to suffer for long. As I've been slowly but surely been running out of schlocky one shots (looks like I have to get into bizarre hentai at this rate, gahh) the lenght of titles in question has been rising. I've also been getting into some newer, 2000-10 stuff in comparison to usual fare of 80s and early 90s.

In any case I'm going to subject you to bunch of minireviews of these immortal artworks. Hopefully something raises your curiosity enough to make you discover and live through fascinating experiences through this glorious medium known as chinese cartoons :)

I'm using MAL scale so the ranks go like this:

10 - Masterpiece
9 - Great
8 - Very Good
7 - Good
6 - Fine
5 - Average
4 - Bad
3 - Very Bad
2 - Horrible
1 - Unwatchable

It's been difficult to rank some of these titles due to their pulpness and lolwut japanness. For example in the past I've given Angel Cop ranking 8/10 aka very good because it was just so awesome fun. But on the other hand it was absolutely ridiculous, antisemitistic jingoistic piece of flaming glorious nippon shit with character designs out of 80s hair metal band and unforgettable dialogue - and not in the NisiOisin sense. Taken seriously it's pretty bad, to say the least. Yet some other titles that I've enjoyed "ironically" and in a "hip" way (if you catch my drift) I've given bad scores. So it's not like my numerical ratings form completely coherent whole.

But oh well, who cares about numerical ratings anyway? Only thing you need to know everything I've given 7 is genuinely worth checking out (no need for "lolOVA BOOM" attitude at all!) and 6 is fine too. Though I've enjoyed the most many of more badly ranked titles ;)

Some of these count also as short films (e.g. Kobu-tori) but I've included them anyway. Music videos and the two long films, avantgarde classic Belladonna of Sadness and Crystal Triangle have been excluded.

These reviews are in chronological order (in order I've seen them that is):
SPOILER: Show

Call Me Tonight (1986)

For some reason I never noticed this title was featured in Buried Treasures so I went in knowing nothing but the ludicruous setup. First OVA in "Pink Shock" series (series of fanservicey OVAs in late 80s) it's heroine is high school girl Rumi...who owns/works at small phone sex club. One evening she is contacted by a guy who claims whenever he faps he blacks out and turns into a terrible monster. Like any logical person Rumi is fascinated and wants to meet his client face to face! And so they meet at local cafe, the nice guy Ryou ends up turning into a monster and causing a scene. Like any logical person Rumi becomes even MORE fascinated by Ryou following this instance of metamorphosis and decides to cure him by overexposing him to all sorts of eroticism (this leads to most creative instance of cramming tentacle porn into anime I've ever seen. Reading porn mags with tentacle monster is also event worth mentioning). There were other rational people in the cafe too, including Rumi's classmate Oyumi, leader of her own gang of biker ruffians and her muscular, looks-like-a-man sister Maki who also get interested in Ryou for their own...reasons. /d/ fetishes might have something to do with it.

In any case whole thing plays out as one of the most absurd, LOLWTF inducing more-clever-than-it-has-any-right-to-be satires I've seen in anime. It's sidesplittingly hilarious and perverted and weird enough to get full points on fanservice and lol80s scale. BGM is hilariously aged synth shit, art and animation are pretty good for the era too. Call Me Tonight is basically pretty clever, surprisingly experimental satire build around 80s ridiculousness and fanservice.

In short: it's some funny shit

7/10

Gakuen Tokusou Hikaruon (1987)

aka Campus Investigator Hikaruon was second OVA in Pink Shock series and since I can't remember any tits from it it propably had least amount of fanservice in the series. I really don't feel like describing anything about the plot for this one as the most enjoyable thing about this title was how it betrayed my expectations build around the title and headed for some truly unpredictable WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN and lolwtf territories...which won't be even remotely as out-of-the-leftfield-enjoyable if you know what the OVA was about. Suffice to say there have been many mysterious deaths at one local high school. Guy named Hikaru seems like normal first at first glance but is investigator working on the case. Some girl savan' and gang fightan' later bizarre shit starts to happen.

