No one has Death and Rebirth (True)^2 and End of Eva (or at least, no one has announced it after Manga Ent. let their license expire)

FUNimation Entertainment has Evangelion 1.0, 1.01. and 1.11 ONLY.

Crap. As soon as I saw this thread I was thinking EoE was finally gonna be cleaned up and shipped out next. Guess I'll continue to wait.

Not exactly twice, but close enough. At the pretty standard 40Mbit/s bitrate an episode lands between 6-7GB. Altough Japan still has thier usual practices of not always filling up the discs so you sometimes end up with a 20ish GB single layer BD25 disc with 3 eps.

But a more hopeful example would be the recent release of Martian Successor Nadesico which fits all 26 eps on just 4 nearly filled to the top dual layer BD50 discs.

View Original Postbackseatjesus wrote:I'm referring to the fact that Dragonaball Kai WAS cropped for HD. They cropped the picture and added more to the sides.

It was only cropped for broadcast, nothing was added on the sides. The Japanese BD release is in the original aspect ratio of 4:3, which is probably what Funi is getting.

Original series footage, slightly overfiltered 16mm film:

While EvaMonkey gave a lovely technical explanation of why people shouldn't get their hopes up, it's not quite right to try and crush whatever hope people have left.

First off there will always be an advantage because DVD was always a terrible medium with MPEG-2 destroying everything. With BD you have a resolution that actually reflects the abilities of film and proper encoding. There is always plenty to gain from proper digital mastering and TEN EIGHTY PEEEEEEE.

Examples available so far are quite promising:

Gunbuster, 1988-1989 (first 4 eps were shot on 16mm, 5-6 on delicious 35mm film. both samples from the 16mm film parts)

Personally I can't wait until Eva TV, Death and EoE hit BD. It's been forever since I've seen Renewal DVDs so I don't remember how good they look. I just hope that if they use the Renewal masters, they didn't store them on shitty HDCAM tapes but instead somewhere proper. This happened to Castle of Cagliostro and the BD ended up looking only a fraction as awesome as it possibly could have been.

Well, I've watched the platinum DVDs and the renewal EOE and they're about as good as a DVD transfer can get. Anno has a real love of film (in fact didn't he even use a film intermediate for the 1.11 transfer?) so we can hope that 16mm prints for all of Renewal exist somewhere. And of course a 32mm print of EOE is guaranteed to exist.

Anyway thanks for giving examples of how blu-ray can improve the look of these old TV shows. It isn't a great improvement, but it's nothing to sneer at, either. And with a 32mm source, EOE should turn out as nice as Wings of Honneamise, which had a truly awesome blu-ray transfer.

Episode 16 is missing. The renewal version is mastered from a 35mm internegative.

I agree about the advantage of Blu-ray. Samurai 7 on Blu-ray had 9 episodes (8 on the last disc) on each disc, and the quality doesn't look bad at all.

And yes, I'm aware about Dragon Ball Kai when it was shown in HD.

Right. Let's get back to the topic, shall we?

I hope that Funimation gets a hold of the series, DC's, Death and EoE and releases a giant box set on bluray that is worthy of Shinji himself masturbating over. At least then he will have a good excuse to do it. Not a comatose red head girl (shame on you Shinji)
Why in God's name would I wanna keep writing about characters whose central preoccupation are weed and dick and fart jokes? I mean, ya gotta grow man. Don't you ever want anything more for yourself? I know this poor hapless son of a bitch does. I look into his sorry doe eyes and I just, I see a man crying out. He's crying out, "When Lord? When the fuck can your servant ditch this foul-mouthed little chucklehead to whom I am a constant victim of his folly, so much so that it prevents him from ever getting to kiss a girl! Fuck! When, Lord when? WHENS GONNA BE MY TIME?

I don't get why people want FUNimation to get the license for Eva TV from Section23 Films. I felt the Platinum release was awesome, so I'd love to see a similar treatment for the old movies, released by them.

It's highly unlikely that FUNimation would do a new dub. FUNimation also has gotten into the habit of replacing Japanese title cards with ones translated into English (like was done with xxxHOLiC), so they'd possibly do that. FUNimation also doesn't go above 5mps in how they encode DVDs, so the image quality of the DVDs would be inferior. The ONLY advantage that I can think of is that they release more Blu-rays than other anime companies.
Then again, as David Williams said, Eva prints money. In all likelihood, Section23 will release the TV series on Blu-ray as soon as GAINAX/khara/whoever really makes the decision will let them. Keep in mind, it's not gonna come out on Blu-ray in the US before it does in Japan.

Ah yes, doing that for an anime boxset is far more respectable.

Because it would be infinitely cheaper and more available than it is now.

And no, they don't re-encode rescues.

Yeah, but this wouldn't be a rescue, this would be a new license. They'd remove the commentaries most likely, as well as various other crap special features that are ADV centric. They'd probably also make new menus.

