Because it implies that they're skipping the #.0# release and going straight to the #.## release (1.0 on DVD had 1.01 and 1.11).

Probably also because sometime in the future they'll make us shell out a couple of dozen bucks for the special golden ultra special release with 2.0, 2.1 and whatever else they can come up with. Milking the cash cow!

Because they started the process with 1.0 (1.0 being the theatrical version, they want to distinguish which version with the DVD/Blu-Ray releases)?
There are changes between the theatrical versus DVD versions anyway, so it's a nice way to keep track of what's what.

Only if they plan on releasing a 2.0 version. theatrical movie version

Lord of the Rings took just about as long to be released on DVD if I recall correctly...theatre release in December and DVD release in August.