Hikaruon was damn enjoyable title with reasonably developed cast and narrative in comparison to its running title and wild variety of genre elements it combines. It shouldn't work as well as it does. Animation and art are very good for the era with some stunning sequences - some first pov shots look like they're animated by Koji Morimoto - and towards the end we get some very memorable set designs and scenes that could've been lifted from Oshii's Angel's Egg. It's silly, full with cliches, has some cheesy 80s rock on its OST but it's incredibly entertaining nonetheless.

Entertaining, perfectly delivered piece of pulpy goodness: 7/10

Body Jack (1987)

The fourth title in Pink Shock series and perhaps the most memorable OVA of this huge bunch (as well as most "fanservicey", turning into borderline-hentai before long. Development that caught me by surprise to say the least). Should get award for having the MOST MISLEADING OPENING SCENE EVER which features local Dr. Frankenstein working on his doomsday invention.

Oh well, Body Jack deserves recognition as propably only piece of fiction ever made that realistically portrays what guy would do if he found himself possessing (literally) an attractive female body. It's even better if the body is the one belonging to your great crush! So far, so... good?

Borderline-rape lesbian sex with her best friend and your own childhood friend (who has had crush on you for god knows how many years)? Oh well, that happens every now and then.

Schlicking on "your" bed afterwards, being busted by onii-chan~ and his ragtag bunch of rapists and then experiencing gangbang (and enjoying it too in oh-god-why-does-this-feel-so-good~ way)?

Now that doesn't happen every day.

4/10

California Crisis: Gun Salvo (1986)

America of MTV era. Everything is in high contrast, shadowy and edgy. People drink Coke and run from KGB and US military because aliens and X-Files and shit. Doing fully developed high school girl is hardcore lolicon. Deserves mention for bizarre art/animation style and nonsensical writing that doesn't even attempt at developing the characters or resolving the narrative in coherent fashion. 80s man, that was the time.

5/10

Dragon's Heaven (1988)

My fascination with OVA boom stuff could be explained pretty well by this quote: "In the 1980s, when home video was new and Japan was rushing to fill the market with hastily-made OAVs, there were a lot of projects made that, in saner times, nobody would have ever considered making."

Pretty much every title on the list so far has been insane in one way or another, chockful with offkilter creativity (not always in good sense) that is hard to come by these days. Many works might've been amateurish and badly animated schlock (Roots Search...brrrrr) but you certainly could not blame anime industry for lacking creativity.

Dragon's Heaven starts out with exhibition of niche-targeting ballsyness that was something GAINAX might've done. It's 5 minute long opening sequence is done entirely with miniature models and shot on film. Quality of said sequence can be debated but at the very least it's interesting (during ED credits & post-ED footage we see the stereotypical 80s otaku creators of anime work on the models etc. which was admittedly nice peak into alien geek culture). The anime itself is fine, post-apocalyptic Girl And Her Robot story set in endless desert where intelligent robots dish it out. It's animated in quite unique, interesting style by studio Artmic (Bubblegum Crisis) with thick, sketchy and "grainy" feel unlike anything else I've watched. Intricate and clunky-looking mechanical designs are also worth noting. (for proper review see this)

It's nothing special overall but quite nice piece of work and a fantastic example of the creativity that permeated the 80s "Golden Age"

6/10

Cosmos Pink Shock (1986)

Parody OVA from mid80s featuring a teen girl racing through galaxy in titular space ship while pissing everybody off. Had fun Macross parody in the very beginning that amused me as well as one funny "fan club" joke towards the end but meh.

5/10

The Choujo (1986)

Pretty boring Rumic World entry with some great animation and smexy villain but meh. Nothing else noteworthy about it.

5/10

Gunsmith Cats (1995-1996)

Now this isn't obscure at all! Awesome, classic 90s Girls n' Guns anime with the best OP of its style if Cowboy Bebop had never been made. Well animated action goodness with tasteful fanservice and likeable cast.

7/10

Riding Bean (1989)

Early Kenichi Sonoda work and actually the "origin" of Gunsmith Cats. It was planned as series but only one episode was ever released. Nevertheless, it takes place in the same world Gunsmith Cats does and this OVA "famosly" boasts the presence of blonde, whitey Wincent. ;) It's pretty nice action piece dealing with kidnapping of millionaire and his daughter. Titular Bean Bandit (WORST NAME EVER  ) and his assistant Wincent are couriers for hire popular with underworld who get tangled in rather complicated kidnapping case.

