I remember us talking about that, but I forgot; is there actually a translated version of it available in the West? I think I remember you pointing to there being a version online but you know how I am about buying stuff like that when I can.
Not in any form you pay for. You can find scanlations online easily enough, though.

I don't know if I really agree with this, because life has its own natural narratives anyway and any slice of life drama will almost always have characters dealing with some central conflict. I think what separates slice-of-life though is that the conflicts/situations are dealt with extremely naturally without any of the typical enhancements used to make things more dramatic in fiction.
 sort of, but not really. The kind of tr00 "slice of life" being referred to here deemphasizes overarching structures and patterns to the point that they're largely unnecessary. Each chapter/episode/what-have-you is focused on one event that exists in its own little relative vacuum, and is only tied into the context of the broader work by the setting, characters, (usually) atmosphere, and maybe in passing references before or after. Most of the time there's very little conflict--if ANY--even involved.

True dat. They're practically two sides of the same coin, really... when you think about it... for a really long time... on LSD.

Which is the best translation?

Give me some examples so we can get an idea of what we're both thinking of when we refer to as "slice of life". Because, for instance, if I look on Wikipedia they list Forrest Gump as a "slice of life" film and I just can't buy that.

That’s one of the problems with a genre so all-encompassing (not unlike post-rock in music)—best example I could probably give would be the Aria series which I haven’t seen all of myself, or the YKK manga Xard & others have mentioned previously. It’s atmospheric, patient, steady, etc with little-to-no emphasis on recognizable plot formed around conflict so much as formed around personal interactions or experiences. I’m not currently aware of any cinematic takes on this outside anime.

Yeah, it probably doesn't help that we're drawing our definitions from different sources. I think of Ozu and especially something like, say, Hou's Cafe Lumiere as being pretty darn slice of life.

Whatever it's worth I don't know single film I'd consider real "slice of life"

I'm surprised at all the love for Elfen Lied people are showing. I can't stop myself from raging for a sec each time. :(

Anyway I've only seen a couple dozen shows but I guess my favorites would be (in no particular order, except FLCL being #1)

FLCL
Berserk
Haruhi (S2 doesn't exist!)
Azumanga Daioh
Genshiken (S1)
Gunslinger girl (cant bring myself to watching S2, though)

Cowboy Bebop was also really good, but I didn't like it as much as most people.
Haibane Renmei was great, but I cant help and feel that half of the series went over my head and it could have been a lot better. Might need another viewing.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Fooly Cooly, Elfen Lied, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, Serial Experiments Lain, and a few others I haven't finished.

I had a goal to watch every single Gainax anime so I think He is My Master is next. Then Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. And so on and so fourth.

Lately, the only anime that i have encountered and left a huge impact on me, was Code Geass. Man, some epic shit there. Idk, prolly the epic trolling that took place as well, left an amusing-to-remember mark too. Sunrise sure knows how to hit the trolling strings and have fans running wild about it.
Oh. And of course. Shame on me, Lagann. Gar at its best along with other meaningful stuff too.
Not too many other to list to be honest, in the last couple years, Spice and Wolf was alright, meh, Gundam 00 was ok, till season 2 started and rainbow innovators started running around, DTB was cool first season, but got the Gundam 00 sundrome too in the second one etc. etc.
Pretty much only Geass and Lagann reached my top-5 fav anime list from the latest series ive watched.

My least of the series that I consider to be work of art among the junk and trash that most anime really is.

GitS (all movies and two seasons of SAC)
Ergo Proxy
Serial Experiments Lain
FMA:Brotherhood
Welcome to the NHK
Planetes (that is actually a title, not my spelling mistake)
5 Centimeters Per Second

I found a lot of other titles interesting and entertaining, but the upper 7 will always have a special place in my heart.
