I have to agree that most of the theories on this forum are worthless fanwankery, but they're all worth investigating.

"He is living why?"...
Couldn't it mean "Why is he living?" or "What is his reason for living?"
It seems more angsty that way, and if it refers to Gendo, then it fits. Or it could be talking about Adam's existence, and whether Adam has any of his own goals.

Reading this post just now made me laugh out loud upon comparing it to the text that we actually got.

You incurable optimist, you.

On the subject of the original embryo's caption: I read it as

whoisyou
Heis (not sure, "UVing" is as close as I can get)
why?

I think I prefer the Babylonian cuneiform, really.

Huh. You know, I don't think anyone's gone to the trouble of figuring that out. It's not cuneiform, as far as I can tell. Reminds me vaguely of the "angelic script" from the Dead Sea Scrolls...good luck finding a translation for it.

Nobody's even determined if it's an actual alphabet yet.

Quoted from here since NAveryW doesn't want to discuss in that thread (and apparently no one decided to merge it yet):
View Original PostNAveryW wrote:Since the text doesn't even look like it contains the word "crying", to me this demonstrates how bizarrely effective the power of suggestion can be. There's that whole other thread for discussing what the text is, so I won't discuss that here.

Well, the first character could be a "c" and the second one a "r" (a little bigger than normal?), there aren't "y" but it could be a case of Engrish; actually the "r" is really too big for a lower case coursive text, but I don't see a "l" anywhere in that word.
Surely a BD release could help.
So let’s make a wish.

I doubt a BD release would help. The high-res photograph of the actual cel released on one of the collector's discs is indecipherable.

Yeah, my bad; I didn't think about checking that picture, it doesn't look much better; actually it's not weird, probably they didn't care about those details in the before HD era (yet why did they care to put them in the first place? Is it because they wanted to see our futile efforts?).

That's what I got, too. :ehh:

Maybe "UVing" is supposed to be "Dying" or something? I dunno.