It's nice, simpleminded action flick with some memorable moments

6/10

Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman (1994)
and Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman R: Ai no Kanashimi no Final Battle (1994)

Go Nagai.

Nuff said, I think... but the setup is so ludicruous synopsis is worth quoting:

Mari's dream is to grow up to be a famous missionary like Mother Teresa, so she is attending the famous Perfect Religion private school, where the future leaders of the world's religions are trained. Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Muslims; everyone mingles together peacefully. But a new and evil cult called the Black Buddha have been plotting to force everyone to convert to their religion, starting with the students of PR. When Mari's new roommate Sari is kidnapped by the evil cult, the Buddha appears before her, telling her she must become his most holy warrior, the Gōtaman, in order to save her.

The Buddha neglects to mention that His Most Holy Warrior must wear a skimpy sumo cloth, an ugly sports bra and some eighties-tastic shades to hide her identity, or that the Gōtaman must defeat her enemies by using her ultimate attack, THE BUTT ATTACK.

It does exactly what it sounds like.

Can Mari defeat the evil minions of the Black Buddha cult, or will she die of embarrassment first?

this is one of the most retarded anime I've ever seen that is well aware of how stupid it is. As far as steaming piles of shit go it tastes sugary and causes laughing fits unlike any other steaming pile of shit I've eaten. Awesome campy fun and worth seeing, definetly

But alas it's still steaming pile of shit

4/10

Sky Girls OVA (2006)

Some sort of loli battle machine

5/10

Fantasia (1993)

How does I clone a Lum? Cliched shit.

4/10

Hand Maid Mai (2003)

Fuck me for not reading decriptions properly. This was exactly what I deserved for that.

Hideo Ozu is an editor in a shady adult video company. For years, he has dreamed of being a motion picture director while his childhood friend Mai Kurosawa has become an upcoming actress. Then one day, his dreams are shattered when Mai takes all of his amateur videos of her and tells him to get out of her life.

FUCK YES! Indie film making and shit! Ozu! Kurosawa! This anime is totally made for me wheeeeeeeeeeeee

And first half was good (apart from some shitty character designs) with some good humour and narrative that avoided typical anime cliches. As I said, fuck me for not reading whole description.

On his way home after a few drinks, Hideo bumps into Cyberdoll Sara, who makes him mark an invoice. When he arrives at his pad, Hideo is greeted by three Cyberdolls - Mai, Ai and Mie. All three of them happen to look like different age variations of Mai Kurosawa. And when Kurosawa announces the release of a biography video of her using Hideo's old footage, Hideo decides to start his directing dreams over again using his three Cyberdolls.

THE FUCK IS THIS CLICHE STORM BULLSHIT RUINING MY ANIMU FOR FUCK'S SAKE I MAD

it turns into fucking shitfest on second half with shitty maid fanservice and crap. FUCK YOU for ruining good premise.

Oh, and story ends in a wall. This was 3 ep OVA and all eps WERE animated...but then company went bankcrupt and the last two eps remain unrealeased to this day. Not that I'd want to see them.

3/10

Kakurenbo (2004)

Propably best full-CGI anime I've seen. Kids play brutal hide and seek in threatening, abandonded town at night with onis. Suspenful, thrilling and well directed and in the end rather haunting short.

7/10

Kobu-tori (1929)

Yeah, just TRY and be more hipster than I. I dare you I double dare you, you won't have a chance when I keep pulling shit like this out of my sleeve. 1929 (mute, of course) short animation about woodcutter encountering feast of mythical beasts, and what follows... Truly fascinating from historical perspective.

6/10

Onboro Film (1985)

One of the experimental shorts Tezuka directed in 80s. I have little to add to the synopsis:

A scene from an American animated piece called "Dudley Do Right" shows a scene in which a queen is tied to a railroad track with ropes and shouting, "Help!" This image was often used in serial action films of the silent comedy period. In this short film, a western-style hero fights a villain and saves a beautiful woman in the same situation. This classical scene, however, is marred, blurred and smudged because the film itself is very old. Not only does the hero have to fight the villain, but he also has to struggle hard against the bad condition of the film.

