80s moe is out, 00s moe is in.
Personally, I don't mind it - Noriko's character design in the OVA always wigged me out given the stylization of her face compared to the realism of her genitalia.
Nothing is so valuable that it need not be started afresh, nothing is so rich that it need not be enriched constantly.

I'm not expecting much from the author who... Well, probably hasn't done much work besides porn up to this point. I can't find anything on this "Kabocha" -guy.
And just look at the art, I realize that Gunbuster is over twenty years old and that it needs to be made marketable to modern tastes, but modern tastes are evidently worse.
This statement could potentially be very controversial, depending on it's exact implications.

By pacing I mean the time that passed when Noriko and Amano were travelling in light-speed.

Don't judge a book from the cover, it could be nice.
ANN updated the news page to mention "Comic Gunbuster" published in 1989, I always wondered how good it was, I never saw it. Does anyone have it?
So let’s make a wish.
“Please let me redo again.”
No matter how many times
From the book “All About Nagisa Kaworu: A Child of Evangelion”.

I thought the pacing was fine. Like Xard said, Smith isn't someone we're supposed to get attached to anyway. He's more a fulfillment of a trope tied to Noriko, a character device (the tragic “I let you down” guilt carry the burden phase), rather than a character in his own right. Either way that's more of an issue with characterization than pacing.
Sadamoto's Evangelion adaptation could have been nice, too. Adapting Gainax originals to comic format doesn't strike me as being a very good idea, even when the work in question is twenty-some years old.
