It's the Evangelion Project, also known as "Project E", where they clone Adam and make and maintain Evangelions.

Episode 21 wrote:AKAGI:

An Eva?!

IKARI:
This is the Adam Revival Project, generally known as Project E,
and this is our mockup, Eva Unit 00.

The Adam Project and Project E are not the same thing. Project E is also known as the Adam Revival Project. It's a similar name, so confusion is understandable, but according to the Classified Information, it's a different project:

Details of the Human Instrumentality Project, Generally Recognized Information wrote:Nerv's three big projects are Project E, the Adam Project, and the Human Instrumentality Project.

So what is the Adam Project? I have no idea and I haven't been able to find anything. I get the feeling it was sort of forgotten when the White Giant was retconned into Lilith.

At a guess I'd say it was harnessing Adam's power for human use, the first attempt at which caused 2I.

That's doubtful. I really do think the retcon screwed it up, considering it's brought up right before Unit 00 takes the Lance of Longinus down to Terminal Dogma:

Episode 14 wrote:Fuyutsuki: What is the status of the Adam Project?

Gendo: Proceeding smoothly. It's not even two percent behind schedule.

Fuyutsuki: Then, the Lance of Longinus is...

Gendo: It's going as planned. Rei is carrying out the operation.

Now that you bring it up, I'm confused about that bit. Am I to believe that previously to Rei carrying the Lance down, Lilith was nailed to the cross in Terminal Dogma by her arms but otherwise unrestrained?
...or was she supposedly really meant to be entirely up until the end (ep24), when she was retconned into Lilith?
No wonder even Kaworu got outsmarted. What are we mere mortals to do against the directors of our lives that switch Angels when we're not looking?

There was no need to restrain Lilith, as her soul was elsewhere. The Lance was stuck into her for the purpose of stopping her growth.

Classified Information wrote:For the purpose of opening the Path to God, Gendo and Seele brought Lilith's growth to a point just before the final stage, and to temporarily delay this they are having Nerv transport the Spear of Longinus that was paired with Adam.

In which case...the Adam project is about keeping embryonic Adam safe with the intent of a union with Lilith, as opposed to the HIP which is bringing about 3I...as a result of the Adam/Lilith union.
Thin distinction is thin.

Gendo's scenario for Third Impact was always different from Seele's. Gendo intended to use Adam, whereas Seele intended to use... well, apparently not Kaworu, judging from their dialogue once Kaworu took control of Unit 02...

Adam Project= Keeping Adam safe and or eventual grafting her into Gendo's hand.

Project E= Stuff involving the Eva units.

Human Instrumentality Project= Duh. >_>

NaveryW: Seele intended to use Eva-01 as a surrogate for Lilith.

I'd agree, but then what relevance does Fuyutsuki's question about the LnY bear to the Adam Project?

Take the following as you will:

Translation wrote:(Theorizing by that Japanese Eva-wikipedia fansite, nothing necessarily taken as canon.)

Regarding the release of the modifications/changes to Episode 24:

1) "Adam's revival." The sample was revealed to have been illegally diverted, Gendo's lines in
Episode 15 are irrelevant.

2) What's called "The Adam Project" became a project that was discarded/destroyed (literally in
Japanese: "a dead letter"). The Committee knows very well about the existence of "Adam's revival".

3) There were actually multiple Adam samples that were revived in the story.

4) The Adam Project was changed into the "Lilith Project".

My guess is they meant Episode 13 or 14 regarding point 1. Probably a mistake on the fan wiki's part. I like the idea of point 4, personally.

Perhaps they were going to revive Adam but decided to just graft her into Gendo's hand and focused on Lilith in the meantime.

Regarding point 3, it's possible there were multiple copies of Adam laying around and Kaji smuggled the "original" embryo, but I find it hard to believe such an important point wouldn't have been implied in Misato's findings in EoE. The term Adam embryo COULD have been pluralized, yet BB's translation or the Renewal A2000A fansub translation made no indication that it was.

It WOULD help make sense of the 24' plot-hole at least, considering in that case, Kaworu would have reason to believe the original Adam is with Gendo while a copy is in Terminal Dogma.

Perhaps things are a combination of theories/points 3 and 4 then.

Original Japanese of the theories is here by the way:

従ってこの設定変更が明らかになる第弐拾四話の公開以降においては、

1. 「再生されたアダム」を素直に横流しされたサンプルのことと解し、第拾伍話のゲンドウの台詞を死文化させる。

2. 「アダム計画」という計画そのものを空文化させ、委員会が熟知するところの「再生されたアダム」は存在しないとする。

3. 実は再生されたアダムのサンプルは物語に登場したものの他に複数存在する。

4. アダム計画を「リリス計画」と呼び変える。

I think that the Lance may have been put there to stop her Anti-AT field from spreading, if any of the angels/adam had reached her. This may be why Seele was so angry when Gendo used it, as their only failsafe was gone

Lilith can't generate an Anti-AT Field if her soul isn't in her body.

Yes, but I think that Seele might have put it there as a precaution. They might not have known it all

The CI outright says why Lilith was impaled. Speculation is unnecessary.

Sorry to bump this up...

The Adam Project (i.e. NOT the Adam Revival project) is mentioned only once in the series if my anal Ctrl+F of the Platinum trascripts doesn't fail me. It's in Ep 14.

FUYUTSUKI: What is the status of the Adam Project?

IKARI: Proceeding smoothly. It's not even two percent behind schedule.

FUYUTSUKI: Then, the Lance of Longinus is...

IKARI: It's going as planned. Rei is carrying out the operation.

Is it safe to assume that the project is about smuggling the Adam sample through Kaji and eventually implanting it in Gendo and that therefore the Project is strictly a Gendo/Fuyu thing, clearly a "malfeasance toward Seele" and that Seele won't find out until later on?

Sounds about right to me, unless there's something particular in NGE I'm forgetting.