This won't be like the Geneon rescues that had the DVDs already designed, they'd build brand new ones as if they include the old movies this wouldn't be Platinum, this would be Renewal.

So yeah, brand new encodes would happen. The Blu-ray would look nice, but the DVDs would not be as good as the ADV release.

I'd rather get a full Renewal boxset release, both on Blu-ray and DVD, from Section23.

Even the Evangelion ADV DVDs had only english translated credits, so Funimation is not the only one. (The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box has the Japanese Credits left alone, though) Also, I have seen Funimation DVDs going higher than 5 mbps (could go up to 9.5 if it wants to)

Plus, it's unlikely that Section23 would release anime on Blu-ray (in fact, one title I heard is going to be: not sure what it is),

Not what I meant. I meant episode titles. Aside from the OP and the ED, the picture of the actual episodes on the Platinum DVDs is untouched.
For example, episode 2 of Eva, in the platinum release, when it shows the first title, it has (in Japanese, of course) "Mishiranu, Tenjou", and has the translation "Unfamiliar Ceiling" in the subtitle track. FUNimation would likely replace that with a title card that is in English, like the original ADV releases did.

It's a moot point though, because I don't see Section23 Films ever giving up Eva TV. And if they can get the old movies, I doubt they'll let go of those too if they can avoid it. GAINAX/khara/whoever will have to pry it out of their cold, dead catalog.

Rebuild, on the other hand, I want to completely go to FUNimation. Why? Because they got 1.0/1.01/1.11.

I honestly believe Section23 will eventually release a Blu-ray of at least Eva TV, but they will have to negotiate a new contract for that, and there's no way in hell they'll be allowed to release it before it get's released in Japan.

And I doubt it's going to be released in Japan until around the end of the Rebuild movies.

I can see the blu-ray release of Eva will require a lot of remastering, but it is a simple process (digitally scanned at a high resolution, edited and color graded, and then printed out onto 35mm film via a laser film recorder.)

Of course, they could go back to the original negatives of the series, and re print a 35mm stock from them.

The Hurt Locker was shot on 16 mm. All of Kubricks movies were shot on 16 mm. Star Trek TOS was shot on Super-8

The picture just looks softer in HD so a HD Eva release is entirely plausible and beneficial, they just have to work hard at it so they don't muck it up. (It wont look as good as Rebuild, but dang, it'll be the best it can look)

(Even watching the Platinum Collection upscaled is a vast improvement over SD).

There is absolutely zero need to print any new film. Only thing needed are digital masters. Printing off new film is useless as noone will ever actually watch it. Printing film only to scan it again is plain and simply stupid as it's an unnecessary inbetween step that will do nothing to improve actual qualtiy.

View Original Postscarmullet wrote:(Even watching the Platinum Collection upscaled is a vast improvement over SD).

upscaling adds nothing at all over SD. SD source will always result in inferior picture quality no matter what you try to do to it. filtering always reduces quality, not improves it. starting from crappy source = crappy final product.

FYI. Kubrick liked to present some of his movies in the film's negative ratio - The Shining & Eyes Wide Shut in particular- but he shot most of his work on 35mm. Not 16.

I also question that a new transfer would be made, due to how much work was put into the Renewal transfer. I do question however, exactly how much was mastered in HD. Here's what the booklets say.

Platinum booklet with vol 4 wrote:What methods to use to remaster the footage for this DVD release? Approximately six months were spent reaching a decision in answer to this question. For the telecine process of transferring the Evangelion TV series from the original negatives, which were produced in 16mm film, a method called wet gate telecine was chosen instead of dry gate telecine, which is the current mainstream method. This method was chosen, because the priority was placed on efficiently removing scratches on the film, minimizing the shaking of the image when the 16mm film is run through telecine, and on the overall improvement in quality rather than improving the sharpness of details. Pin registration was used to reduce the shaking of the image, which occurs due to this being a film product. By firmly stabilizing the film, the shaking was visibly reduced for all to see. On the other hand, the TV opening and ending are on 35mm film, which are clear and of high resolution, unlike the TV episodes. Thus, the priority was to bring out the colors, and the dry gate telecine method was used. Furthermore, the recording was done in HD (high definition).

Huh. Based on the location of where they mention HD, I think maybe only the OP and ED were mastered in it.

I rage at the fact that the term "HD" is vaguely defined. Considering when renewal was done, HD probably meant that they mastered at 1024x768. That's a far cry from modern 32mm film digitization, which is typically 2048x1080 or 4096x2160.

In any case, if they put out blu-rays, I sure hope they go to the trouble to make a new digital master.

Blame the improper regulation of HD and ATSC standards (do we really need technically 27 forms of HD?)

And as a graduate of a Film/Video major, I rage at you keep calling 35mm 32mm. I can understand how someone familiar with computers can get confused, because 32mm does seem to be the logical progression from 16mm, but it's 35mm. I don't mean this as a personal attack, so please don't take it as such. You should see the way I get into 4 hour arguments with my best friend when he calls a DVD a CD.