Very good and quirky experimental short in spirit of classic american animation. :)

7/10

Sweat Punch (2002-2006)

Five Studio 4°C shorts collected on one DVD. These films were something of a disappointment to me due to studio's reputation and magnificence of collections like Genius Party. The last one, Junk Town, is charming little tale about young boy and a robot who grows by eating other robots larger and larger (think: FLCL) but apart from that they're nothing special. First one, Professor Dan Petory's Blues, is unfunny "educational" piece about why UFOs don't move straight. End of the World had nice animation style but that's all it had going for it. Kigeki was highly praised and as such biggest disappointment. It was nice, moody story set in old Ireland with gorgeous art but again, nothing special. Higan (Enlightement) was similar disappointment.

I give it one extra point for being experimental and Junk Town so:

6/10

Raven Tengu Kabuto: The Golden-Eyed Beast (1992)

LMFAO. Crappy and hilariously corny action OVA (that is completely unaware of its own stupidness, meaning it would fail metacognitive tests of any kind. Hard.) from early 90s with laughable writing, characters and barely ok art and animation. Enjoyable as camp. (for further details consult this)

4/10

Bobby's in Deep (1985)

Now I can be very forgiving with and enjoy pulpy, trashy OVA goodness.

But I give absolutely no mercy when show tries to be artsy and DEEP and fails miserably.

Bobby's in Deep is such show.

I don't even know where to begin. Our protagonist (the titular "Bobby" and no it isn't his real name of course because he is Japanese) is pants-on-head retarded autistic faggot who doesn't give a shit about anything but his motorbike. When lovestruck, lonely girl starts to send you letters how will you reply?

"My bike is BLUE"

That's fucking how. Jesuschristthisfuckingguyihateyousomuch

Absolutely everything about this OVA/film is retarded. It goes for artistic visuals and editing...and comes off with pretty much every single scene rendered to borderline incomprehensible mess of visual storytelling due to shitfaced editing lining up crappy shot after shot after shot (one more blurry closeup of some bike part and I go nuts). Nearly all the material is dark and murky as if shot through bad lenses. There's disconnection between contents of scene and representation (and not in meaningful way). In very beginning we see Bobby's little sister prancing around all giddy and stuff...yet she sounds like she is whispering while delivering all the happy lines. The fuck!?!?!? Scenes also often feel strangely "long"...it's hard to explain but it's as if there was "lag" between some cuts. Say, character X says Z and then it takes 2 extra seconds to get reply/cut change etc. it's weird and feels like shit in any case. All sounds are bad too. Only formal merit Bobby has is the animation that is technically good for the most part (and one sequence I come back to later).

Then there are the godawfully shitty montages that randomly burst in every now and then. Reason for these is simple: this film featured then new and hot idol Hironobu Nomura in in main role and OF COURSE they had to plug his songs in the film somehow. Hence crappy, artsyfartsy montages that contribute nothing and are merely annoying.

The tension between project's artsyness and blatant commercialism overall is also rather funny and one of its defining features. It's weird to have such "artsy" film to start exploiting then-popular rebel kid imagery & plot line by the halfway mark and oh so blatantly.

But narrative is the worst of all: an incoherent mess that goes absolutely nowhere with no drive or sense of pacing. Just like everything else about the OVA it's murky, sad excuse of storytelling. Bobby is also one of the most alienating protagonists I've ever seen.

It has one good thing though: the final sequence where Bobby races through the streets. It's insanely impressive at times, entirely animated by legendary Koji Morimoto from first peron point of view. That sequence is absolutely magnificent and I wish it would've been used in better film.

Bobby's in Deep is pretentious pile of shit that makes me angry. Because I don't want to think about it anymore I spare myself from further ranting and give link to similarlyminded review

Strange Love (1997)

if you want to do ecchi fanservice series make sure that

a) your females don't have faces that look like they belong to creepy space aliens
b) their bodies don't have proportions so fucked up even Mogudan would weep
c) art and animation are not godawfully fugly.

