Pssh. If you're going to apply a 1994 anime to the lyrics, I'm going to apply a 1991 book to the lyrics.

I know I'm being incredibly pedantic, but you were saying that the song was referencing the book, whereas I was saying that the song could be applied to Evangelion.

One song that I've felt could be very strongly applied to Evangelion (and not in just a silly, tangential way like "Particle Man") is Nightwish's "End of All Hope"--particularly with regard to End of Evangelion and the whole "death and rebirth" idea.

They'll need a crane....literally

Hi Y'all!!

So, to the point. I think a whole (boat)load of TMBG songs relate to NGE more than most people think (I assume this because there is a very sparse amount of TMBG/Eva AMVs :zer_sweatdrop:). However, I'm not sure if this is actually true or it's just my over-imaginative mind gone haywire ever since I got into Eva :scanners_head:.

Hoooookkaaaayyy.....I'll start off by analyzing "They'll Need A Crane" in the context of Evangelion. Note: I highly recommend you listen to this song first

Love sees love's happiness
But happiness can't see that love is sad
That love is sad

Okay, so this verse describes Shinji and Asuka's relationship very well. They are both in love with each other, but neither state their true feelings and thus their love is in a sad state (especially with Shinji's lack of self-confidence and Asuka's verbal and physical abuse).

Sorry, another interjection :sweatdrop: I wanna say that this song relates to quite a few of the Eva characters' relationships. I wanna use A/S as an example in this analysis simply because it was the first relationship that popped into my mind when listening to this song:tongue:

Sadness is hanging there
To show love somewhere something needs a change
They need a change

This verse depicts that if this "sad love" scenario keeps on going with our two ill-fated lovers, it will eventually collapse and SOMETHING has got to be changed

[CHORUS]
They'll need a crane
They'll need a crane
To take the house he built for her apart
To make it break It's gonna take
A metal ball hung from a chain

They'll need a crane
They'll need a crane
To pick the broken ruins up again
To mend her heart To help him start
To see a world apart from pain
[/CHORUS]

Here is the interesting part *rubs hands together somewhat evilly*. The chorus states that they will need something big to change their relationship; to break it all to the foundations and start anew. I infer that from Asuka and Shinji's unstable mental states that it would require a HIGHLY SKILLED psychologist/psychoanalyst. :ting: I believe this is shockingly true about their relationship. Ain't it!?!?

Lad's gal is all he has
Gal's gladness hangs upon the love of lad
The love of lad

This basically means that their love is interdependent. Asuka is the only person that Shinji loves (as in "romance love") and means a great deal to him, while Shinji is a major dependency factor in Asuka's mental health and mood as well as all that lovey dovey stuff.

Some things gal says to lad
Aren't meant as bad but cause a little pain
They cause him pain

Another very interesting part. It's almost as if TMBG had Eva-foresight when writing this song. Asuka verbally and physically abuses Shinji, but it is to cover up her secret desire for Shinji and give him a reminder that she isn't weak. However, Shinji takes this seriously and as a result he starts to go insane.

[CHORUS]

Don't call me at work again
No, no, the boss still hates me I'm just tired
and I don't love you anymore
And there's a restaurant we should check out
Where the other nightmare people like to go I mean nice people—baby wait, I didn't mean to say nightmare

Okay, I interpret this part as Shinji saying a little monologue to let Asuka in on his love but ultimately failing. The "Boss" is Bastard King/Gendo as you can probably see and "work" is NERV.

Lad looks at other gals
Gal thinks Jim Beam is handsomer than lad
He isn't bad

Okay, this is when A/S fall out with each other and Asuka goes off trying to flirt with Kaji and Shinji is left depressed. (okay, that was a bit dodgy/weird :P tell me what I need to correct)

Call off the wedding band
Nobody wants to hear that one again
Play that again

Ummm....I think this has something to do with them drifting even further apart and Asuka running away from home....Gah, I'm running out of steam...!!!

[CHORUS]

They'll need a crane (x9)

Whew!! :sweatdrop: :stars: That was the longest post I have ever written for EvaGeeks :leekspin:

So, uh, tell me what you think, and please don't go toooo hard on me. I'm just a 9th Grader with Too Much Spare Time :D

Is it just my over-analytical mind, or do a whole load of TMBG (They Might Be Giants) go along frighteningly well NGE; especially They'll Need Crane???

Feel free to leave your thoughts and stuff here.

In my opinion:

Nine Inch Nails and Muse fit Evangelion well. Not They Might Be Giants.

Verily I doth concur.

Downward Spiral/The Fragile are like Evangelion in music form.

And Muse has that grand epicness with most of their songs, along with all the references to the end of the world.

You just made my day by linking one of my favorite bands to Evangelion X D

And about the Muse and Evangelion thing... I would say the whole of 'Exogenesis' from the album The Resistance fits nicely.

The first part 'Overture' mentions escape and follows it up with many 'why' questions. Reminds me of Shinji's lil phyco analysis in the last couple of episodes.

Then in 'Cross Pollination' it talks about how its 'We are counting on you, Its down to you' This reminds me of what Fuyutsuki said in (I think its in the movie) about how the human race rests in Shinji's hands. Then the final bit 'Tell us. What is your final wish?', We will tell it to the world' makes me think of the power Shinji was granted during the movie.

Then finally in 'Redemption' it talks about starting again which is basically the chance humanity have been gifted at the end of Evangelion (possibly the only good thing to come out of the events of Evangelion).

Cruel Angel's Thesis. :P

Lacrimosa by Kalafina for the first time EVA-01 goes berserk.

Most songs by E.S. Posthumus for the battles against the Angels.

I Hate Everything About You, by Three Days Grace reminds me of AsukaxShinji

SPOILER: Show

Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet

Every roommate kept awake
By every sigh and scream we make
All the feelings that I get
But I still don't miss you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?

Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?

Only when I stop to think
About you, I know
Only when you stop to think
About me, do you know

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
You hate everything about me
Why do you love me?

I hate
You hate
I hate
You love me

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?

Indeed, another Muse song that always reminds of Eva is 'Apocalypse Please', specifically EOE for obvious reasons...

Very dramatic, very OTT, classic Muse.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (from the Greek Ευανγελιον, meaning "Gigantic robots piloted by mentally ill children")
Eva Facts:
-Gendo's final silenced line to Ritsuko was "I'm going to shoot you now."
-Nagisa Kaworu kills a kitten every time you masturbate.
-Kaji's first and last name was Kaji

"Knights of Cydonia" by Muse
I was listening to that song recently, and at the same time, I was thinking Evangelion. It was a good song to match.

Plus, during the Christmas season, I was also thinking about Evangelion while listening to this:
Christmas / Sarajevo 12/24 (Instrumental)
Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Wait, what about "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by the Beatles:
SPOILER: Show
This would occur in Episodes 25 and 26, both TV and EoE.
EoE segments during the lines "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
TV 25 and 26 segments during the other segments.
When you listen to the song, you'll understand what I mean.