3/10

Mezame no Hakobune (2005)

Incredibly boring Oshii piece. Basically it's a mindtrip through worlds of water and air (lots of fishies and birds) in kinda-sorta depiction of human evolution kickstarted by dogheaded aliens in beginning of time or something. Now I would've propably loved this if it was done in traditional animation but little bit above average CGI long shots for over half an hour in barely distinct locales gets old really fast. The ending would've been cool with morphing human-animal-human faces (fuck yeah genetics shit bla bla technobabble through visuals) IF THEY HADN'T BEEN FUCKING DOGS

I SWEAR OSHII EVEN I'VE GOT SICK OF THAT DIRTY RUNT

Kawai's awesome music saves the whole thing and keeps it engaging for most of the time. If it wasn't for Kawai I'd take two points away from final score

6/10

Puni Puni Poemy (2001)

Borderline 10/10 OVA and one of the funniest anime I've ever seen. Watch it. Now. :hitthetable:

9/10

Gosenzozama Banbanzai! (1989-1990)

Hands down the best OVA in this whole bunch and closest to 10/10 rating (I might up it to that one day, who knows). Mamoru Oshii makes love with avantgarde absurdist theater while Satoru Utsunomiya delivers some of the best and most creative character animation in history of anime. Absolutely masterful work. Only reason this isn't 10 already is because I have to see and think about it more before I feel secure to give it that rating.

Hilarious, extremely metafictional and deep family comedy about average Japanese family that is caught in the whirlwind of chaos as strange girl who claims to be family son's granddaughter from future comes to live with them. First ep left me baffled and rolling my eyes but by the time I finished the show Oshii's genius couldn't be denied.

9/10

Idol Fight Suchie-Pai 2 (1996)

Retarded plotless crap. It's like K-ON but bad and and shitty and from 90s and has furries in it.

4/10

Rayca (2002)

Strange CGI short from 2002. Floating piano chords and Haruhiko Mikimoto's character design. That's all I can remember. Meh. The premise was interesting though: "Rayca is a girl of the 31st Century where individuals exist only as computer data. She comes to the 21st century to learn about our sub-culture."

5/10

Kore ga UFO da! Soratobu Enban (1975)

One of the most unintentionally hilarious "documentaries" I've ever seen. As name would suggest it's 70s animated, short documentary about UFOs. What makes it killer camp stuff is the way how it combines in itself legitimate descriptions of alleged UFO cases...with absolutely arsepulled schematics of UFOs engines etc.

And it has the gall to keep the "we're just counting facts yo" tone. Wonderful.

4/10

Jumping (1984)

Another experimental Tezuka short from 80s. Directed by Tezuka and animated by one guy it's premise is simple. We see from first perspective someone jumping up and down ever forward with each leap higher and longer than the previous. By the end we're jumping from continent to continent.

Despite the simple artwork it's visual extragavanza and totally awesome. Given you can watch the whole thing in 6 mins there's no reason for not checking this one out.

7/10

Lupin III: Pilot Film (1969)

Pilot film for Lupin III tv series and as such very fascinating one. Mainly it's just character introductions + one simple plot of Lupin and his gang escaping yet again from clutches of police. Part that introduced Fujiko Mine was "wow" - extremely radical anf fast cutting and combination of live action & animated imagery that is decades ahead it's time. Fascinating stuff.

6/10

Violence Jack (1986)

Gore + rape = Violence Jack

4/10

Kimera (1996)

sum Utsunomiya sakuga + Homolust + terrible, terrible writing + homolust + terrible, terrible writing + homolust disguised as heterosexuality via subs + terrible, terrible writing = Kimera

4/10

Tobira wo Akete! (1995)

Studio 4°C short directed by Koji Morimoto, dealing with little girl's trip to fantasy land of imagination. Pretty cool.

6/10

Sin in the Rain (2006)

Nice start for detective story that was never finished and ends in cliffhanger. Oh well, it was ok with nice, realistic animation & character style.

5/10

Glassy Ocean (1998)

Artsyfartsy experimental piece from late90s. No real story in here but interesting, experimental visuals. Nice experience, albeit it is a bit too long in my opinion and starts to drag in parts. Some 3D meshes pretty badly but for most part it's great for the era.

6/10

Good Morning Althea (1987)

Really delightful scifi action piece from 80s. It's nothing terribly complicated but simpy well told story about one woman and two guys who are only survivors in skirmish between human/Crest joint forces (Woman is a Crest, who conquered Earth some time ago which obviously causes frictions between species) and battleship controlled by malicious AI. Obvious Macross influence was obvious.

I really enjoyed this one. It's well animated and nice to look at and story's not halfbad either for 80s scifi action OVA.

6/10

Capricorn (1991)

FANTASY CLICHES FANTASY CLICHES EVERYWHERE

FURRIES FURRIES EVERYWHERE

4/10

Black Magic M-66 (1987)

"Freelance video journalist Sybil bites off more than she can chew when she tangles with a top secret military combat robot programmed to kill the grand-daughter of its creator."

That's the premise and the result is damn good action OVA based loosely on manga by Masamu Shirow. Somewhat reminds me of mix between Aliens and Terminator films. Excellently animated, well paced and told story. Action is great and characters good for what they are. I really loved this one. Alongside with Gunsmith Cats perhaps by number one rec. as far as action goes.

7/10

The Laughing Target (1987)

another Rumick World adaptation, this time horror. It was pretty good but it betrayed in various ways that manga was propably better. There are always problems with pacing when one stretches 30 pages or so story to 45mins and the art and occasionally cheesy directing can't really rival Takahashi's manga touch. Still, it was enjoyable and slightly creepy piece, though not very scary one.

6/10

Outlanders (1986)

I'm so sorry Phantasia for calling your lead girl Lum clone. THIS is what a fucking Lum clone means, jesus christ. When this is not stealing from Urusei Yatsura it's stealing from other places. And everything is boring. Not even fanservice scenes spread here and there help.

5/10

Detatoko Princess (1997)

Stupid but very funny fantasy parody OVA directed by Shinbo, making this oldest of his works I've seen. It's quite funny and has nice prototype elements of Shinbo's upcoming style. Yuki Miyamura is awesome in the role of our dizzy princess heroine. :)

Nothing special but pretty cool

7/10

Mirai Nikki (2010)

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH OH WOW

Disappointment of the year. :hahaha:

I was expecting genuine adaptation of the manga but what I got was 8min long, overblown trailer for the manga. Fuck you too, Japan

5/10

The Cockit (1992-1993)

Fuck yeah Matsumoto! Three stories set during WWII, based loosely on Leiji Matsumoto's manga. First one was directed by Kawajiri and featured Harlock-lookalike as its main character, story about alt. timeline where Germany has managed to built atom bomb. The pilot - our main hero - is caught in moral dilemma between being loyal to his fatherland and doing the right thing and allowing the plane (he is protecting the bomber) be shot down. The fact his lover and his father, scientists behind the bomb, are aboard doesn't make the dilemma any easier. Second story is about Japanese kamikaze pilots during last day's of war and third is about two soldiers in Pacific theatre trying to fullfil a promise they know is propably futile.

Great stories them all, overriding with passion and occasionally reality breaking artistic touches (esp. in end of second) that are justified. Excellently animated by MADHOUSE they all bring up futility of war well in their own ways. I especially loved the second ep about kamikaze pilot.

8/10

Black★Rock Shooter (2010)

Really, really pretty with gorgeous battle animation. Art direction for alt. world clips featuring titular character and aforementioned fighting is wonderful whereas "real world" clips are nice SoL...but the narrative is really weak and doesn't properly resolve anything by the way. It's beautiful, extremely well animated, it has nice ideas but it's also vacuous and lacking in narrative department. It's very good example of things that are wrong in modern anime.

6/10

Trava: Fist Planet (2002)

Hell yeah! Takeshi Koike's OVA is all about sakuga, being badass and extremely stylized art. Shit like this keeps me going till I get to see Redline. Snappy, great dialogue, gorgeous art and animation and offkilter setting. Good anime doesn't need anything else.

7/10

Submarine 707R (2003-2004)

And the reward for most out of place loli fanservice goes to...

Jesus christ. For most part this was dreadfully boring and average but some weird elements INCLUDING RANDOM OUTBURTS OF LOLICON FANSERVICE THAT WERE COMPLETELY OUT OF PLACE AND LACKED ANY CONTACT TO ANYTHING ELSE IN THE SHOW has been one of the most ludicruos things I've seen in anime lately, even in this company.

Nothing to see here folks, unless you have hardon for subs. Oh, right! Anno directed OP sequence which is basically Anno doing softcore porn: buildan' old military vessels, buildin' old military vessels everywhar. I'm just surprised OP didn't feature Yamato there somewhere

5/10

Blue Submarine No. 6
(1998-2000)

MAEDA I AM DISAPPOINT

Now I can be very forgiving with and enjoy pulpy, trashy OVA goodness.

But I give absolutely no mercy when show tries to be artsy and DEEP and fails miserably.

Blue Submarine No. 6 is such show.

Shitty writing, shoddily developed characters and narrative and total lack of pacing or directing ruins this one. It's a damn shame as it had all the ingredients of a great show yet it completely fucked up the formula. It has the most unfitting OST I've ever heard and that alone ruins many scenes. Action scenes are haphazard messes and directed in a way it's hard to tell what exactly is going on. They're also never exciting. 3D art is pig disgusting and the way it meshes with damn well animated 2D parts leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least.

But cardinal sins stem from the narrative which especially in final episode turns into an utter mess that doesn't make any sense.

Show with great potential and all ingredients needed for making a classic that manages to shoot itself in the foot and die out of blood loss. Maeda, what the fuck were you thinking while directing this wreck?

3/10

Just finished Paprika, my mind is still blown, but it's by far one of the best movies I've seen lately.

10/10 :w00:
Asuka's not a bitch, she just denies her innocence in a bitchy way.

Ivrogne, leader of Bougainvillea/East Maiden (probably)/Class Rep. And you best be caring about her because her arc comes after this one (as far as we know). Also she's scheming and planning and shit and we don't know what she's up to.

Head is without a doubt my favorite after UTSUKUSHII SHOUNEN~ (seriously when was the last time Ishida Akira voiced a guy that wasn't homolust) but with the addition of BOXING EPISODE next week Kanako is officially rule 63 Touga so I may have to give her more attention than before.

Star Driver - God damnit this series is so motherfucking stupid
SPOILER: Show
"The man on TV is our real father"
"This was the first time I had ever heard of my real birth"

And then their mom introduced him to a young girl to set them up? Really? Because she "decided he needed Kanako more than herself"?

Also regarding the last episode - It was so so obvious they would have Takuto reciting that little spell. That's fine. What isn't fine is how awkwardly they did it: The millisecond Takuto is in a pinch, he says that spell like it was on his mind all the time and he was just waiting for it. At least TRY and make it a tiny bit dramatic.

And it's embarrassingly lame how Sugata keeps almost using his first stage and then have Wako tell him "no, don't do it!". Like, jeez, we get it. I admit this episode he finally did something, but WHY DIDN'T HE USE THIS ASS PULLED MOVE BEFORE? He didn't even need to think about it, he just did it in true shounen style - "Well, I guess I'll just have to use that" (Not that he said that, of course, the point is he just conveniently knew what to do at the right time despite not knowing how to do this just a little while ago).

And since I already mentioned being dramatic, I feel this is an issue with all the fights so far (except the one with Sugata): The fights still feel like they mean nothing, are inconsequential and it's way too obvious Takuto will win without breaking a sweat. Hell, even the Glittering Crux members acknowledge this and are just "well, fuck it, lets leave him alone till we get that third stage".
I'm sorry, but I don't get you guys on this, at all. This still gives me the vibe of a "just turn off your brain and stop thinking about all the silliness or plot holes and just enjoy yourself" series, which tend to be craptastic. It's not that the episodes are boring, they are pretty fun, but I've always had an issue with watching something that really stretches my suspension of disbelief and realism. Or in other words, make me facepalm.

That said, I can't wait for episode 12. Fuck.

A 15-year-old financial genius who can magically heal people will come in handy, you know.

Sugata always knew how to use the King's Pillar, he just didn't do it for the obvious reason that it makes you comatose. Or has a chance of doing so, anyway.

Ding ding ding

This is hardly brain-turn-off material, but if you're still analyzing the particulars of the basic plot this may not be your kind of show. Why don't they just shoot Utena :hohum:
